Jesus doesn’t want our stuff

In our Gospel today we hear the story of a man who ran up to Jesus and asked Him what he must do to

. , “ . , ,reach eternal life Jesus said You are lacking in one thing Go sell what you have and give to the poor

; , ".and you will have treasure in heaven then come follow me The man went away sad because he had

. —much We might cringe when we hear this story because it is sad this man was so close to becoming

, .an active disciple of Jesus but instead turned away We also might cringe because it could be deeply

.applicable to our lives

“Jesus states that It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to
.” “ ”enter the kingdom of God One of the metaphors for the eye of a needle was a tight passageway
. ,into Jerusalem that people had to enter to get into the city In order for their camels to pass through
, , .they had to remove whatever the camel was carrying only then could they enter
, .If we look at our own lives we can most likely think of something that we tightly carry with us Maybe it

— — .is possessions
material goods or money like Jesus references in our Gospel Or maybe it is

— , , .something less material
like status pride or control

’ — , , . .Jesus doesn t want our stuff
our job promotions our designer house or our bank account He just wants us

,So we need to be willing to strip those things from our lives in order to reach Him and others by giving of our

, . ,time talent and treasure It might seem difficult but the outcome will be more than we could have ever imagined

— . — .peace on earth in giving and treasure in heaven

The fruitfulness of our efforts to promote vocations depends

timely and provocative message from Pope Francis which

reminds us so powerfully of the message of love that is at

–the heart of the Gospel a love which reaches out to all In the Old Testament the prophets knew that they were called

‘ ’of our brothers and sisters who share our common ,to witness by their own lives to the message they proclaimed
.humanity
“I am conscious that Pope Francis wrote this encyclical ,and were prepared to face misunderstanding rejection and

only of our connectedness around the world but also of , “ ” ,them fully like a burning fire in the heart a fire that could not

As a result they were prepared to

for compassion and love and for the hope that faith in ,hand over to the Lord not only their voice but their whole

.God can bring .existence
“ ,Pope Francis reminds us of how his namesake Saint
, . ‘Francis answered this question He heard the voice of ,A fundamental element one which can be seen in every vocation
, ,God he heard the voice of the poor he heard the voice of
.the infirm and he heard the voice of nature He made of ,to the priesthood and the consecrated life is friendship with
.’them a way of life
“In Fratelli Tutti Pope Francis therefore makes a special .Christ Jesus lived in constant union with the Father and this is
,appeal in the name of justice and mercy for the orphan
, , ,the poor the stranger the migrant the refugee and all ;what made the disciples eager to have the same experience
‘ ’, ‘ ’those on the margins the peripheries of life and
. ‘ ’society He envisages an open world motivated by what from him they learned to live in communion and unceasing
‘ ’he calls social friendship and sincere hospitality towards
.others I find it particularly challenging when he mentions .dialogue with God
‘ ,that Some peripheries are close to us in the city centres “ ”,If the priest is a man of God one who belongs to God and
.or in our families ,helps others to know and love him he cannot fail to cultivate a
,deep intimacy with God abiding in his love and making space to
