The IALHA National Championship and Foundation Celebration was
exuberantly attended at the Will Rogers Coliseum in Ft. Worth, Texas,
in October 2012. The combined effort drew more than 150 horses from
far and wide. Classes ran smoothly, and the atmosphere was invigo-
rated by the increase in patrons and vendors during recent years. The
show brought out the best in the attendees, organizers and volun-
teers who seemed to be living on adrenalin at times.

By the time I arrived on Friday morn-

grounds and stabling. It was a welcomed

horses from all of the Americas. I met

breed enthusiasts from Nova Scotia to

Nuevo Laredo, from Oregon to Ohio, and

from Brazil to British Columbia.

Each chance meeting validated the

scope and breadth of the show’s draw. My

experiences also included some leg work

to chip in, and volunteering at this partic-

truly successful silent auction, composed
of a vast array of goods and services,
came to a close Saturday afternoon with
genuine gratitude to all who donated
and bid.

An industrious calm settled over the
arena as the organizers and participants
prepared themselves for the annual
Saturday night Extravaganza. It was
great to see multi-generational families
of spectators in attendance for the
Extravaganza. Riz Ilyas with Daniel
Garcia oversaw the delivery of a truly
dazzling series of performances, which
included side-saddle precision riding;
dare-devil riders; and beautiful exhibi-
tions of baroque horsemanship, bull-
fighting responsiveness and classical
dressage.

Other crowd-pleasing acts included a
bridleless scuba diver ride, a romantic fla-
menco-caballero dance and a captivating-
ly graceful garocha exhibition. A long-lin-
ing stallion thrilled the crowd with airs
above the ground, and a tiny pony execut-
ed a Spanish walk, practically stealing the
show. Indeed, when all the participants of
the Extravaganza returned to the arena
for encore applause, it was frankly the
end of a heartwarming week. Q AM

Sol Dos Pinhais

Sol Dos Pinhais: “Sol” is a very special horse. He is brave and sweet, but has plenty of energy to get the job done. He has
shown successfully thru Intermediare 2, and is ready to make his Grand Prix debut. Earn your USDF gold medal in style!
He has excellent piaffe and passage, elastic lateral work and expressive flying changes. Sol’s a gentleman and would be
suitable for an adult amateur, Jr/YR or a professional interested in Grand Prix. Sol has no soundness or health issues. He
travels well & is the same horse away from home as he is at the farm. He loves going out on hacks in the field and on the
hills. He can be ridden in a snaffle or double bridle and is easy to sit.

Lovely, experienced 1999 FEI Lusitano gelding by Lambada offered FOR SALE

Jennifer Coyle Johnson

Horses have long been a big part of Jennifer Coyle Johnson’s life. As a young
girl growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, Johnson competed in dressage, hunters,
jumpers and eventing. Her first horse of her own, the Andalusian gelding Del-
More’s Recluta III (aka Rex), was bred by her Aunt Carolyn – one of the first
Andalusian breeders in the United States. Johnson was 6 years old when Rex
came into her life as an awkward weanling, and she's been rolling with the
breed ever since.

Johnson went to her first Andalusian show in 1988 at age 10 in Findlay, Ohio
– where she later went to college – and continues to support breed shows
almost 25 years later. After college, Johnson started JC Andalusians to follow
her dream of being the second generation of Andalusian breeders in the
United States. More than a decade later, the dream continues at her farm in
Virginia. With the help of her husband, Minnesota native Ben Johnson, JC
Andalusians stands multiple stallions and has several brood mares as the foun-
dation of their farm.

Johnson is active in the driving community and, currently, competes her homebred mare, JC Viva, across the East Coast in
combined driving events. She now is taking client horses into the show ring in harness, and continues to be one of the leading
trainers of young horses both within and outside of the breed. Her passion is for the foals and young horses, and she is well known
for her skills with them.

By competing in open dressage, DSHB, eventing, show jumping, hunter/jumper, and combined driving events, Johnson and
JC Andalusians have brought the breed success and recognition in a variety of venues. She has also worked to promote
Andalusians and Lusitanos at horse expos and trade shows. She has a goal of having JC Andalusian horses competing in all of
the FEI disciplines.

