FOELPM POSTGRADUATE EDUCATION SYMPOSIUM 2022
MESSAGE FROM THE
ADVISOR OF PGES 2022
Education plays a foundational role in achieving sustainability of
quality education. The Faculty of Education, Languages, Psychology
and Music (FoELPM) decided on the theme ‘Contemporary Research
for Sustainable Educational Practices’ because of the need to
recognize the pivotal and central role of educational research in
improving practices and advancing innovations in teaching and
learning. It is more than just doing research for the sake of obtaining
the degree, or fulfilling the condition of getting a research grant, there
is a need for meaningful researching, the need for research on
contemporary and urgent issues faced by education fraternity. The
purpose is to search for research which can give impactful findings to
current issues faced by education sectors and society at large. In a
nutshell, determine area of study which is crucial to issues we are
facing right now, area of study which can bring us sustainability in
provision of equitable and quality of education. As we keep abreast of
current issues, we will notice the many potential relevant and
important research topics.
Judging from the topics of abstracts received, and the presentations
delivered, the objectives of illuminating the importance of post-
graduate research has largely been achieved. We hope this would
further motivate our postgraduate students in continuing their journey
in completing their research, knowing the impact of their findings will
be for sustainable educational practices. It is an on-going and un-
ending journey for academicians, but a rewarding and meaningful
one. Press on, postgraduate students! it will be worth the time spent
and the anxiety you faced. Press on too, fellow supervisors, we see the
fruition of our hard work too !

MESSAGE FROM THE ADVISOR of PGES 2022
It has always been my desire to promote research practice as well as
bridging the relationship among students, and between students and
lecturers in the same university or between universities, postgraduate
study requires opening to opinions, collaboration, ability to create and
thinking beyond the boundaries. It is our fervent wish to instill the love
of this creation of new knowledge among our students and we hope
the seed for seeking of answers to questions arises in our mind as we
practice will continue to flourish.
It is a short symposium but it is a memorable one. The hard work and
the collaborative spirit among FoELPM staffs and lecturers are simply
amazing. On behalf of the university management as well as my
capacity as the Dean of the faculty I wish to sincerely thank each one
of you for your dedication, time spent in getting all this together, it isn’t
a simple task. A big applause to all of you, you are great and
dependable, thank you so much. Syabas !
On behalf of the faculty, we wish to say a big thank you to the top
management of the university, VC, DVC, Deans, Head of departments,

WELCOME MESSAGE
FROM CHAIRPERSON
On behalf of the Faculty of Education, Languages, Psychology and
Music, SEGi University, it is my pleasure to welcome all participants to
our inaugural Post Graduate Education Symposium (PGES) 2022.
The main aim of this hybrid symposium is to provide a platform for
postgraduate students to fuel intellectual discussions on
contemporary research for sustainable educational practices.
Scholarly discussions like these will not only promote the
advancement of new knowledge in terms of theory, research and
practice, but also provide sustainable solutions to current issues and
concerns in the field of education at all levels.
This two-day symposium includes more than 50 paper presentations
by post graduate students and eight workshops on contemporary
research methods and discipline areas that are gaining prominence
in today’s education circle. It is my sincere hope that these sessions
will provide participants the opportunity to deliberate on theoretical
underpinnings, practical implications and obtain constructive
feedback.
In recognition of the power of research to draw valid, reliable and
accurate conclusions to current gaps in research, this inaugural
hybrid symposium is aptly themed, Contemporary Research for
Sustainable Educational Practices. Today, as we witness a global
paradigm shift towards embracing sustainability, it is pertinent that as
responsible citizens on planet Earth, we align ourselves to UNECSO’s
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) goals for 2030.

