The show week started off with the biggest Dressage
Sport Horse in-hand division ever conducted at our
nationals. About 50 horses were signed up, easily sur-
passing last year’s record of 34 participants. Then, we
had the largest number of horses participating in the
under-saddle classes in recent years. Part of the reason
might have been the presence of USDF Gold Medalist,
Olympic-level judge, Hilda Gurney of California. The
highest Sport Horse in-hand score for all horses went to
Saltador ORO for the second consecutive year, shown by
Ruperto Vasquez for the Henslee Hogan partnership of

with the highest functionality score under our Spanish
Specialty class judge, Antonio Vasquez Fernandez. It is
no wonder he was a hit at WEG last year.

Day 2 featured Specialty Classes with Vazquez Fer-
nandez (himself a dressage rider and a veterinarian)
joined by our esteemed judge from Portugal, Jose
Manuel Correia Lopes. Many of these classes had
more than a half-dozen entries. One highlight was an
unheard-of perfect morphology score of 100 in senior

My grandfather traveled to Australia several times to conduct horsemanship
and safety clinics. His international clinics also included trips to Israel, Costa Rica,
Thailand, Philippines, Spain, Germany and throughout the United States. Art ren-
dered advice on conformation, training techniques, safety measures and the psy-
chology of the horse. He also was an accredited horse show judge (more than 30
years), carded with the Pinto Association, the International Andalusian and Lusi-
tano Horse Association, USEF, Appaloosa, Ponies of America, International Buck-
skin, American Buckskin, United States Equestrian Federation, American
Miniature and Friesians.

In March 2011, he was inducted into the Pinto Horse Association Judges Hall of
Fame in Oklahoma City, where I, along with my family, witnessed this special event
that capped a successful career. Art showed in arena events that include Western,
English, reining, working cow horse, cutting, roping, games, jumping, working hunter
and polo.

In 1975, Art received the honor of having the Hunt Seat World Champion, Sad-
dle Seat World Champion, and High Point World Champion, all on one horse. My
grandfather wrote articles in several horse magazines, such as Horse Illustrated,
Equus, The Australian Quarter Horse, The Horse of Kings, The Los Angeles Times
and Herald Examiner.

He is well noted, particularly, for his seminars on horse psychology and on horse
behavior. One of his many stand-out talents and expertise was in the safety of han-
dling all types of horses. In his life, he had trained 30 celebrities and made three
horse movies. He had provided horses for 18 different commercials and had been a
mounted Marshall in the Rose Parade for 13 consecutive years.

My grandfather always said his greatest achievement was not in what he had
done, but the personal reward and pride of how many people he had helped to
acquire the success they have had in the horse industry. As recently as two months
ago, in Israel, he was lecturing a group of riders and used this very same quote.

Art used to ask people, “What do you want on your tombstone? ‘I wish I had’ or
‘I am glad I did?’” He obviously lived the “I am glad I did” philosophy for his entire
equestrian career. He has touched the lives of many riders, trainers and judges
across all horse breeds throughout the world.

At the end of August 2011, Art passed away following a two-year battle with
cancer. He is survived by his wife, Joyce, his son, Art, his granddaughter, Jessica
Gaytan-Thornburg, and his horse-crazy, great-granddaughter, Jameson Thornburg.

He will be missed not only by me and my family, but also by the many eques-
trians who came to know his charismatic way around people and horses. Many
have asked what they can do to honor his memory, and I respond by reminding
people to live each day so they are “glad they did.”

YEAR END
Awards

Breeder of the Year:

Gremlan Farms – Lanys Kaye-Eddie

Lanys and Graham Kaye-Eddie started Gremlan Farms in 1980, after purchasing their first three
horses in late-1979. “We soon realized that there were not enough choices in California to make
breeding decisions,” says Lanys. “So, in 1982, we undertook a visit to Spain and Portugal. This
resulted in the importation, in 1984, of the fabulous 16.3-hand Romero Benitez stallion, Regalado
II, a son of the legendary Yeguada Militar sire, Leviton.

“This super stallion had a great dressage career, but, unfortunately, died at 10 years old,”
Lanys adds. “Two of six mares also arriving in 1984 were black, and the exotically beautiful
Ladina, from the Escalera line, earned the unanimous IALHA U.S. National Championship Senior
Mare title in 1989, with Vaughan Smith showing her under saddle as well. She was our shining star
and was one of the most exciting and best mares to come to these shores.

