BRIEF
INTRODUCTION

The first topic that we will study for this week is all about the music of Cordillera, where
several ethnolinguistic groups in the mountains of the Cordillera live. Through this lesson, one
will discover how the Cordillerans express their feeling towards each other and the
environment, their history, and their supernatural beliefs through the medium of the voice
and/or musical instruments. The Cordillera is located at the highest and largest mountain range
in the Philippines. Abra, Apayao, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, and the City of
Baguio and provinces surrounding it.

Similar to Cordillera Music the music of Mindoro is used for communication with the spirits
in rituals and worships, weddings, work, courtship, festive occasions and lullabies. Marayaw
song used to communicate with spirits in rituals for healing the sick and protecting the
community. Ambahan is composed of a seven-syllable line ending in rhymes, it is often used
in parenting, in courtship and by visitor to ask for food, texts are commonly written on bamboo,
often chanted with accompanying instruments.

The number of lines found in several Ambahan ranges from three to 134. There is no
specific tone style or instrument used as accompaniment.
1. Gitgit - an instrument with 3 or 4 strings. It has a wooden body. The hair of a person is used
as strings for the bow.
2. Batiwtiw - an instrument made from a bamboo. The strings are tied at both ends. At the
center of the instrument there is fret. The strings are plucked and the sound is "tiw-tiw."
3. Kinaban - called a jaws harp which is made from a bamboo.

4. Kudlong - a zither made from a bamboo with two strings.

1. Buray-dipay
A Ensemble Instrument of MINDORO
1. Buray-Dipay- kind of a rattle made from "bean pod" together with other instruments like
kalutang (two wood sticks).

2. Kalutang Ensemble

Several pairs of wood nailed at both ends with intervals of 2,3, and 4 and produces harmony.
This ensemble is used for hiking.

3. Agung Ensemble

Made up of two gongs played by two males sitting on the floor. One plays at the rear of the
gong while the other one plays at the embossed portion of the gong. A stick with a cotton
pad at the end of the stick is used to strike the gong. Both players used the duple time.

As we all know, the music of Cordillera, Mindoro, Palawan, and the Visayas has its own
distinction. In this module, we are going to discover ways of producing sounds on a variety of
sources similar to instruments being studied based on each place being mentioned. We will
recall first the musical instruments they used.