WELCOME MESSAGE FROM CHAIRPERSON
Hence, as educators we need to act as a catalyst in both research and
teaching and learning initiatives wherein, we can empower our learners
with knowledge, skills and a value system to make informed decisions
that can bring forth personal and societal transformation to address
interconnected global challenges facing the world today.
This symposium also marks the launch of the online version of our bi-
annual Asia-Pacific Journal of Business, Humanities and Education
(APJBHE), first launched in 2017. Given the current dynamic editorial
board and editors, I am confident this online version will improve its
global visibility as more readers will be able to access the articles and
consequently improve its ranking in the near future.
To conclude, I would like to take this opportunity to express my
appreciation to the honoured guests and symposium participants for
their support. A special heartfelt thanks also goes to all members of the
PGES 2022 organising committee for making this symposium a reality
within one month of preparation. Kudos to the FoELPM-PG Team!
I wish all participants a fruitful symposium.
Thank you

The launching of the Asia Pacific Journal of Business, Humanities &
Education (APJBHE) is an event to celebrate knowledge creation. Firstly,
knowledge creation as our postgraduate students: blooming researchers,
delivered their research conception or findings, this is manifestation of
verbal knowledge. Secondly, we are also celebrating written knowledge,
the written work of our postgraduate students which are potential journal
articles to journal such as the Asia Pacific Journal of Business, Humanities
& Education (APJBHE): a journal by SEGi university which has been in
publications since 2017.
Knowledge creation is the highest accolade in the pursue of academic
excellence. Knowledge is created as we speak about it and ultimately
document it in words to be recorded in a publication such as journals. I
am glad that our postgraduate students have made their first step, my
advice to you is to let the momentum begin and continue to publish your
thoughts and research findings in journals.
The Asia Pacific Journal of Business, Humanities & Education (APJBHE)
publishes articles in the areas of Business, Humanities and Education.
APJBHE currently publishes twice annually in May and November. The year
2022 is a defining year for the journal, APJBHE has been refreshed and
strongly revived, now it is published online by the Faculty of Education,
Language, Psychology and Music (FoELPM) with an international and
national editorial team from the Education, Business, and Humanities
disciplines.
11 |Page
The main aim of the journal is to provide a platform for academics and
students alike to present and share their research findings, both conceptual
and empirical to be widely acknowledged and referred to within the circles of
the network. APJBHE is peer-reviewed and is in the process of acquiring various
indexing.
My fellow postgraduate students and academic staff, I challenge you to
embrace academic writing. What is more fulfilling than sharing your ideas.
Ideas are dead if is it is not shared. Submit your articles to APJBHE, be involved
in the academic rigour, enjoy the adrenalin gland overflowing seeing your
article being published, contribute towards the evidence-based practice
where your research findings is being used to solve problem or shed lights

TRANSITION FROM PRESCHOOL TO PRIMARY ONE IN HEBI CITY, CHINA: THE
PERCEPTIONS OF TEACHERS, HEADTEACHERS AND PARENTS
Li Runqi
ABSTRACT
China's Ministry of Education has announced an action plan, and the Ministry of Education's
"Guidance on vigorously promoting the scientific alignment of kindergarten and elementary
school", issued on April 9, 2021, specifies a number of provisions and requirements (MOE),
2021). Due to the long-standing influence of traditional culture and educational systems, there
has been a significant gap between preschool (kindergarten) and primary school in terms of
curriculum content and teaching strategies. Additionally, the two stage systems, namely
preschool and elementary school, are disconnected from one another, which has caused a
painful and challenging issue in the fundamentals of education. Children's education has risen
to the top of families' priorities due to the lack of high-quality educational resources, and
parents have been concerned about their children's education since they were little children.
Teachers and parents have long been concerned about the curricular integration between
kindergarten and elementary school. This study will investigate teachers', principals', and
parents' perceptions of preschool children's transition from preschool to primary school in Hebi
City, in Henan Province, China. My research focuses on what views and opinions teachers,
headteachers, and parents have after the introduction of the New Action Plan, as well as what
concerns they have when their children enter the first grade from preschool to be better
prepared for the

