When it comes to growth opportunities for manufacturers of crushing equipment, few regions on the planet can compete with Africa. Last year, analysts at Verified Market Research valued the continent’s mining market at a sizeable $476.86 billion. Even more impressively, the sector is expected to achieve a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.6 percent during the period 2023-30, reaching a staggering $799.66 billion by the end of the decade. Crushers are essential to Africa’s mining sector, but these versatile machines also boast a host of applications in other market segments. From construction and aggregates to agriculture and recycling, these units have become must-have companions for industrial activities across the length and breadth of the continent. With more than three decades of experience in the construction equipment sector, Belgium-headquartered Keestrack is keen to capitalise on growth potential in Africa. Giovanni Bartoli, Area Sales Manager for the Africa and Middle East Region, tells James Morgan: “We are growing and building our dealer network in line with our commitment to continue investing in the African market. While it will take some time to get all our dealers up to speed and confident with our products and unique selling points, we believe there is significant potential in this region. Keestrack is already well recognised and valued for its high-end products, especially in North and West Africa.” Astec Industries’ Africa Middle East regional sales team is certainly optimistic about the continent’s crushing segment. “The past 12 months have demonstrated great success, as evidenced by a significant increase in quote and sales activity across the region,” they explain. “We are continuing to see demand for high-quality crushers in Africa, which is being driven by a need for productivity, reliability and strong aftermarket support. 54 material processing range, which includes our world-class apron feeders and rock-breaking solutions for above- and underground mining applications.” Neeraj Kumar Singh, President – Business Development at Propel Industries, seems equally satisfied with his team’s performance in the region. “We have exceeded expectations, with sales in Africa reaching almost 70 percent of the previous year’s figures within the first six months of fiscal year 2023- 24,” he explains. “The African market has been exceptionally receptive to Propel’s machines, which have consistently delivered high performance and reliability.” Despite broader macroeconomic headwinds, Bartoli notes that requirements for crushers are following an upward trajectory. “We see demand for Keestrack equipment rising every year,” he says. “As we are better represented, our brand becomes more visible. The African market is somewhat hesitant to commit to large investments right now, as is the case in other regions. However, we have new partners on board, and we have some promising projects in the pipeline, so we are optimistic.” Commenting on the sectors currently driving demand for crushing equipment in Africa, Singh identifies quarrying and aggregate as important driving forces. “Due to the immense potential for growth in infrastructure, we have made these segments a prime focus for Propel Industries,” he explains. “More than 100 of our machines are currently active in quarries across the continent. 60 GLOBAL NEWS Metso has extended its manufacturing capacity of mobile trackmounted crushing and screening equipment in Alwar, India, by opening new manufacturing facilities. After the extension is complete, the total size of the Alwar factory is approximately 340,000 square meters, adding 35% more capacity to the factory initially opened in 2008. The Alwar factory has become one of Metso’s biggest manufacturing sites, employing approximately 1,300 people in total. The official opening took place on September 19, 2023, and production ramp-up to reach full capacity will continue until the end of the year. The new factory showcases the most modern manufacturing practices, hosting several sustainability-driven functions like automated warehousing, automated assembly lines, modern painting lines and 13,000 solar panels installed to enable the increased energy production. After the extension, solar energy covers 85% of Alwar’s total power generation, which is maximum permitted as per state government guidelines. ”With the increased manufacturing capacity, Alwar becomes the major Metso site for increased domestic business in India and exports to Metso’s customers globally. Additionally, significant investment has been made in engineering and R&D resources, making it one of our key global engineering hubs,” said Markku Simula, President of the Aggregates business area of Metso. NGM is the single largest gold-producing complex in the world, formed as a joint venture between Barrick and Newmont. An official ground breaking ceremony was held, which signalled the beginning of an €85 million investment. The PACCAR Parts Distribution Center (PDC) will support DAF in further strengthening its market position in Germany. The new 240,000 square foot facility will be situated on a 54 acre site and is expected to open in 2024. The operation is designed to provide a world-class service to the dealer network with shipments and emergency orders delivered within hours. The PDC will have the capacity to store over 80,000 different parts. The Massbach PDC will utilise leading edge technologies and innovations, including voice-directed material handling, the most advanced scanning equipment and automated packaging systems to boost order fulfilment. The LTC 1050-3.1E is equipped with an electric motor in addition to the conventional drive. Crane movements can thus optionally be carried out using electricity. The new variant of the compact Liebherr 50-tonner thus contributes to CO2 reduction and meets the requirements for operation on “zero emission” construction sites. Mammoet highlights the compactness of the LTC 1050-3.1, which offers greater flexibility when taking on jobs in tight locations, especially indoors, where both its zero emissions and noise reduction in electrical operation are particularly important. Mammoet ordered the crane with Liebherr RemoteDrive for these operations. This allows the vehicle to be optimally controlled with remote control with centimetre precision under the tightest conditions. The electric version of the LTC 1050-3.1 offers the best possible combination of environmental compatibility, customer benefits and efficiency. On and off the road, the 50-tonne crane is powered by a conventional and low-emission combustion engine with exhaust emission stage 5, delivering 243kW (326hp). The engine can be fed without restriction with hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO), which already saves up to 90 % of CO2 emissions in operation, compared to pure diesel drive. In crane operation, the combustion engine or electric motor can be flexibly selected depending on the operating conditions. Powered by multiple technological upgrades to deliver industry-leading performance, the self-developed model will meet the construction demands of super scale open pit mines. The XES35 is weighed at nearly 1,100 tons with a height of 18.5 meters, which is the equivalent of a six-story building. www.PlantAndEquipment.com 65 PRODUCT NEWS A unique hybrid truck with a solar panel covered trailer is being tested on public roads, as a result of a two-year research collaboration involving Scania, Uppsala University, Eksjö Maskin & Truck, Midsummer, Ernsts Express, and Dalakraft. The solar energy decreases operational costs and local emissions significantly because of the truck’s self-produced energy. The truck is used in a research project to examine the generated solar energy, and how much carbon emissions decrease via the solar panels. The researchers developed new, efficient, and lightweight solar panels for trucks. The truck’s 18-metre trailer is almost completely covered in solar panels, equivalent to a house equipped with similarly powerful panels. The solar energy gives the hybrid truck a prolonged driving range of up to 5,000km annually in Sweden. The solar powered truck has been developed in a research project party funded by government agency of innovation Vinnova, to develop trucks with low climate impact thanks to solar energy. The truck is a 560 horsepower plug-in hybrid. On the 18-metre trailer, an area of 100 square meters is covered by thin, lightweight and flexible solar panels with a maximum efficiency of 13,2kWp (kilowatt peak).