In our breed organizations, Johnson has served on the IALHA Ethics committee, USEF Andalusian/Lusitano committee, and on
the Board of Directors and show committee of the Eastern Region Andalusian Horse Club.

Professional Horseman of the Year:

Joey Perez

This year, the IALHA is proud to recognize Joey Perez of The Art of Riding training facility in Silver Springs, Fla., as
Professional Horseman of the Year.

“I started training different breeds when I was 18 years old,” Perez says, “but my passion is and will always be
Iberian horses. I was determined every year of my life to become a better trainer and one for Iberian breeds. One

day, luck came my way as I was offered a trainer position at a
P.R.E. breeding farm.”

There, Perez continued to hone his skills as he focused on
learning the foundations of classical dressage with the help of
master trainers. When the opportunities presented themselves,
Perez also showed the magnificent horses he was working with
in IALHA breed shows, where he was a successful competitor.

Now, Perez and his wife, Ruth, (2010 IALHA Professional
Horsewoman of the Year) continue to live their dreams and
follow their mutual passion for Iberian horses and traditional
horsemanship at the Iberian training facility that they own
together, The Art of Riding, where they specialize in dressage
and doma vaquera.

“We work together, and it has been a dream come true for
both of us,” Perez says. “I want to give a big thank you to all
our past and present clients and the IALHA for this honor.”

Joey Perez, the honor is ours. Thank you for being such a
great and long-term ambassador for the breed and the IALHA.

Chelsea Reed

The recipient of the 2012 IALHA Youth of the Year Award is Chelsea Reed of Groveland, Fla. “Thank you so much for naming me
IALHA Youth of the Year,” Reed says. “I am very honored to receive this title.”

Reed literally has spent her life on horseback and comes by her riding ability honestly. Her father, Tom Reed, has been the
head trainer for Medieval Times (currently located in Kissimmee, Fla.) for many years, and her mother, Megan, runs their training
and breeding business, Lost Art Training Centre.

Reed has long been her parents’ No. 1 assistant. Under
their tutelage (and later that of Olympian Lendon Gray), her
riding skills have increased during the years. Now, at 16, she
assists her parents in breaking the young horses at their farm
in Groveland as well as assisting with the ongoing sessions for
horses in training.

Reed and the Qualified P.R.E. Stallion, Kabileño XV, are
"best friends" and have shown their way to several USDF All
Breeds Awards, last year winning the USDF Region 3
Championship for Third Level, Test 3 (JR/YR).

Spending her summers as a working student for Hampton
Green Farm in Fruitport, Mich., and for Lendon Gray, Reed
has participated successfully in the prestigious D4K (Dressage
for Kids) Horse Show in New York. In the fall of 2012, she and
Kabileno lived and worked at the Hampton Green Farm
facility in Wellington, Fla., studying with Lendon Gray and
Robert Dover. She, of course, rode her favorite breed.

“I love the Andalusian, because they are very willing and
hard-working horses that always want to please,” she says.

2012 Volunteer of the Year:

Sherry Mohr

From her early years as a Region 6 Director to her more recent roles as
IALHA treasurer, PSL Commission president, chair of the Finance and
Fundraising Committee, and member of the Elections, Stallion Breeding
Service Auction, and Marketing committees, Sherry Mohr is one volunteer
who throws her heart into all that she does. Those lucky enough to have
met her in person are probably smiling about now, as they reflect on this
dynamo and all she has brought to the IALHA.

Horses were an important part of Mohr’s early life. “I was born and
raised on a dairy farm in the Catskill Mountains of New York, and our only
form of entertainment after work was completed was our ponies, and then
horses,” Mohr says. Like so many, Mohr’s horse life was interrupted as she
completed her formal education.

“When I went off to college I had to sell my best friend, a Spanish-type
buckskin mare named Tesoro,” she says. “After a hiatus of 12 years,
working as a nurse and starting a family, and then co-owner of a
corporation, my search was on for the perfect partner. I’ve owned everything from mini stud colts to
Tennessee Walkers, Morgans, Thoroughbreds, Friesians, and Quarter Horses, but they just didn’t fulfill my
dream.