NURTURING CHINESE EFL COLLEGE STUDENTS’ READING
COMPETENCY THROUGH EXTENSIVE READING WITH READING STRATEGY
TRAINING
Rae Wang Rui & Shameem Rafik- Galea
ABSTRACT
Extensive reading (ER) has been shown to be an effective approach in helping English as
second language (L2) students learn to read in the target language. Numerous studies
have advocated the use of ER as a means to improve students reading competency in the
EFL context supported by other approaches such as the use of reading strategies. In the
context of China, students do not have adequate exposure to reading in English and or
communicating in English. Thus, it is important to understand the extent to which
extensive reading with reading strategy training have an effect on Chinese EFL College
students’ reading competency. The study adopted a quasi-experimental, pretest-posttest
design with two intact classes which were assigned as experimental and control groups.
Both quantitative and qualitative methods for data collection were used. The findings
indicated statistically significant gains in the reading competency post-test scores of the
experimental group compared to the control group. It revealed that extensive reading with
reading strategy training instruction had positive effect on
the EFL students reading competency. The findings suggests that extensive reading with
reading strategy training can be effectively implemented to promote reading competency
among Chinese EFL students. The presentation will share how the EFL students were provided
with ER and reading strategy training apart from offering suggestions for further research.

THE EFFECT OF GAME-BASED LEARNING ON CREATIVITY TRAINING FOR
COLLEGE STUDENTS: A QUASI-EXPERIMENTAL STUDY BASED ON THE IPO
MODEL
Wang Rui
ABSTRACT
Creativity has been identified as an essential characteristic for college students to graduate. Several
studies have shown that game-based learning (GBL) can enhance students’ creativity as they
motivate students to learn, increase engagement, and provide challenges for participants to think
and then develop cognition in problem-solving. The following are the objectives of the study are 1)
To identify the overall characteristics of creativity among college students in Anhui Province, China,
2) To explore the changes in creative tendencies of college students in GBL and traditional groups
after creativity training. 3) To explore the significant differences in learning outcomes
(affective/cognitive/skills) of creativity training between GBL and traditional learning groups. and 4)
To clarify the relationship between game immersion and learning outcomes in GBL. This study has
two stages. In the first stage of this study, a cross-sectional method will be adopted. Data from a
convenient sample of 1000 college students from Wuhu, Anhui Province, China will be collected. In
the second stage, a quasi-experimental research approach will be adopted. This stage will use a
Solomon control experiment research design, and 240 students will complete the experiment in six
weeks. A possible finding is that GBL is an effective strategy for creativity training and the mediators
are intrinsic motivation and game immersion. This study can enrich the theoretical contribution of
GBL strategies on the creativity impact mechanism research and theory-driven research. The study
is a practical guide to creativity training in college education.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BIG-FIVE FACTOR MODEL OF PERSONALITY ON
JOB INVOLVEMENT: EVIDENCE FROM THE NOVICE KINDERGARTEN
TEACHERS IN ZHEJIANG PROVINCE, CHINA
Yu Wang
ABSTRACT
With the increasing attention on the quality of preschool education due to the recent social and
economic development in China, the purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship
between personality traits, which include extraversion, neuroticism, openness,
conscientiousness, agreeableness (namely the Big Five Factor Model of Personality) on job
involvement of the novice kindergarten teachers in one selected province in China. Choosing
and having the 'right' candidate selected to be an early childhood educator is vital in ensuring
the achievement of the expectations of the parents and the nation. A simple random sampling
technique and self-administered questionnaire were conducted in selecting 923 novice
kindergarten teachers in the Zhejiang Province, China, as respondents of this study. Using IBM
SPSS 26 software to analyse the data, the hypotheses that extraversion, neuroticism,
openness, conscientiousness, and agreeableness have a positive and significant relationship
on job
involvement of novice kindergarten teachers is highly supported. In addition, the results of the
correlation analyses indicated that extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and
openness were positively and significantly correlated with job involvement, even though
neuroticism was negatively correlated with job involvement. The results of this study suggest
that the Big Five-Factor Model of Personality is useful for examining the dispositional source
of job engagement of novice teachers in preschool settings in China. The study informs the
policymakers, the Ministry of Education and the kindergarten management personnel on the
importance of engaging the kindergarten teachers' Big Five-Factor Model of Personality on job
involvement in improving teaching quality and effectiveness to young learners in China.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN ENGLISH TEACHING
Zheng Huanmin
ABSTRACT
The current situation of English teaching in universities in China is not conducive to the future
development of students and society. English teachers should change their ideas, adhere to
the concept of sustainable development in teaching, all for the development of students, help
students master scientific learning strategies, cultivate students' healthy emotional attitudes,
and let education truly serve the development of students and society. So the main factors
restricting the sustainable development of English education in universities should be
analyzed, and countermeasures for promoting sustainable development of university English
education are to be explored.

