INTRODUCTION

kelantan is one of the thirteen states that make up the Federation of Malaysia. It is not the largest
state, but it is certainly the most developed, the richest and the most populous. The State of
Kelantan is a land blessed with diversity in cultures and traditions, languages, historical pieces and
arts, and a wide delightful gastronomy selection. As the most developed State in Malaysia,
Kelantan houses the largest seaport and airport in Malaysia and holds a plethora of the finest
infrastructure and communications facilities- which are among the best in the region.

Thus, we shall inform the readers of this handbook about the Kelantan Royal Family, their
distinctiveness, and the power they wield there. The history of Royal Kelantan, a look at the
Sultan's residence, and information on Kelantan Sultanate ceremonies are all included in this
handbook.

Other than that, this handbook gives the data about the Honors of Sultan Kelantan, Birthday
Ceremony of Sultan Kelantan and finally the legacy of Sultan Kelantan.

CHAPTER 1

Palace of Kelantan Sultanate

ISTANA JAHAR MUZIUM DIRAJA KELANTAN
Kota Bahru is the capital of Kelantan, and it's located at the west

peninsular Malaysia. It has a colourful local culture and it's also
Accession number: known as the 'cradle of Malay culture'. Istana Jahar (Jahar Palace)
is located at the cultural zone and easily reaches by accessing

The Istana Jahar was a royal residence in Kota Bharu, Kelantan,
Malaysia. It was built in 1855 by Sultan Muhammad II of Kelantan
for his grandson Long Kundur. The palace has a pentagon-
shaped porte-cochère with the first-floor balcony from which
members of the royal family could watch ceremonies held in
front of the palace. Today, the palace houses the Museum of
Royal Traditions and Customs of Kelantan.

The name Istana Jahar was given to that palace when a Jahar tree (The leaf of Figure 2 :
Jahar tree usually used by the Indian in curry dishes, whereby its flowers are OLD ISTANA BUILDING, KOTA BHARU
used by the Malays in the traditional Kelantanese food called as ‘kerabu’) was
planted in palace the compound under the order of Sultan Muhammad IV.

Since then the palace was famously known as the Istana Jahar. Later, the palace Accession number:
was given to his son Tengku Ismail using the title Tengku Seri Indera Mahkota.
After the death of Sultan Muhammad IV in 1920, Tengku Ismail replaced him 2001/0026810W
with the title of Sultan Ismail and stayed at Istana Jahar, endowed by his late
father. Later, Sultans of Kelantan which then as Sultan Ibrahim (1944-1960) and
Sultan Yahya Petra (1961-1979) no longer resided at the Istana Jahar .

THE GRAND PALACE

Figure 4 : The Grand Palace is located in Kota Bahru Kelantan. The palace is a
PINTU KOTA ISTANA BALAI BESAR KELANTAN single story building which was constructed by Sultan Muhammad
almost 170 years ago. The palace was known to be the official

residence of former sultans of Kelantan. Bull fights were a normal

2013/0022094W Istana Balai Besar was the official Royal Residence for the Kelantan
Sultanate. Sultan Muhamad II (1839-1886), Sultan Ahmad (1886-1889),
Sultan Muhammad III (1890-1891), Sultan Mansur (1891 – 1900) and
Sultan Muhammad IV(1900-1920) resided at the Palace. After Sultan
Muhammad IV, Istana Balai Besar was the venue for the Grand Royal
Events or Royal Traditional Events, up until today.

The palace is now used for official state functions and is not open to public. It Figure 5 :
only caters to Royal, State and Investiture functions. Anyhow, still can visit the PINTU KOTA ISTANA BALAI BESAR KELANTAN
huge front gate of Istana Balai Besar, resembling the craftsmanship and
unique of Muhamad Salleh’s work. His wood carving creativity has remained

unharmed. It is worth seeing even though from afar, as Istana Balai Besar is Accession number:
the most authentic Malay architectural design which has been passed on from
the past generation. 2013/0022092W

Istana Balai Besar comprises of a main house, middle house, kitchen area and

a veranda. Its enormous, massive walls surrounding the palace was engraved

with very fine, smooth and unique carvings, do really walk around the outer

palace and enjoy the art works. The designed paneling and embossed piercing

of the wood work decoration are simply amazing. It is also one of the only few

oldest Palace standing still in Malaysia, preserving the original structure and

design.

