Direct the waste gas into the anesthetic suction system or the open air. (2) Gas connection For connecting the gas hose. The gas hose directs the CO2 from the CO2 bottle into the unit. The input pressure may not exceed 65 bar (942 psi). Sockets (3) Footswitch socket For connecting the footswitch. (4) ECB socket (ECB means Erbe Communication Bus) Other compatible units can be connected to the unit. The ECB ensures communication between the units. Connect an ECB cable to these sockets and with one of the other units. Grounding terminal (5) Grounding terminal connection If required, attach a grounding terminal line and connect this to the grounding terminal system of the operating room. Power connection (6) Power connection Connect the unit to a properly installed grounded power outlet. Only use the Erbe power cord or an equivalent power cord for this purpose. The power cord must bear the national test symbol. Power fuses (7) Power fuses The unit is protected with power fuses. If one of these power fuses has blown, the unit may not be used on the patient again until it has been checked by a competent technician. The values of the power fuses are specified on the unit's rating plate. Only spare fuses with these values may be used. 23 / 70 4 • Installation 80113-401 10.15 Chapter 4 Installation Ambient conditions WARNING Ignition of combustible anesthetics, skin cleansers, or disinfectants If you use the unit in the presence of combustible anesthetics, skin cleansers, or disinfectants, these substances could ignite. Risk of fire and explosion to the patient and medical personnel! Danger of material damage. Do not use the unit in the presence of combustible anesthetics, skin cleansers, or disinfectants. NOTICE Interference with the unit by portable and mobile HF communication devices (e.g. mobile phones, WLAN equipment) Electromagnetic waves emitted by portable and mobile HF communication devices can effect the unit. The unit may fail or not perform properly. Please see the table "Recommended separation distances between portable and mobile HF communications equipment and the equipment" at the end of this User Manual. NOTICE Unsuitable temperature or level of humidity during operation If you operate the equipment at an unsuitable temperature or level of humidity, it may sustain damage, fail, or not perform properly. Operate the equipment at a suitable temperature and level of humidity. You will find the tolerances for temperature and humidity in the Technical Data. If other ambient conditions must be observed for operation of the equipment, you will also find them in the Technical Data. NOTICE Unsuitable temperature or humidity in transit or storage If you transport or store the equipment at an unsuitable temperature or level of humidity, it may sustain damage and fail. Transport and store the equipment at a suitable temperature and level of humidity. You will find the tolerances for temperature and humidity in the Technical Data. If other ambient conditions must be observed for transport and storage of the equipment, you will also find them in the Technical Data.


4 • Installation 24 / 70 80113-401 10.15 NOTICE Insufficient acclimatization time, unsuitable temperature during acclimatization If the device was stored or transported below or above a certain temperature, it will take a certain time and temperature to acclimatize. If you do not observe the rules, the device can sustain damage and fail. Acclimatize the device according to the rules in the Technical Data. NOTICE Overheating of the device due to poor ventilation If ventilation is poor, the device can overheat, sustain damage, and fail. Install the device in such a way that there is an unobstructed circulation of air around the housing. Installation in confined wall recesses is prohibited. NOTICE Penetration of liquid into the device The housing is not absolutely watertight. If liquid penetrates, the device can sustain damage and fail. Make sure no liquid can penetrate the device. Ensure that liquid does not penetrate through the instrument socket. Do not place vessels containing liquids on top of the device. Unit The device may only be operated in rooms used for medical purposes. Furthermore, the ambient conditions for the transport, storage, acclimatization and operation of the unit must be observed. The ambient conditions are provided in the Technical Data chapter. Gas bottle Different ambient conditions to those for the unit apply for the operation, acclimatization, transport and storage of the gas bottle. Refer to the Technical Data, Safe handling of carbon dioxide and the gas bottle and Safety Instructions chapters in this User Manual and to the safety instructions provided by the gas supplier. Installing the unit on an Erbe equipment cart Please read the User Manual for the equipment cart concerned. There you will find instructions on how to secure the unit to the equipment cart. Connecting tubes and the footswitch CAUTION Using unsuitable accessories Danger of injury to patient and medical personnel. Only use Erbe instruments, footswitches, waste gas tubes, gas hoses and gas cylinder connections.