RESEARCH ON COLLEGE STUDENTS' SENSE OF ACQUISITION OF
IDEOLOGICAL AND POLITICAL COURSE BASED ON GROUNDED THEORY: A
CASE STUDY
Cao Chunqiu
ABSTRACT
Chinese government has made a series of important arrangements to improve the teaching
quality of ideological and political courses. However, college students' sense of acquisition
of ideological and political courses is an important index to test and evaluate the teaching
effect of ideological and political courses. This qualitative case study aims to explore the
influencing factors of college students' sense of acquisition of ideological and political
courses. This research conducted in-depth interviews with five teachers and five students
and used grounded theory to explore the influencing factors model. The model shows that
the factors influencing college students' sense of acquisition of ideological and political
courses include two dimensions and five categories. But flow experience is the core factor.
First of all, help college students recognize themselves, achieve flow experience, and
improve their sense of acquisition of learning. Secondly, help teachers recognize the
factors that affect students' sense of
acquisition, and improve the teaching effect. It is of key significance to grasp the current
situation of college students' sense of acquisition of ideological and political courses and
explore effective ways to enhance their sense of acquisition of ideological and political courses.

EFL STUDENTS’ CHALLENGES IN USING VLOG TO IMPROVE SPEAKING
SKILLS
Luhan Feng, Fong Yee Lee & Sook Jhee Yoon
Abstract
Cultivating students’ speaking skills in vocational education institutions in China has long been
a major challenge in EFL classrooms. Numerous studies have demonstrated that reflection
could assist students improve their language proficiency. As vlogs have become more
integrated with the younger generations, EFL teachers attempted using vlogs to improve
students’ speaking skills. Recorded vlogs allow students to reflect on their speaking and can
assist them in identifying their problem areas. This presentation focuses on challenges faced
by the students when they used vlogs to improve their speaking skills. The study was
conducted in a vocational college at Chongqing, China. By employing a participatory action
research design, this study involved an EFL teacher guiding a group of 34 students in
generating presentation vlogs, followed by reflecting on students’ experiences of producing the
vlogs based on Gibbs’ reflective cycle (Gibbs, 1988). Throughout the cycle, the teacher and
students worked on several language tasks. Data was collected through semi-structured
interviews with
the students. The findings show that students faced language, psychological and technological
challenges when they used vlogs. The findings point to a need for better task design and the
kinds of guidance students need to use vlogs. Although students are digital natives, explicit
instructions have to be in place rather than assuming that students would know how to record
vlogs for language learning purposes.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EMOTIONAL REGULATION AND
ACADEMIC PROCRASTINATION AMONG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS
Guo Wei & Dr. Lee Phaik Gaik
ABSTRACT
Academic procrastination is a serious problem in university and has negative effects such as
persistent stress and negative emotions among the undergraduates. Emotional regulation is a
protective factor that has an essential impact on academic procrastination. It is found that
students with high emotional regulation can effectively solve their problems, cope with
academic pressure, and avoid academic procrastination. Similarly previous studies also found
that procrastination among undergraduates is prevalence and is significantly related to
emotional regulation, coping strategies, and self-esteem. In line with the findings, it is believed
that undergraduates who experience positive emotion regulation have a significant impact on
reducing academic procrastination. Thus, in this study, two theories: Self-Determination
Theory and Skinner Reinforcement Theory form a basis for explaining the relationship between
emotional regulation and academic procrastination. Both theories postulate ideas that center on
a person’s motivation and determination. A conceptual framework which composed of three
sub-constructs of emotional regulation raised by Daniel Goleman of Emotional Intelligence;
and three sub-constructs of Davidson's Academic Procrastination explain the relationship
between emotional regulation and academic procrastination. The theoretical and conceptual
framework will further help educators and policymakers to develop an intervention such as
"Harnessing emotions productively," whereby students are more responsible and less impulsive
in their behavior. It is hoped that this study can provide some thinking dimensions and
directions for university administrators, professional teachers, counselors, undergraduates, and
their parents.