“Quite by accident, while searching eBay and winning a bid on a breeding to an Andalusian, my
dreams renewed,” Mohr continues. “As luck would have it, I had my first Half-Andalusian foal. I absolutely
fell in love with the breed, and was lucky enough to meet a lady from Scotland who needed a mare
foaled out. This became my first purebred. From that moment, on, I have cherished the Andalusian and
Lusitano, and I love researching the lineage and history. When you read, ‘What dreams are made of,’
well, they truly are.”

Mohr describes herself as a proud mom to three wonderful boys and married to a hard-working man,
Alfred. “Alfred is an avid dreamer, learner and goal seeker!”

Those of us who know Mohr will not be surprised by her closing remarks: “I love sharing this beautiful
breed and enjoy meeting new enthusiastic IALHA members. A big thank you to all who have enriched my
life. Set your goals high, then set them even higher, and volunteer to help IALHA be the best it can be. I've
never regretted getting involved and meeting so many wonderful people who cherish the Andalusian
and Lusitano as I do.”

Sherry Mohr, from all of the IALHA members the world over whom you have helped along the way, a
hearty thank you and congratulations on being named the 2012 IALHA Volunteer of the Year.

YEAR END AWARDS Photo © Henry Conroy

Amateur Horsewoman of the Year:

Tiana Ng Hornickel

If you’ve been on Facebook or at the IALHA Nationals in recent years, chances are you
instantly recognize this year’s Amateur Horsewoman of the Year, Tiana Ng Hornickle. You
might be surprised to hear that she was not born into the horse world, no matter how much
she may look like she grew up on the back of a fantasy steed.

Ng Hornickel explains that she never dreamed of being involved with horses when she
was a child, “Growing up in the city of Hong Kong, I would have never foreseen owning a
horse in my future, let alone owing horses from such a magnificent breed such as the
Andalusian,” she says. “The first Andalusian I had ever ridden was Eclipse, a stallion owned
by Carlos Macias.”

Ng Hornickel met Eclipse and his owner when she was a working student for Mario
Contreras. She smiles at the memory, “You know how people describe a king’s noble steed
that is ready for your command to charge into battle? That’s how I felt when I was aboard Eclipse. He has the grace of a dance
partner and the heart of a faithful knight, and he taught me how a rider and a horse can melt into one so effortlessly. Needless
to say, I was ‘hooked’ on the breed! I was fortunate enough to compete with Eclipse from time to time, so I got my first taste of
success in the show ring and understood what the breed had to offer.”

In 2008, Ng Hornickel met the horse that she says changed her life. “I set my eyes on Xiomaro for the first time at the Midwest
Horse Fair,” she says. “I still remember the exact moment I fell in love. This pure white, extremely tall stallion steps out of his stall,
rebelliously flips around his long mane, commanding everyone’s attention. I remember I was thinking to myself, ‘I didn’t know uni-
corns existed!’ We were overjoyed when Xiomaro’s previous owner decided to sell him in 2009, and we were given the chance
to own and love this magnificent stallion.”

Since then, Xiomaro has taken Ng Hornickel and all connected with her on an exciting journey in the horse world. Xiomaro
performed in the World Equestrian Games opening ceremony in 2010. In 2011, he was USEF Andalusian Horse of the Year. Ng
Hornickel and Xiomaro attend dressage shows, regional and national breed shows, charity events, parades and horse fairs. More
recently, Ng Hornickel began running a small breeding operation at home.

“One thing I really enjoyed and never thought I would is raising foals,” says Ng Hornickel. “Andalusian foals are extremely
agile and intelligent. I truly enjoy training and playing with them. Of course, all the winnings from shows they bring us are just
pleasant surprise! There’s nothing better than showing off what you love and get rewarded by doing it. I’m very honored to have
received this award, and I hope I can represent the breed in the best light for years to come.”