CHAPTER 2

Birthday of Ceremony Kelantan Sultanate

SULTAN YAHYA PETRA BIRTHDAY

He was born on at 4:00 pm. Monday 10 December
1917, Tengku Yahya Petra at Istana Balai Besar in
Kota Bharu, Kelantan. He was the second son of
Sultan Ibrahim ibni Almarhum Sultan Muhammad
IV (b. 1897; reigned 1944–1960).

The official event of the Birthday and Royal Tea
Party in conjunction with the birthday celebration
of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

CHAPTER 3

Legacy of Kelantan Sultanate

THE SULTAN YAHYA PETRA BRIDGE

The Sultan Yahya Petra Bridge spans the Kelantan River in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Malaysia. The renowned function
Object() { [native code] } Kien Huat Private Limited, a company owned by the Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong family, started
construction in 1962 at a cost of RM5 million. This bridge links Pasir Pekan in the Tumpat district with Kg Sireh in the city
of Bharu. Prior to the construction of this bridge, locals had to go to Pasir Mas, Tumpat, and Rantau Panjang by boat from
Pasir Mas Salor.

His Majesty the Sultan of Kelantan, Sultan Yahya Petra Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Ibrahim,
opened the Sultan Yahya Petra Bridge in Kota Bharu on April 17, 1965. The Sultan Yahya
Petra Bridge is a toll bridge. It is now Malaysia's first public road to be tolled as a result.
To recover the costs of building the new bridge, toll collection was necessary.

The Second Sultan Yahya Petra Bridge was constructed in 2007 with complete federal

support. In October 2013, the RM184.4 million construction project's complete opening

took place. The building of a 6-lane, multi-story road with bike and motorcycle facilities

linking Pasir Pekan to Bulatan Kijang, Jalan Hamzah to Wakaf Siku, and Jalan Sultan Figure 8

THE SULTAN YAHYA PETRA MOSQUE

the Sultan Yahya Petra Mosque is a Colonial mosque that was built in 1968. On Sunday, 26
Zulkaedah 1387H, or 25 February 1968 AD, YAB. Tun Abdul Razak bin Tun Hussein, Deputy Prime
Minister of Malaysia and Minister of Development and Rural Affairs, concluded the foundation
stone laying ceremony for the construction of this mosque.

His Royal Highness Sultan Yahya Petra Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Ibrahim dedicated the Sultan Yahya
Petra Mosque on Thursday, 22nd Muharram 1389H, equivalent to 10th April 1969 AD.

The mosque is managed by the Mosque's Parent Committee, which is chaired by YABrs. Lord
Colony Chief. The same mosque also has a Sub-Committee on Immortization, which is led by YBrs
Islamic Affairs Officer, who is also the Grand Imam of the Sultan Yahya Petra Mosque.

MAIK constantly seeks to empower mosque leadership by selecting management group officers in
order to increase management skills and the quality of mosque development in order to improve
mosque management to be more effective and efficient.

CHAPTER 4

Honors of Kelantan Sultanate

ASCEND THE THRONE

On July 10, 1960, Tengku Yahya Petra was enthroned as Sultan and Yang di-
Pertuan of Kelantan State, with the title "Sultan Yahya Petra," to succeed his
father, Ke Bawah Duli His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim ibni Late Sultan
Muhammad IV. Sultan Yahya Petra was appointed Colonel of the Malaysian
Artillery Brigade on October 6, 1966

Sultan Yahya Petra was appointed as the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong ole
Majlis Raja-King on July 22, 1970. The inauguration ceremony took place on
September 21, 1970. The Council of Rulers then chose His Majesty as
Malaysia's Yang di-Pertuan Agong on June 19, 1975. During His Majesty's
tenure as Yang di Pertuan Agong, His Highness Tengku Ismail Petra became
Acting Sultan.

