ESSAY: THE MOST
REMEMBERED DAY IN MY LIFE
REFERENCES
The Most Remembered Day in My Life
A strong dose of sunlight breaking through my window awoke me from my slumber.
My ears caught the sounds of Bollywood rhythms interspersed with laughter outside.
Deepavali celebrations are right around the corner, so my Hindu neighbours were excited and
getting busy with their preparations. When Deepavali crossed my mind, I recalled an incident
that happened that day. On the day everyone rejoiced, yet I still couldn’t accept that fact. As
if the incident that I will never forget from two years ago just happened yesterday. The incident
also gave me the most meaningful lesson in my life which is to listen to the elder. I almost lost
my life when I ignore their advice. This has happened when I fought with my parents just
because of some silly reasons. I was involved in an accident two years ago in the tragedy of
Cameron Highlands.
Two years ago, my family and I celebrated Deepavali at our penthouse in Cameron
Highlands which is located in Brinchang. This has been our family tradition to celebrate any
holiday there but who knows that it will turn to be a tragic holiday in my life. As soon as we
arrived, I ran to the right side of the penthouse because the view never fails to amaze me.
“Nadine, I told you many times, don’t go there. It’s dangerous” My father shouted and my
mother at the side was looking at me while squeezing her waist. My strict parents never
allowed me to go near the steep area even when I just want to take a picture but I kept being
stubborn. I just don’t get it, I’m big enough to take care of myself. That night, we planned to
go to our favorite restaurant for a dinner but the rain didn’t stop pouring since evening, so my
mother insisted on just eating at home. After spending a night at the penthouse, unfortunately,
a landslide occurred not far from my penthouse because rain poured heavily those days.
People near the location were advised to not go out by the polices for a few days because the
landslide could still occur.
After not returning for a year, I planned a date with my friends to meet up at Century
Pines Resort. We planned to relax in the spa and we will throw a party at night. However,
because of the landslide, my parents forbade me to go. I remained stubborn and gave a lot
of reasons to assure them. I was very disappointed when I couldn’t go anywhere even to meet
up with friends because of the landslide. The same happened to my friends but they said that
they would go out without telling their parents without knowing that something would happen
to them.
That day, after getting messages from my friend saying that they were on the way to
the hotel, I tip-toed to the door but I got caught by my father. “Nadine! Where are you going?!
Do you still wanna hang out with your friends? Why are you so stubborn?” my father sounded
1
so mad. I fought with my parents for about thirty minutes and I realized that I was already late
for the date.
“Nadine……” my father look back but I was no longer there and the penthouse’s car
key was also not in its place. “Bang!” my father slammed the door angrily. When my father
was not facing me, I took the chance to sneakily go out and drive to the location. After driving
for about two minutes, I got a phone call and I thought it was from my friend but it turned to be
Mrs. Marina, my friend’s mother. “Hello… sob.. sob..” Mrs. Marina said that my friend was
involved in an accident because of a landslide. I remained silent for about one minute because
I couldn’t believe it. “Pin! Pin!” the honking sound brought me back to reality and the rock of
the landslide effect in front of me was inevitable. The crash sound was so loud and my world
slowly darkened.
My eyes opened slowly, I could only see a white wall and white ceiling. There was also
a woman in white beside me, the smell of anesthesia made me realize that I’m at the hospital.
I tried to move my head but suddenly my whole world spinning, as if everything around me
was moving around. I closed my eyes again. “Nadine…” I heard my mother’s voice calling me,
I opened my eyes slowly and the dizziness disappear slowly. I could see my mother crying in
my father’s hug. “Thank God. My daughter is awake” I couldn’t hold my tears when I heard
that. I broke my leg thanks to my stubbornness.
My friends were still in the emergency room and I could not imagine if I was in that car
too. I was told that my friend’s car was crushed under the rubble and they had to call firemen
to get them out of the car. I cried out of my eyes while apologizing to my parents and I am glad
that my parents forgave me and said that they just want me to be safe. I realized that parents
are strict because they love, not hate. At the hospital, I met with my friend's parents and
apologized. I felt very guilty because I’m part of the plan. They look so worried and it made
me feel so bad for them and also my parents. After three hours, doctors went out of the
emergency room and we were told that all of my friends could not be saved. The situation
outside of the room suddenly became sorrowful and it left marks in both my mind and heart
until today.
After two years, we were finally ready to return to the penthouse after the tragedy. I
accepted the fact that nothing could change even if I remained sad and we shouldn’t cry over
spilled milk, the important thing is to take it as a lesson and never repeat the same mistake.
We went to visit my friends’ graves and their families, I’m glad that none of them keep angry
with me. Therefore, the most important lesson I learned from the day I remembered the most
is, we must always listen to the elders as long as it is for our good sake.