EFL INSTRUCTOR IMMEDIATE BEHAVIORS AND STUDENT STATE
MOTIVATION: MEDIATING ROLE OF PERCEIVED IMMEDIACACY
Chen Xian
ABSTRACT
The promotion of EFL students’ motivation has become the primary goal for the ultimate
achievement of sustainable teaching and learning, which has sometimes been overlooked
by EFL instructors. The study sought to examine the effect of instructor verbal and
nonverbal immediate behaviors on student state motivation in the EFL educational
contexts. More specifically, a model was tested in which EFL instructor verbal and
nonverbal immediate behaviors influenced EFL student state motivation through the
mediating role of perceived immediacy. A questionnaire survey was conducted among 313
undergraduate students from 5 universities located in different provinces of China. The
results showed that both instructor verbal and nonverbal immediate behaviors
significantly enhanced student perceived immediacy, thereby significantly increasing
student state motivation. Perceived immediacy was identified as the partial mediator in
the model. The findings emphasize the critical role
EFL instructors play in the enhancement of their students’ language learning motivation
through their immediate behaviors. Thus, the findings suggest that effective integration of
instructor immediate behaviors in EFL pedagogy is necessary. The current investigation not
only offers insights into the influence of EFL instructor immediate behaviors on their student
state motivation, but will also discuss the complex interplay between EFL instructor immediate
behaviors and their student state motivation.

EDUCATIONAL INHERITANCE AND DEVELOPMENT OF MUSIC ELEMENTS
IN CHINA'S INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE
Chong Xue
ABSTRACT
This topic is based on the intangible cultural heritage of Xinjiang music (e.g., Tajik folk songs;
The Kazak Kwei and Sibizi; Uyghur advocacy music, Daolang Rewap; Xinjiang Mongolian short
tune folk songs), taking Tajik, Kazak, Uygur and Mongolian music works as examples, to study
how they apply intangible musical elements in the development process of contemporary
music. It is conducive to the protection and inheritance of traditional music. This study uses
field investigation, interview and literature analysis to sort out and summarize the collected
data.In the creation of Xinjiang style piano music, the composer mostly uses 5/4, 5/8 and other
mixed meter, which breaks the fixed law of strength and weakness, and all kinds of meter
appear alternately. In terms of rhythm, there are commonly weak rhythm, syncopated rhythm,
adjunctive rhythm and triplet rhythm. In Xinjiang Uygur folk songs, the phenomenon of weak
rhythm is particularly prominent, which is related to the logic stress of Uygur language.
Parabolic melody is the melody from low to high to the highest point, and then down back to
the sound, the melody forms a parabolic shape. In Xinjiang-style piano works, the form of high
overlapping chord (nine chord, eleven chord, thirteen chord) is frequently used. In the 21st
century of multi-cultural integration, it is more conducive to the protection and promotion of
traditional music under the background of "One Belt and One Road" to find the innovation of
external communication and internal inheritance of our excellent traditional music and find a
suitable path for its development.

ABSTRACT
To attain a clearer picture of the present study, it is necessary to situate this research into the
wider academic field it belongs to and identify with clarity the variables that the topic of this
study embraces. This aspect is addressed in the first paragraphs. Afterward, the way key
terms are used in this research work is explained, followed by a preliminary introduction of
research orientations associated with the topic of the study, including some references
regarding the Chinese context. This research explores the effects of two vocabulary teaching
methods on young learners’ attention and word recall, which are deemed core aspects of
vocabulary acquisition and represent the dependent variables of this study. The participants
are 5-to-7- year-old Chinese students. On the one hand, a widely used teaching method is
employed with some adaptations based on chants paired with gestures. Both represent the
independent variables of the study. Besides, to my understanding, the latter method is not
explicitly explored in formal research despite being somewhat practiced in the EFL
classroom, which may represent a potential novelty included in the present research. Both
methods are compared to observe their impact and effectiveness in relation to the dependent
variables noted above.