CHAPTER 5

Ceremonies of Kelantan Sultanate

THE CORONATION OF SULTAN PETRA YAHYA
AS YDPA MALAYSIA

On February 28, 1976, His Royal Highness Tuanku Yahya Petra ibni Almarhum Sultan Ibrahim (the 27th Sultan of Kelantan)
was installed as the 6th Yang Di-Pertuan Agong. held at the rong seri hall, Dewan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. This quite historic
event was witnessed by Malay Kings, governors, Mr. President, the prime minister at the time Tun Hussien Onn, former
prime minister Tuanku Abdul Rahman, cabinet ministers, foreign diplomat chiefs, 612 dignitaries, the judges and millions
of Malaysians watching on television.

As the departure arrived, His Majesty inspected the parade of honor consisting of
108 officers and members of the 9th Battalion of the Royal Malay Soldiers.
Dressed in black official coronation clothes, His Majesty and the King Queen were
escorted to the royal throne which was located on the yellow seven tingkas stage.
Before the pledge was pronounced, with full of humility His Majesty kissed the
long royal dagger and as soon as His Majesty pronounced the pledge, the King
Bertabal song was hammered followed by 3 shouts of Daulat Tuanku and 21
rounds of cannon fire.

The enthronement ceremony of His Majesty Tuanku Yahya Petra ibni Almarhum Sultan Ibrahim was
accompanied by a group of royal coronations from Alor Setar, Kedah. His Majesty Tuanku Yahya Petra ibni
Almarhum Sultan Ibrahim was crowned at Istana Balai Besar, Kota Bharu, Kelantan on December 10, 1917.
In February 1948, he was appointed and proclaimed King of Kelantan with the title of Tengku Mahkota
Kelantan. His Majesty was later proclaimed Sultan of Kelantan on 10 July 1960 following the reign of his
father the late Sultan Ibrahim (26th Sultan of Kelantan).

On 21 October 1976, Yang Di Pertuan Agong Sultan Yahya Petra
awarded Johan Setia Mahkota (J.S.M.) to Mr. V.J Balasundram. The
rank is the last rank among the three ranks in the Royal Loyalty to the
Malaysian Crown (YMSMM). YMSMM is the fourth degree among the
ten degrees of the Royal Malaysian Award. The ceremony was held in
Kuala Lumpur.

On 21 October 1976, Yang Di Pertuan Agong Sultan Yahya Petra

bestowed the Degree of Greatness and Stars on Tuan Haji Shariff Buruk.

The rank is an award of greatness bestowed by His Majesty the Yang di-

Pertuan Agong to leaders and Malaysians who have made merit, effort

and sacrifice and have been devoted to the country. The ceremony was

held in Kuala Lumpur and was attended by many distinguished

members.

THE CORONATION OF SULTAN PETRA YAHYA AS
COLONEL COMMANDER MALAYSIAN

Sultan Yahya Petra was installed as Sultan of Kelantan
on July 17, 1961, with the title of Sultan Yahya Petra,
to replace his father, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim ibni
Almarhum Sultan Muhammad IV. On 6 October 1966,
Sultan Yahya Petra became the Colonel Commander
of the Malaysian Artillery Brigade.

Death & Funeral of Kelantan Sultanate

Sultan Yahya Petra died of a heart attack at 3:45 pm, Thursday 29 FIGURE 15:
March 1979 at the age of 61, at Istana Negara Kuala Lumpur. His

the postmortem was completed,
His Majesty's body was flown to
his native state, Kelantan Darul
Naim and buried at the Royal
Tomb Violation, Kota Bharu.

CONCLUSION

From completing this finding aids, we get to know the necessary skill for using and
finding essential resources in the finding aids of the National Archives of Malaysia.
Thus, in this assignment, we will see the history of Kelantan, ceremonies for him,
palace, birthday, legacy, honors of him, . In conclusion, Kelantan is a popular
tourism spot among Malaysia. There are a lot of building that been build to attract
tourist such as such as Pasar Besar Siti Khadijah, Muzium Diraja Istana Batu, Istana
Jahar and more. Other than that, Sultan Yahya Petra has made a lof contribution
for Kelantan economic.