“It is an added miracle that, in the year of her death at 26, Ladina’s son, Ladino GF, won
both the IALHA 2010 National Championship and the Foundation for the Pure Spanish Horse
Championship in Las Vegas,” she says. “What a wonderful story this is. Ladino’s current owners,

Allan and Celia Stenfors-Dacre from Wyoming,
are the perfect couple to own and promote
this horse and believe in him in every way. He
has not let them down and is a credit to his
extraordinarily successful dressage sire, Gaucho
III. What a dream breeding that was!”

Another of Ladina’s offspring, Navarre GF,
was purchased in utero by Mike and Connie
Connelly, and they also took that magnificent
stallion to a National Championship, among
numerous other successes.

The primary goal has been to breed athletic
and functional horses, true to the Spanish type,
but particularly for dressage, where possible. It
always has been more of a concern for a horse
to be able to reach his or her own potential
without being forced into a mold that is
unsuitable for that horse.

Lanys offers the following advice for other
breeders: “I can only humbly say that you have
to start with the best possible mares, and breed
them to the best possible stallions. I should
emphasize that a Ladina only comes once in
your lifetime, and I am sure you will recognize
her when she comes your way!”

IALHA Youth of the Year:

Alexandra Crippen

Observant IALHA members may have seen the “design by Panoramic Artistry” notation on a number of advertisements,
posters, brochures and marketing material used in 2010 and 2011. Those who live in Alexandra Crippen’s region also have enjoyed
the benefits of her volunteer service to her local Andalusian club, where she co-edits and produces the quarterly newsletter;
maintains the club’s Facebook page; donated the design for the club’s informational
brochure distributed at horse expos, fairs and shows; and is on hand at almost every event
the club sponsors or participates in, with camera in hand and ready to chronicle happening
every step of the way. This high school student more than embodies the traits of service and
contribution that are essential for non-profits, such as the IALHA, to thrive.

Upon hearing that she had been chosen as 2011 IALHA Youth of the Year, Alexandra
Crippen wrote, “Excited and humbled are just two of the words I would use to describe how I
feel about being selected as Youth of the Year 2011 by the IALHA. I have been a member of
the IALHA since 2005, and my interest in the Andalusian breed started with the ownership of
my horse and best friend, Anteri.

“My natural passion for photography merged with my obsession with horses and created
a whole new world for me to pursue,” she says. “I started out with a very cheap digital
camera that was just enough to introduce me to photography. I offered a free grooming
service for horses at my barn, where I greatly appreciated tips to help pay for a new camera.
What started out as a hobby soon became a small source of income, when I started
photographing horses I groomed.

“Today, I pride myself on producing high-quality work with an attention to detail and at an
affordable price for all types of owners,” Alexandra continues. “I also am the founder and
assistant director for a non-profit shelter specializing in domestic rabbits,
www.redbarnrabbitrescue.org. I plan to continue my photography and graphic design either
as a career or a supplemental source of income. To some, this sounds like a lot of work, but it
is worth every moment. I love where I am and the path I am taking, and I would never
change it, just like I would never change the perfection of the Iberian horse.”

2011 Volunteer of the Year:

Nancy Holman

I have been in love with the Andalusian and Lusitano horses for years. As a child, I had horse and unicorn
pictures on the wall. Most of them looked like our horses. In 1996 my friend,
Lisa Diersen, encouraged a group of us to fly with her to New York. There,
we enjoyed the production of “Zingaro,” given by French equine trainer
and artist, Bartabas. From that day, on, I only chose to work with instructors
and trainers who developed the relationship of equine and equestrian into
a living art partnership. This relationship is much easier to pursue when you
choose an equine partner, such as Andalusians and Lusitanos, bred for
centuries for that purpose.

As a breeder of Lusitano horses, the IALHA has provided us a platform to
show our breeding, and many friends with whom to share the joy. This
summer, our Lusitano stallion, Urano VO, won a championship on a
Thursday, only to have a good friend’s Andalusian stallion, Xiomaro BR, take
the regional championship the next day. We all have fun, and we all cheer
each other on. We missed the presence of another great IALHA stallion at
that show, Heroe MAC, as he was recovering from an illness. And what did
his owners do? John and Karen Rock gave a big trophy for the regional
show in his name.

