Tweety: Biography
Director Bob Clampett’s wartime spot-gag cartoon Wacky Blackout (1942) included a bit with a mother
bird teaching her son to fly. The big-headed, sleepy-eyed chick seems weak and confused, but suddenly
shows a fierce, martial moxie, shouting, “Aw, Ma—I wanna be a dive-bomber!”
Several months later, Clampett brought the baby bird back for A Tale of Two Kitties (1942). Hunted in his
nest by the Abbott-and-Costello-inspired cats Babbitt and Costello, the hatchling once again initially
appeared unassuming, only to surprise audiences by fiercely fending off the “puddy tats” with clubs and
anvils. The name Tweety came with the bird’s second major role in the Birdy and the Beast (1944).
The original incantation of Tweety was featherless and pink, reflecting his newborn nature. Clampett
later added feathers creating the yellow canary we know today. With his big eyes and tiny voice, Tweety
has mastered the art of deception. The unquestionably cute little birdie is also deliciously
devious. Tweety draws his adversaries his way, trapping them in an entertaining game of will versus wits.
Any seeming maliciousness is offset by Tweety’s incandescent cuteness and wry one-liners. This wee,
winged rapscallion is no ordinary bird. His favorite mark, Sylvester the Cat, is more of a pastime than a
nemesis. Tweety is as sunny as he is mischievous, loves to sing tunes, swing high in his cage, and dream
of his next victory. His endearing personality has made him beloved for generations.
Tweety starred in numerous films, including a second Oscar winner, Birds Anonymous (1957). Tweety
remained an audience favorite, starring in a long-running TV series, The Sylvester and Tweety Mysteries
(1995-2002), as well as an eponymous film, Tweety’s High Flying Adventure (2000). Tweety also made a
memorable solo appearance in Who Framed Roger Rabbit when he recreated his “This Little Piggy”
routine with a flagpole-dangling Bob Hoskins, sending the film’s hero plummeting to the ground.
Most recently, Tweety appeared in 2021’s Space Jam: A New Legacy, captivating a new generation of
fans. He scored 61 points in the final Tune Squad vs. Goon Squad game, proving once again that the
small, cute character can outsmart his bigger and stronger adversaries.
Tweety’s favorite song:
“I Twat I Saw A Puddy Tat” Song – Mel Blanc
“I am a little tiny bird, my name is Tweety Pie
I live inside my birdcage-a hanging way up high
I like to swing upon my perch and sing my little song
But there’s a cat that’s after me and won’t let me alone
I twat I saw a puddy tat a-creeping up on me
I did, I taw a puddy tat as plain as he could be”