Amateur Horseman of the Year:

Henry Conroy

This year’s Amateur Horseman of the Year brings with him a distinctly international flair.
Henry Conroy and his wife, Sheree, own and run Glen Lomond Performance horses in Queensland, Australia. They

own both an Andalusian stallion, Harmony Hills Ernesto (Ernie), and GL Conquistador, a buckskin Lusitano colt that they
bred.

Conroy was first introduced to horses by Sheree in 2002, when he moved from Scotland to Australia. He began riding
at age 40, and was immediately enraptured with the partnership that develops between man and horse. Originally, they
bred Quarter Horses, but this changed in 2008, with the purchase of a 3-year-old Andalusian colt. He was shown by
Conroy soon after and won the Led State Championship. He has continued as Supreme Led Stallion as well as the High
Point Horse of the Show in the most recent AHAA Queensland Championships.

“When I first started handling an Andalusian, the change from other horses was dramatic,” says Conroy. “I was
hooked! Even as a young stallion, Ernie showed the endearing traits of an Andalusian. He was intelligent, inquisitive, a
show off and had a desire to please.”

In 2010, Conroy and his wife took the opportunity to travel from Australia to attend the IALHA National show, and were
invited to take part in several events. “It was an amazing experience to participate at these shows, to meet so many
wonderful, friendly people, and to see so many top-quality horses and riders,” Conroy says. “As part of our visit, we spent

some time at the FHD Training Stables under the guidance of two amazing and
accomplished horsewomen, Malen Dell and Francine Dismukes. Here, we had
the unequaled pleasure of riding and working with superbly trained and gifted
Andalusian horses.

“It was an undreamed of experience and absolute privilege to partner some
stunning Andalusian horses at these events,” he continues. “I am humbled by my
success and attribute it more to the wonderfully trained horses than to my own
input.”

Conroy and his wife enjoyed their time at the 2010 Nationals so much that they
returned to the United States in 2011, where their friendliness, commitment to the
breed, and consistently solid handling made a large impression on all who met
them. The IALHA would like to congratulate Henry Conroy on being named 2012
IALHA Amateur Horseman of the Year.

Photo © Dawn Griggs Breeder of the Year:

Gloriosa Farms

The IALHA is delighted to name Gloriosa Farms in Celina, Texas, the 2012 Breeder of the Year.
“It was a surprise to be named the 2012 Breeder of the Year, especially since Gloriosa Farms is a small breeding

operation (producing only two to four foals per year),” says owner Dawn Griggs.
Gloriosa Farms began involvement with the Andalusian in 1991, with the purchase of two purebred yearling fillies.

The farm’s first foal crop arrived in 1994.
“Over the years, we have actively promoted IALHA and horses of both PRE and PSP bloodlines, and attended

regional horse expos and dressage shows. Chasing points was never important to us, although some of our horses did
become National Champions (halter or performance),” Griggs says. “We have been active supporters of the National
Show since 1992 through our participation and more recently by our patronage.”

During the last decade, Gloriosa Farms furthered involvement in the association by holding elected positions as
well as volunteering for committees.

Griggs discussed her farm’s breeding philosophy. “Throughout the years, we’ve continually strived to produce
athletic, functional horses that still retain traditional form and
temperament,” she says.
This approach appears to be working well. Four horses bred by
Gloriosa Farms have garnered significant attention as exhibition
performers: two with Medieval Times, another in Big Apple Circus (New
York), with the most famous being Acierto G, officially recognized as an
Ambassador for IALHA, whose accomplishments with owner/trainer
Laura Amandis are too long to list.
“One of the most gratifying accomplishments has been seeing
horses we’ve bred grow up to do well in USDF shows, especially in the
competitive North Eastern region,” says Griggs, reflecting on the farm’s
20 years of breeding. “We are humbled to be chosen recipient of this
award.”

YEAR END AWARDS Photo © Elise Genest

Purebred Horse of the Year:

Fantasia del C

Fantasia del C, IALHA 12456(S) bred by Barbara Currie of Oak Hill P.R.E., is
owned and loved by Sarah C. Shechner of Origin P.R.E. Sire – Revoltoso
XIV, P.R.E. imported from Spain and sire of conformation and movement
champions. Dam – Gozosa II, imported from Spain, P.R.E. Celebration
National Champion, Certified in the Book of Merits.