The IALHA is a team of people. Every year, some of the IALHA team
members volunteer to gift their time and talents. Together, we help to
improve and expand the experience of enjoying our breeds. IALHA had
many volunteers this year, and I thank IALHA for the opportunity to be one
of them. Together, we made it happen.

2011 YEAR END AWARDS

Amateur Horsewoman of the Year:

Amanda Latta-Shields

A long-time member of the IALHA family, Amanda has shined as an ambassador for the breed since she was a young child. “In
1986 I was given the opportunity to ride my first Andalusain, Destinado V, owned by Penny Burley,” she says. “Little did anyone
know then that my love for the breed and for horses was just starting. Dusty and I were the same age, both the ripe age of 7, and
he carried me for years in the practice ring and in the show ring. He taught me
balance and confidence, which was what I needed as a novice rider. Just this
past week, I got my invitation to Dusty’s 30 birthday party this November, and I am
excited my new daughter Addison (born Sept. 7, 2011) will get to meet the horse
responsible for starting the last 25 years of my riding career.

“There are so many proud moments related to Andalusians, from riding in the
Tournament of Roses Parade, exhibitions, championships and various honors,”
Amanda continues. “Each of the horses in our show string carries a special place
in my heart. Each one has carried me to various national championships
(sometimes year after year), and each one has their own special personality that
makes them part of our family. The relationships with our horses are built on trust
and respect for one another. Each horse has also taught me their own special life
lesson. It’s the life lessons and memories that are the moments that I cherish.

“As an amateur horsewoman, the traits of the Andalusian that I find most
compelling are their temperament, natural talent and versatility,” she adds. “The
combination of these three traits is what make the Andalusian stand out above
the rest. Their temperament of being people pleasers makes learning new things
happen so quickly. Yet, their independence makes them unique to other breeds
and still leaves room for the ‘show off’ in them. Their natural talent physically
enables them to be versatile and, in my experience, that is why we can take our
western horse in a saddle seat class, then a dressage class, followed by a hunt
seat class. The Andalusian horse is unlike any other breed, and that is why I’ve
dedicated the last 25 years of my life to riding these wonderful animals.”

Amateur Horseman of the Year:

John Rock

John Rock and his wife, Karen, operate Jay Stables in Big Rock, Ill., where they proudly stand Heroe MAC and maintain
a small, high-quality band of broodmares. John was first introduced to the Andalusian breed when he met Karen in the fall
2004.

“She had been involved in Andalusians for over 20 years and was quick to share the attributes of the breed,” John
explains. “For the first couple of years, I contributed by driving the truck/trailer and grooming. While I enjoyed watching our
horses compete, I felt the urge to get in the ring myself. After a few in-hand lessons with Mario Contreras, I found myself in
the ring for the first time in 2008 at Nationals with our Stallion Heroe MAC. I was hooked.”

John also really enjoys his time in the show ring with the horses. He reflects on that experience. “To compete and be
recognized by fellow competitors – many of whom have years and years of experience in the breed and in the show ring

– makes me proud. It reinforces that the work we do with
our horses is recognized. It’s great to leave the ring with a
blue ribbon, but it’s even better to leave, with whatever
color ribbon, and have a group of folks follow you to your
stall to ask about your horse.”

Of course, like many members, John has a special
bond with the horses he and his wife raise. “While I love to
compete and win in the show ring, I receive the most
enjoyment from breeding and raising great foals,” he says.
“Our foals make me very proud. They bring happiness to
our boarders and visitors. I think it is very telling that our
vets always schedule their visits to our farm as the last stop
of the day, so they can stay after to play with and ride our
horses. Two of them have even purchased horses from us.”

John is quick to praise the Andalusian. “While there are
many great breeds of horses, I constantly thank Karen for
choosing this breed,” he says. “The breed is beautiful, yet
very masculine. Their willingness to please makes them a
great breed for the amateur. They are extremely athletic
and very versatile. Just look at the classes we offer at the
breed shows. They can do just about anything.”

Victoria of Fox Run

Nothing about Victoria of Fox Run’s life could ever be considered ordinary, from her conception by Pony Express to her life at the
Kentucky Horse Park.

In the pre-Fed Ex Saturday delivery days, Piper came into heat on Memorial Day Weekend, and we were anxious to get
started. The Hamids agreed to a one-time-only assist to get her bred that weekend. Allan had his vet in southern Connecticut
collect Embajador IX, and he transported the Equitainer to his wife, Linda.