ABSTRACT
The field of second language acquisition (SLA) has witnessed a positive turn with the growing
wave of positive psychology at the turn of the 21st century. This witnessed a focus on a more
sustainable holistic study of both positive and negative emotions, shedding new light into the
study of foreign language anxiety (FLA). Therefore, this study investigated the levels of FLA
among Chinese tertiary students from a positive psychology perspective, aiming to explore the
facilitating impact of anxiety in foreign language learning. The study adopted an explanatory
sequential research design and was conducted at one public university located in Hunan
province, China. It involved 490 tertiary EFL students wherein data were collected via a
questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using the SPSS
whilst qualitative data were analyzed thematically. The results indicated that: (1) participants
possessed moderate levels of multidimensional FLA; (2) participants of positive individual
traits from three levels of FLA showed a higher inclination of transforming FLA into
motivation for learning English; (3) students’ relationships with English teachers,
roommates/classmates, and parents directly affected their English learning performance and
FLA experiences. The kernel of this study lies in the rethinking of more sustainable view of
FLA, which could be facilitative when positive personal experience, individual traits and
relationships were taken into foreign language learning. Theoretically, the study sheds light on
the sustainable and positive side of FLA and contributes to sustainable EFL education in China.

REFLECTING ON CONDUCTING AN ONLINE QUALITATIVE CASE STUDY
DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC
Guo Chuan & Sook Jhee Yoon
ABSTRACT
In the past, an online qualitative study was primarily reserved for researchers interested in
online cultures, such as social media and gaming (Carter, Shih, Williams, Degeling, &
Mooney-Somers, 2021). However, the pandemic, which has spread throughout the world,
has forced researchers to move data collection from the face-to-face environment to online
forms of data collection (Lobe, Morgan, & Hoffman, 2020). This presentation is the main
author’s reflection on his experience in conducting a qualitative case study online due to
the Covid-19 lockdown. Initially planned for a case study involving teachers of a university
at China, the study had to be redesigned due to the Covid-19 restrictions. This presentation
presents how the authors plan an online qualitative case study, advantages of the data
collection strategies used, and the challenges faced in conducting an online qualitative
case study. The presentation also describes the ethical considerations involved in while
dealing with the participants and data. Finally, the presentation discusses how the lessons
learned from conducting an online qualitative case study may be transferrable to future
research.

SELF-REGULATED LEARNING AND BLENDED LEARNING EXPERIENCE: A
CASE STUDY AMONG EFL LEARNERS IN A CHINESE PUBLIC UNIVERSITY
Hu Jianan & Ng Soo Boon
ABSTRACT
The last three years of Covid-19 outbreak has brought about a new normal in teaching and
learning in China universities. Blended Learning (BL) and online learning became a common
feature. BL fulfils the condition set by the Ministry of Education China to reduce physical
contact but at the same time adhere to academic requirement of all courses, including that
of College English which is compulsory for all university students. Literature indicated that
self- regulated learning (SRL) is a necessity to effective BL. The study was designed to
investigate the level of EFL students’ SRL ability and their Blended Learning Experience
(BLE), ascertaining the relationship between these two variables and confirming whether
SRL will affect BLE. This study was conducted in a public university in Hebei China among
its EFL freshmen. A mixed method design was used involving the administration of
questionnaire measuring EFL learners’ SRL and BLE, and focus group interviews exploring
in-depth reasons and factors that influence their experience in BL. Quantitative results
showed that EFL learners
have high SRL level and positive BLE. There is no significant difference in EFL learners’ SRL
between different genders and places of residence. SRL has a significant effect on BLE.
Qualitative results indicated that there are differences in perceptions on BL among EFL
Learners with different SRL levels. Teachers are recommended to improve EFL learners’ SRL
by adopting strategies in the self-regulatory process proposed in Zimmerman’s Cyclical Model
of SRL, and to enhance their BLE by adopting differentiated instruction through creating
learning environment and grouping EFL learners according to their SRL level. These findings
are expected to assist EFL teachers and higher educational institutions to improve their
teaching
of college English taking into consideration BLE and SRL.

AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT FRAMEWORK TO DEVELOP EFL LEARNER
AUTONOMY AND 22ND CENTURY LEARNER SKILLS IN A UNIVERSITY IN
HEBEI PROVINCE
Hu Jingbo
ABSTRACT
In general, assessment practices in the Chinese education context appear to be monotonous
and unitary. Albeit, the adoption of assessment methods is constantly undergoing reforms, the
assessment practices seem to continue adopting a monolithic educational convention in China.
The principal reason is that education in China is largely test-oriented, and standardized tests
are the conventional means of measuring performance and learning outcomes. However,
standardized tests do not enhance motivation, learner autonomy, and learner skills. In
addressing the limitations, the employment of authentic assessment is a possible option for
engaging students in real-world practices and enhancing their learning abilities. The
constructivist learning theory advocates the use of authentic assessments as it positively
correlates with learner autonomy and learning skills for cognitive flexibility. Thus, a study will
be conducted to investigate the effects of authentic assessment on the development of learner
autonomy and 22nd-century learner skills. Specifically, the aim is to develop an authentic
assessment framework to develop learner autonomy and 22nd-century learner skills. A quasi-
experimental design will be utilized to measure the effects of the authentic assessment
treatment on 75 second-year EFL undergraduates’ learner autonomy and skills in a natural
classroom setting. Learner autonomy and learner skills questionnaires, classroom observation
checklists, and semi-structured interview questions with teachers and students will be
conducted to gather quantitative and qualitative data. The proposed framework would provide
both administrators and teachers with new insights on how to effectively adopt authentic
assessment in EFL classrooms, enhance teachers’ assessment literacy, and enrich
teachers’
instruction-related knowledge and skills.

THE ROLE OF POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY FACTORS TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE
EFL LEARNING
Hu Xiaoyu & Gurnam Kaur Sidhu
ABSTRACT
With a global paradigm shift towards positive psychology, there is a pivotal focus on exploring
learners’ positive psychology factors for sustainable learning. Two factors that have gained
much attention in the field of EFL are growth mindset and grit. Therefore, this study aimed to
examine the relationship between growth mindset, grit, and English language performance in a
public university in China. This study employed an explanatory sequential research design,
involving 388 second-year EFL students in a public university in China. Data were collected via
a survey questionnaire, an English language performance test, and semi-structured interviews.
The quantitative data were analysed descriptively and inferentially using SPSS 26.0 and AMOS
24.0, and the qualitative data were analysed thematically using NVivo 12.0. The quantitative
findings indicated that Chinese EFL college students possessed a moderate to high level of
growth mindset and a moderate to high level of grit. The qualitative data revealed mixed
findings. The structural equation modelling analysis revealed that grit partially mediated
the relationship between growth mindset and English language performance. The findings
imply that growth mindset and grit could lead to higher English language performance.
Therefore, it is perhaps timely for EFL instructors to stand up and address these variables in
their classrooms. This paper provides both theoretical and practical implications for integrating
positive psychology in language learning for the sustainable development of EFL learners.

SELECTING AUTHENTIC VIDEOS FOR TEACHING ORAL FLUENCY
TEACHING IN EFL CLASSROOM
Hu Yu & Sook Jhee Yoon
ABSTRACT
College English teaching has gone through decades of reform in aims to improve students’
speaking proficiency. In fluency teaching, the lack of clear understanding towards fluency
as well as the systematic methods to address fluency aspects result in teachers focused
more on speaking practice rather than fluency specifically (Tavakoli, 2020). Despite the
many efforts to support English learning among college students, they are not able to speak
fluently (Liu, 2022). As authentic English-language audiovisual media has become more
integrated into our every day’s life, English teachers have attempted to integrate authentic
audiovisual materials in EFL classrooms to develop students’ speaking proficiency.
Although authentic videos have been studied extensively, there is not much focus on how
authentic videos can be used to develop fluency among EFL learners. As part of a larger
participatory action research, this presentation focuses on only one area, which is how
teachers select authentic video to teach oral fluency in the EFL classroom. Working closely
with one teacher, data was gathered
through classroom observation, think-aloud, reflective journal, and semi-structured interview.
The findings suggest that teachers select authentic videos based on the principles of
constructive alignment, that they align video selection with learning outcomes related to oral
fluency. The findings contribute in identifying a classification list of authentic videos and the
selection criterial for each category. These findings can contribute toward language materials
selection, specifically on the considerations to make in selecting authentic video to teach
students for their EFL fluency development