Fantasia is one of those rare beauties that simply takes your breath
away. At 16.2 hands, she is a commanding figure in the show ring, but
only when she begins to move does your heart falter a beat within your
chest. At the end of a lead in the arena, she quite simply floats on air.
Her stunning conformation and pearly white coat certainly don’t hurt
the overall picture.

Fantasia truly has been a force to be reckoned with in the show ring,
amassing an incredible number of titles since her birth in 2004. As a year-
ling, she won her first gold medal and best movement title at the P.R.E.
National Championships, but it wasn’t until age 4 (2008) that she truly came into her own as a mature mare and earned her first National
Champion P.R.E. Mare title against much older and more experienced mares.

In 2011, with Howard Peet as her handler, Fantasia won the Champion Mare title at the IALHA Fiesta of the Spanish Horse in Burbank,
Calif. At Celebration, the P.R.E. National Championships in Las Vegas, Fantasia took home the coveted National Champion Mare title for
the second time and best movement in her class under the Spanish judges. Fantasia also won a special award for having the highest
morphology score of any horse at the show. Additionally, Fantasia was presented to three Cria Caballar judges in hand and under sad-
dle, and earned the status of “Qualified” under the stringent guidelines of the P.R.E. Mundial Registry.

At the 2011 IALHA Nationals, Fantasia was named Reserve National Champion Andalusian Dressage Sport Horse Breeding Mare and
Reserve National Champion Andalusian in Dressage at Training Level. In the Spanish Specialty division under a Spanish judge, Fantasia
won her class and best movement, earning the highest morphology score among all horses entered in the Specialty division.

Fantasia narrowly missed the IALHA Champion Sr. Mare title under the American judges, coming home with the Reserve Champion
IALHA Sr. Mare title instead. Perhaps she was simply a bit too tired to take home the top award that day, but, as a result of competing in
multiple categories, Fantasia took home the Reserve National Champion of Versatility Award.

The final day of showing in Texas was a separate ANCCE-sanctioned morphology show, where Fantasia was, again, best in her class
for movement and morphology. Fantasia went on to win the Champion Mare title and had the highest morphology score. Under the
Spanish judges in 2011, Fantasia earned the honor of having the highest morphology score every time she was shown.

Her meteoric rise in the show ring and her high standing in the Book of Merits certainly are imposing. But what makes Fantasia truly
special is her character. Fantasia loves her people, and is equally excited to snuggle up to new friends. She loves to go for walks around
the barn aisles, and stop and meet new people. She’s great on the trails, and never shies away from a new adventure. She also is an
incredible ambassador for the Andalusian and P.R.E. and always helps to convert new breed enthusiasts wherever she goes.

Half-Andalusian Horse of the Year: Photo © Mary Phelps Photography

Karat CF

This year, Karat CF has been recognized as the 2012 Half-Andalusian of
the Year. Karat CF is a 16.0-hand, 5-year-old Andalusian/KWPN cross
gelding by P.R.E. stallion LePanto I (Genil) out of a KWPN Keur Preferent
mare, Kourante (Olympic Ferro). Karat CF was bred by CF Andalusians,
Shawna Camphaug and Shannon Sluser in Canada.

Karat CF holds the incredible distinction of having been invited to
the Markel/USEF National Young Horse Championships to compete as
one of 15 5-year-old dressage horses from across the United States. The
Markel/USEF Young Horse Dressage Program for 4-, 5-, and 6-year-old
horses promotes the importance of selective breeding and correct
training of horses in the United States, and encourages participation of
breeders, riders and trainers of young horses in dressage competition.

The purposes of this program are to encourage the properly struc-
tured development of young dressage prospects through the train-
ing scale, to identify and recognize outstanding talent and the train-
ing of international-caliber horses, and to prepare these horses for
future careers at the FEI level and participation on U.S. High Performance teams.