I received this message: “I have the goods, meet me at the Candy Factory in Sturbridge in two hours.” I called in “sick family”
at work (they are our kids after all). “Big Blue” was transferred to me, and I called my husband in Maine and arranged to meet him
in Portland in a couple of hours. We pulled into the Ground Round almost simultaneously, I handed him the cargo, we had lunch,
and off he went. A call to the vet to meet him in a few more hours sealed the deal. It was a long and lonely ride back home.

Eleven months later, on May 4, 1993, Piper decided to
stand up and deliver her foal despite my husband’s
insistence that they must lie down. Piper shot that filly out
like a rocket into our arms, and we all ended up in a pile
on the stall floor. Who imprinted whom is still a mystery, but
Tori and I have been soul mates ever since.

Tori always has been anxious to learn more and do
anything asked of her. We’ve had a great journey
together, but she really loves the Kentucky Horse Park,
where she can play dress up and strut her stuff. Sometimes
you just have to allow them to do what they love, sharing
your best horse with the world, instead of being selfish. She
can pick out my diesel from the thousands that drive by
her paddock and runs to see me. That makes it all
worthwhile.

I’m so happy that my horse was chosen for this honor.
Our accomplishments alone do not make life worthwhile,
but, when those we love and who love us unconditionally
are recognized as special, it makes your heart sing.

Saltador ORO

For his entire show career, Saltador ORO has been a dominant force in the show ring at widely different venues. He holds eight
national titles and many regional championships in different categories, including: dressage, sport horse in hand,
performance, costume and halter. Recognition has come from USDF, USEF and international judges from both Spain and
Mexico. He has achieved regional and national titles as a PRE Absolute Champion stallion and Functionality Champion.

Saltador has amassed an amazing 70 championships, reserve championships, Gold Medal Movement and Best Movement
awards from 2004, to date. He has been awarded Best Movement of Show 17 times, including the 2010 IALHA National show. He
received the highest score for Dressage Sport Horse in Hand among all 34 horses competing in that
division at the 2010 National Show, and tied for the highest score among 25 sport horses competing
at the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show in 2010. He was purebred Versatility Champion at the 2010
Nationals, taking five national titles and three reserve national titles, competing in six categories.

Outside of our breed shows, Saltador has racked up about 20 first place wins in USDF shows
(training to second level) and was USDF Reserve Champion at training level nationally in 2006. He is
consistently in the top standings for USEF awards. In 2009, 2010 and 2011, year to date, Saltador has
accumulated well above the minimum number of points required for the IALHA Life Merit Award, El
Premio de Oro.

In recent years, Saltador ORO has sired about 50 offspring and consistently passes on his
outstanding movement, conformation and temperament. Most are still young, but the few shown, to
date, have done well. He has been donated to multiple stallion auctions. Saltador is gentle enough
to be shown at halter and ridden by amateurs. He always attracts a crowd at shows and is an
excellent ambassador for the breed: beautiful, strong, sound and sane.

He was recently named USDF Grand Champion Sport Horse at the Southern Series Sport Horse
Breeders open show and represented our breed at the Bluebonnet Horse Rescue Expo, raising
money for neglected and abused horses, as well as those displaced by Texas wildfires. Owners,
Walter and Judy Henslee and Gina Rae Hogan, would like to thank all the trainers and exhibitors that
have played a key role in Saltador’s success: Ruperto Vasquez, Michael Vermaas, Nancy Smith, Iiane
Lorenz and Natalie Katalenas.

2011 YEAR END AWARDS

Professional Horsewoman of the Year:

Sarah Kress

Sarah Kress “earned her white gloves and top hat” as a youth rider competing in USDF competitions and has been making her
living as a professional horsewoman for years. In addition to training dressage horses, she owns and operates a full-service
boarding stable (EsKay Equestrians Inc.) in her hometown of Eugene, Ore., and,
somehow, manages to find time to give about 15 lessons per week.

Sarah has immersed herself in the breed. She has participated in breed expos
with her regional club, shown in IALHA shows both in Oregon and British Columbia,
and competes with her Andalusian mare on the open dressage circuit. In
addition, several of Sarah’s clients have become interested in the breed, as they
have seen how much she gets out of her mare Izarra GHF, and have gotten to
know the half-Andalusian gelding her fiancé owns and the newest member of her
Andalusian family, RA Karysma.

