AMAZING, GRACEFUL AND POWERFUL ANIMALS. Bukowska
rode as much as she could as a child, took as many lessons as
her parents would allow and competed in as many shows as pos-
sible. Her horse obsession took her to Poland, where she planned
to pursue her career in riding. However, it soon became difficult for
her to do everyday activities, and she was restricted to her bed for
five months. Ultimately, Bukowska was diagnosed with lupus SLE
and fibromyalgia. Today, she is still working with doctors on getting
her health challenges back into remission so she can go back to
spending time at the barn with her horses, training and competing.
At the moment, she pours her passion for horses into her artwork.

“Art is a way for me to express myself and has always been
an important part of my life, but being separated from horses is
what gave me the motivation and ambition to paint my abstract
pieces,” Bukowska explains. “Horses set my heart free on those

picking the pile of browns. “I just had a feeling of what

the result was 'The Untamed,'" she explains. "'The Un-
tamed' is my perspective on the Lusitano, a dauntless
and gallant spirit that is, at the same time, calm and af-
fectionate. I see and feel all of these traits in the eye of
'The Untamed.'"

Bukowska’s future goal as an artist is to exhibit her
work globally. She has already exhibited in California
and Poland and would like to travel across Europe shar-
ing her burning love of horses with other horse lovers
and art enthusiasts. As far as her riding career, she
plans to compete on her Polish Warmblood jumper by
the end of this year. “Some doctors say I’m crazy, but
I say my love of horses keeps me going and keeps me
strong,” Kasia says, “I have always dreamed of owning,
training and breeding young horses, and I’ve never had
more ambition than I do now to make that happen.”

At just 15 years old, Brenna Litynski is the young- (BELOW)
est artist to have her work recognized as a finalist in Brenna Litynski's painting "Pan's Happy Thoughts"
the 2016 IALHA Art Contest. Her submission "Pan’s
Happy Thoughts" was inspired by her love of Andalu-
sians. “I ride at the British Riding School at Kilmarnock
Farm under Joanne McCallum,” Litynski explains, “Our
farm doesn’t have Lusitanos or Andalusians (I ride a
thoroughbred named Winnie). I was trying to find lo-
cal farms for inspiration. I found two in Maryland and
have had the privilege of visiting and painting horses
at Castle Farm in Snow Hill, Md. I found the website
of Spring Fever Farm in Mount Airy, Md., and saw Ms.
Diana Beuchert riding Poderoso and had that ‘Ahhh-
hhhh! (sung opera style) moment!’ After emailing Ms.
Beuchert, I decided to paint Poderoso (aka Pan) be-
cause he looked to me to have a beautiful, thoughtful
soul.”

Litynski first entered the IALHA Art Contest three
years ago, at age 12, and she has been a regular partic-
ipant ever since. “I love IALHA’s Art Contest!” she says.
“It is so exciting to see the people ‘liking’ and com-
menting on the Facebook page. I am truly honored that
my artwork was considered and placed in the top five
and super excited to be highlighted in the magazine!”

According to her mom, Litynski has been an artist
since she put her fingerprints on her birth certificate.
“I started using an etch-a-sketch before I was one,

satility, strength, agility and kindness. Born and bred in the United States by Ran-

very rural, very Northern California location when he joined the Johan-Nass family
in May of 2012. With him, he brought an incredible personality that would touch
many lives. Vendito has allowed his amateur owner Kim Johan-Nass to achieve
dreams she never even knew existed.

Vendito and Johan-Nass participated in their first show at the 2013 Fiesta of
the Spanish Horse. A first for both, they traveled the 630+ miles to the Los Ange-
les Equestrian Center in Burbank, Calif., and haven’t looked back. They showed
Hunt Seat, Dressage Suitability, Show Hack, Western, Trail and Halter at that first
show with great results. They have since added Native Tack in the Doma Vaquera
style and Dressage. Vendito loves the attention he receives at the shows, and
will solicit pats and pets from everyone, while his owner answers questions and

Martland of Alberta, Canada. Monty has been with Martland ever since. Although
their training focuses mostly on dressage, Monty competes in many disciplines
as well as breed demonstrations. Monty is the true definition of versatile, and he
seems to draw people in due to his size and truly quiet demeanor. He tries so hard
to please and loves showing off in front of a crowd, without putting too much en-
ergy into it, of course! Monty can compete in a dressage competition one day and

Royal Horse Farms won both the 2014 and 2015 USEF Breeder of the Year awards as a result of
horses they bred having accumulated more show points than horses bred by any other breeder com-

Every year the IALHA requests a grant from the USEF to be
used toward youth programs and incentives. For the last
two years that grant money has gone towards encouraging
increased youth participation. What does this mean? Well,
thanks to the generosity of USEF, the IALHA is able to offer
youth a FREE MEMBERSHIP to any 18-year-old or under
youth who rides an IALHA registered horse. This gives the
youth access to membership benefits while saving their
family money.

lovely mare. We would love to be able to share
more stories about other active IALHA youth,
so get those memberships, share those photos,
and we will get you recognized.

2016 Youth Show Grant

This year, the grant money that USEF sent the
IALHA was large enough to not only take care
of the youth memberships and saddle pads, but
also to provide a little extra to be used in a differ-
ent way. The money has to be used for youth, so
the IALHA Board decided to use the extra money
to provide a number of IALHA youth members
with a 2016 Youth Show Grant. The goal was to
help make it possible for youth to participate at
local, regional and national IALHA shows by aid-
ing with the financial costs incurred when com-
peting at a show. The amount granted to the
applicants was based on the number of youth
requesting a grant, the cost of the show, stabling
fees and travel costs. Four IALHA youth mem-
bers applied and were awarded grants in 2016.

Kaiyla Phillips and Loris Denton applied for
grants to participate at the Cal-SHO 2016 Re-
gion 1 IALHA Championship Show.

Denton said the grant was a stepping stone to
other opportunities:

"After receiving my grant, I immediately put
it to use at the Cal-SHO Regionals in Ventura,
Calif. The grant paid for about three-fourths of
my show fees and was the greatest help for my
family. While I was there, I won three champion-
ships and one reserve! I was also recognized by
another trainer who asked me to compete for
them at the Andalusian World Cup in September.
