June is Brain Health Month

A Healthful Diet Can Reduce Risk for Dementia

There are many types of dementia, but Alzheimer’s disease is the most common. Currently,
there is no proven approach to prevent dementia, but you can reduce your risk. Although risk
factors don’t cause dementia, they can increase your chances of developing the condition.
Understanding them may help you with managing the likelihood of onset. There are many risk
factors. Some can’t be controlled but others can. Risk factors that relate to diet and nutrition
can be controlled by consuming a healthful diet.
Your diet is everything that you eat and drink. In the Caribbean, the foundation for a healthful
diet is based on using the Six Caribbean Food Groups each day to plan and create your meals
and snacks. In addition to the quality of your choices, your portion size (quantity) must also
be considered.
Therefore, mindfulness is key to a healthful diet. How mindful (conscious) are you of your
portions and your choices, habits and triggers that affect your diet?
Image #1 shows that the Food from Animals, Fats and Oils sections are smaller when
compared to the Legumes (dried peas, beans, and nuts), and Fruits and Vegetables combined.
Dementia Risk-Reducing Healthful Diet
The Mediterranean-DASH Diet Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet
(Image #2) is currently the diet planning guide that is highly recommended to reduce one’s risk
of dementia. This may sound like a foreign or special diet, but it is not. Although more research
is needed, the evidence so far shows that it is healthful, with promising results for brain health.
The MIND diet guidelines combine elements of two well-known healthy diets namely, the
Mediterranean Diet and the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet. The focus
of the MIND diet is on the following:
1) Daily use of plant-based foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes and nuts
that are in their natural state or minimally processed so that their nutrients are still intact.
2) Using healthy fats, e.g. extra virgin olive oil about 2 Tbsp. daily, avocado.
3) Using moderate portions of fish (not fried) at least once per week.
4) Using moderate portions of reduced/low fat poultry at least twice per week.
5) Using moderate amounts of dairy (mostly cheese and yogurt).
6) Using small portions of red meats a few times per month or less than four times a week. Protein-packed legumes are a good substitute.
7) Limiting ultra-processed foods with added sugars, and food from animals that are high in unhealthy saturated fats.
8) Reducing salt and sodium intake and substituting with fresh seasonings, herbs, spices as tolerated.
9) Eliminating unhealthy saturated fats and trans-fats (read labels and look for the term “partially hydrogenated”).
10) Controlling portion sizes that you plan to consume.
There are many similarities between the MIND diet guidelines and the general guide from the Caribbean Six Food Groups. For example, there
is emphasis on plant-based choices, reducing food from animals (red meats), fats and oils, and portion control.
You can apply this guide by being mindful and intentional about your choices and over time, you will find that your actions will become so
routine that you will not need to think too much about what you are doing.
You may also need to rethink how and where you spend your food dollar. Savings from red meats can be used to help with purchasing more of
the much needed and under-used fruits and vegetables. As you begin to, or continue using these guidelines, please note that the contents of this
article are provided as general information. It is not intended to replace individualized professional guidance you can receive from your
encounters with a registered dietitian.