“There have been so many proud moments and memories along this three-
year journey of having Andalusians in my life, it is hard to name just a few,” Sarah
says. “I would have to say one would be the day I saw Izarra. Another would be
when we showed our first dressage show season together. We scored a 78.6
percent at one of our shows. This year at the Canadian Nationals, Izarra and I
were honored with the national titles for both Dressage Suitability and Training
Level Dressage. Of course, being able to qualify for the Oregon Dressage State
Championships was a great honor as well. One more great memory would be
watching our 3-year-old Half-Andalusian grow up from a weanling. But, mostly, the
courage and strength of these wonderful horses amaze me every day. I am so
blessed to have them in my life.”

“When I get asked about Andalsians,” Sarah continues, “I tell them that
Andalusians are smart, loyal and loving horses. Also, they want to be with their
human companions. Their trainability is amazing and to keep up with them can be
challenging, but in a good way. The statement that the Andalusian will change
your life rings so true!”

Professional Horseman of the Year:

Mario A. Contreras

Mario A. Contreras has been a wonderful friend to our breed for many years. He promotes Andalusians on a daily basis with the
Medieval Times venues around the country. Each year, thousands of people fall in love with the magnificent steeds of war from a

bygone era his shows promote. His ability to bring out the best in the horses with which he works
is admired by professionals and amateurs alike.

Dedicated to promoting the IALHA as well as the breed of horses he admires so much,
Mario was an important part of the 2010 World Equestrian Games, expending many hours and
his own funds to be a part of the program. His opening night exhibition performance at the
WEG was one of the highlights of the event: an incredible display of elegance and training.

Mario’s activities are not limited to Medieval Times and high-profile exhibition
performances, however. He regularly shares his expertise with others at the Illinois Horse Fair and
local clinics and is a popular participant in parades. Earlier this year, Mario donated his time to
MC the Preliminariate clinic in the Chicago area, organized by another one of our members as
a way to provide a hands-on workshop for Spanish-speaking handlers hoping to learn how to
present their horses in halter classes. An overarching goal of the Preliminariate event was to
encourage more diverse participation in the halter classes at the IALHA National
Championships as well as regional USEF shows for Andalusians and Lusitanos. At the event,
Mario provided individualized instruction to each participant in Spanish, an incredible service
to the organization and its members.

More recently, Mario volunteered to MC the Youth Party that took place at the 2011
National Championship show as well as to perform in the Saturday night extravaganza.

A skilled horseman and incredible showman, Mario truly embodies what it means to be an
ambassador for the breed and the IALHA.

Dressage in the Wine Country

IBERIAN HORSES AND RIDERS CAPTIVATE WINE COUNTRY CROWD WITH QUADRILLE

PHOTOS COURTESY OF JAK WONDERLY

Allison Mathy of Lyric Dressage in Petaluma, Calif.,
organized and led an Iberian Horse Quadrille for the
Sonoma California Dressage Society chapter’s popular
fundraiser: Dressage in the Wine Country. The event was
held Sept. 17 at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa
Rosa, Calif.

Mathy was aboard her Lusitano stallion, Vaquarius.
Joining her in the quadrille were Carolyn Carroll (Mathy’s
mother) on the renowned Lusitano stallion, Quarteto do
Top; Lorna Goode on her PRE stallion, Jaleo; and Jean-
nette Deramalaere on her Lusitano stallion, Uh-La-La.

The riders wore traditional native attire and rode to the
music of Vivaldi, Handel, and Pulp Fiction.

stallion Vaquarius Carolyn Carroll, with their Lusitano stallions

A beautiful fall sunset provided a magnificent www.ialha.org
backdrop for the quadrille riders. From left:

First Trail Ride

PHOTOS COURTESY OF SHANNON EVERSON

Life is full of ‘first’ times … and that goes for
horses too! Equestrians know a horse’s first time out on
the trail can be a fun adventure or a, well, not so fun
adventure. Luckily, our Iberian horse breeds seem to
love the great outdoors and the wonders of nature.
Shannon Everson of Prairie Falcon Ranch in Aurora, Ore-
gon shared these carefree photos with Andalusian Mag-
azine of her IALHA Andalusian mare Dibujada on her

first ever trail ride at
Mission State Park
near Salem, Oregon.
“This is her first trail
ride in her 8 years of life,” writes Shannon. “She loved the Willamette River
and a gallop through the fields whispering with Scotch Broom!”
