I had a wonderful time exploring,
in microscopic detail, the materials
supplied by Muntons and was amazed
by how complex, and technically
advanced, the production of malt is. The
big surprise for me was the incredible
purity and glass-like clarity of the
light malt extract. The maltose sugars
produced from the barley through the
malting process made it wonderfully
sweet and aromatic to the taste – my

award-winning muntons malt and folk
Award winning sums up the tone of this year perfectly. It started
at the RMI Analytics Global Brewing Supply Awards ceremony held
at The World Barley, Malt & Beer Conference (WBMB) in Dublin on
11th March, where Muntons picked up the top prize – ‘Maltster of
the Year’. This global award was presented to the company who, in
the opinion of the judges, best demonstrated exceptional financial
returns, strong growth and innovation strategies plus market
leadership in its sector. In addition, judges looked for evidence of
inventiveness, ethical credentials, good stakeholder relationships and
long term planning, balanced by the flexibility to deliver consistent
results in dynamic market conditions.
The WBMB attracted nearly 300 attendees from the global brewing
supply industry for their three-day conference, including over 70%
of the brewing trade, the majority of global barley malt traders and
many of the world’s maltsters. The theme of the conference was
’growing a better world’ focusing on the sustainable supply of the
key ingredients for beer; barley, malt, hops and yeast. RMI’s Dublin
based WBMB conference was the eighth in a long running series
of conferences serving the brewing industry since 2001. This year
the brewing supply industry awards was added to the event for
the first time, putting Muntons on the top of the list.

trickling in, courtesy of plant breeders and
advances in agronomic practices on the
farm. New varieties go through extensive
assessments considering factors such as
resistance to field diseases, yields, and
resistance to lodging*. They are micro
malted to assess potential uses for each
variety, looking at specific traits for the
end-user such as extract and beta glucan
enzyme levels. The barley variety ‘Propino’
is the current safe bet and after several
seasons continues to give a consistently
good performance. New varieties showing
promise for brewing are ‘Irina’ and ‘Planet’
which are both showing improvements
in yield, agronomy, malting and brewing
performance. These alongside ‘Propino’
are likely to constitute the majority of
European spring barleys over the next few
years.