Only 15 horses are invited nationally in each age group, and Karat CF, ridden and trained by Petra Warlimont of
Longmont, Colo., and owned by Dianne Stanley of Billings, Mont., competed in August at Lamplight Equestrian Center in
Wayne, Ill.

During the 2012 show season, Karat CF competed at USEF Licensed Competitions at First Level in the Open Dressage
Division in the Denver area, earning the highest dressage score in every class in which he competed. He qualified for the
USDF Regional Championships in his first two dressage tests and was the High Point Lower Level Dressage Horse at Autumn
Hill Dressage I, Autumn Hill Dressage III, Dressage at the Peak, Rocky Mountain Dressage I and Rocky Mountain Dressage
II. He has been highly trainable, consistently sound, willing and happy, and is easy for an adult amateur to ride.

Look for this fine, young Half-Andalusian to continue to serve as a wonderful ambassador for the breed for years to come!

Tributes

Indiano XVIII

By Lanys Kaye-Eddie

Very sadly, this year a magnificent Spanish horse, INDIANO XVIII, died
at the age of 27 after a productive life. He was bred by don Joaquin
Conesa, whose farm is Nobleza del Guadiana. Don Joaquin showed
this horse with great success in Spain, winning morphological prizes as
well as functionality.

INDIANO won six gold medals as champion of the breed and, on
two occasions, was Supreme Champion of Functionality. At one point,
more than 60 percent of imported mare bands from this extraordinary
farm were daughters of this iconic stallion. He represented Romero
Benitez blood and, through that, heavily represented “Bocado” blood,
which is probably why he bred so true.

When we heard he was in Mexico on the farm of Federico Jimenez
Sainz, a number of friends travelled there to see him in April 1994. Besides
his extraordinary physical beauty and proud bearing, we were treated
to seeing him move in the arena and were thrilled with the sight.

However, we asked Vaughn Smith to have fun with the stallion outside the arena in the fields and, suddenly, the movement was so
extraordinary that none of us could really believe it. This horse had an elasticity of the shoulder, and reach in the rear was almost unbelievable. We
still have the tape of those incredibly magic moments. His fire resulted in the nickname “The Lion of Spain.”

Eventually, we managed to put together a syndicate to acquire this stallion, and he arrived in our country in 1997. After a heavy breeding
schedule, it was decided that only the syndicate owners would have access to him for their mares, in order not to have too great an effect from
one single stallion on the stock in the United States. Records show 183 offspring but there were many more that may not have been registered. This
stallion has proved to be a particularly valuable brood mare sire. He spent time at the facilities of each of the syndicate owners throughout the
country and, in his later years, lived at Blue Moon Ranch in Gavilon Hills, Calif., where he was the happiest and the most settled.

INDIANO’s passing is a great loss for the P.R.E. in the United States, but his genetic legacy will be found for many generations in some of the
most wonderful horses in this country. We wish him green pastures and peace, and we were honored to have him in our lives.

Guarapo

By Lanys Kaye-Eddie with Doug Ramsay

During a visit to the farm of Federico Jimenez
Sainz, we purchased this 6-month-old colt,
GUARAPO, born the son of GENIL, a legendary
beauty and champion of Spain, and his dam, a
wonderful black mare named INTRUSA II, from the
farm of Maria Fernanda de la Escalera. I was
particularly thrilled that Federico was prepared to
sell him to us, as he was one of only two black
offspring of GENIL.

Of all the horses we have been around,
GUARAPO was the most sensitive, the most gentle
and the most anxious to please. He was shown a
number of times but was a bit intimidated by the
atmosphere of a show. He was trained and shown
by Vaughn Smith. He covered many mares in
California and produced some lovely foals, many
of whom exhibited that extraordinary long and
shapely neck he inherited from his sire.

GUARAPO was purchased by Kim Elliott, after which he travelled to South Carolina. After he had been gone for
year or more, I visited him in his stable at one of the shows in Texas, thinking he would remember our wonderful
relationship. But even more wonderful was the fact that he was looking over my shoulder for Kim, with whom he now
had a great relationship. Our condolences go out to Kim, Anne and Derrick Peak, and trainer Sharon Knight.