25 / 70 4 • Installation 80113-401 10.15 WARNING Dangerous CO2 concentration in room A high concentration of CO2 in the air can cause suffocation. CO2 is heavier than air. If discharge is not controlled, dangerous accumulations can develop close to the ground. Observe the national regulations regarding concentrations of CO2 permitted in the workplace. Connect the Erbe waste gas tube to the waste gas nozzle on the unit. Direct the waste gas into the anesthetic suction system or the open air. This procedure is recommended particularly where activation takes longer. If it is not possible to use the Erbe waste gas tube, ensure that the room is adequately ventilated: enable air to circulate by opening windows and doors or by switching on the air conditioner. Check the seal of all connections once the bottle valve has been opened. No gas may escape. If there are leaks, check that all connections are secure. If you cannot rectify the leak, close the bottle valve and inform Technical Service. Fig. 4-1 When the ERBECRYO 2 is installed on an ERBECRYO 2 Cart, the rear of the unit with the connections faces the ground. See Fig. 4-1. 6


4 • Installation 26 / 70 80113-401 10.15 Connecting the waste gas tube 1. Attach the waste gas tube to the waste gas nozzle (1). This procedure is recommended particularly where activation takes longer. See warning: "Dangerous CO2 concentration in room". 2. Pull back the closure of the waste gas tube. 3. Hold the closure tightly. 4. Slide the waste gas tube fully on to the waste gas nozzle. 5. Release the closure. 6. Direct the waste gas into the anesthetic suction system or the open air. Connecting the gas hose to the gas connection 1. Attach the gas hose to the gas connection (2). 2. Unscrew the nut by hand. 3. Then tighten the nut using a 17 mm open-end wrench. Connecting the footswitch 1. Plug the footswitch connector into the footswitch socket (3). 2. Locate the correct angle of engagement by turning the connector (see illustration). 3. Tighten the retainer nut on the connector by hand. Connecting the gas bottle to the gas cylinder connection CAUTION Wrong gas e.g. N2O, Argon Risk of accidental tissue damage due to uncontrolled cooling with N2O. Risk of damage to the health of the patient and medical personnel if N2O is inhaled. Pressure in the system is too high. The unit can be damaged. Medical personnel and the patient could be injured by flying parts. Only use CO2. Observe the label on the gas bottle. CAUTION CO2 bottle with dip tube, horizontal CO2 bottle Liquid CO2 escapes. Pressure in the unit is too high. The unit can be damaged. Medical personnel and the patient could be injured by flying parts. Do not use a CO2 bottle with a dip tube. Operate the CO2 bottle upright. WARNING Damage to the gas bottle, to the valve. Gas escapes at high pressure. If the gas bottle has been weakened due to serious damage, this can lead to cracks in the wall of the bottle. Considerable stresses and strains occur at the cracks, causing the bottle to break open. Gas emerges at high pressure. The gas bottle is propelled like a rocket. Risk of injury or death for patients and medical staff! Risk of damage to property.

When transporting, storing, and using the gas bottle, prevent it from falling over and dropping by securing it with chains, hoops, or retaining straps. Only transport gas bottles with the valve guard fitted: bottle cap or bottle collar. Operate and store the CO2 bottle upright. Do not place the CO2 bottle close to a heat source. Heaters or air conditioners are examples of heat sources. Do not actively heat the CO2 bottle, e.g. using a fan heater. Do not expose the CO2 bottle to direct sunlight. Observe the safety instructions provided by the gas supplier. Gas cylinder connection To connect the gas bottle and the gas hose you require a gas cylinder connection. The gas cylinder connection is specific to each country. Preparing and checking the gas bottle 1. Make sure that the gas bottle contains CO2. Check the label on the gas bottle. 2. The gas bottle may only be operated upright. Secure the gas bottle using retaining straps, chains, etc. to prevent it from falling over. 3. If you have stored the gas bottle at below 15 °C or over 25 °C, allow the gas bottle to acclimatize at room temperature for 8 hours. Do not actively heat the gas bottle, e.g. using a fan heater. 4. The room temperature should be between 15 °C and 25 °C. It is possible that these values may be exceeded or may not be reached for a short period, as the gas bottle only heats up or cools down slowly. 5. Check the thread of the bottle valve for damage. 6. Do not apply force to the gas bottle, gas cylinder connection and bottle valve. Connecting the gas cylinder connection and the gas hose Fig. 4-2 1. Place the sealing ring in the gas cylinder connection (2). Use of the sealing ring is mandatory. Without a sealing ring, the cryosystem is not leak-tight. 2. Use an open-end wrench to screw the nut on the gas cylinder connection (3) onto the bottle thread. 3. Use a 17 mm open-end wrench to screw the nut on the gas hose (4) onto the gas cylinder connection. 4. Attach the other end of the gas hose to the unit (see Connecting the gas hose to the gas connection p. 26). 5. Switch on the unit and press the Info button.

The pressure may only fall by max. 2 bar. If the fall in pressure is greater, one of the connections is not leak-tight. Inform Technical Service. Do not work with a leaky gas connection. Attach the other end of the gas hose to the unit (see Connecting the gas hose to the gas connection p. 26). 6. Switch on the unit and press the Info button. 7. Open the bottle valve fully and note the input pressure that is displayed. 8. Close the bottle valve and monitor the pressure for approx. 120 seconds. The pressure may only fall by max. 2 bar. Then loosen the gas cylinder connection. 1. Close the bottle valve (1). 2. Using a 17 mm open-end wrench, loosen the nut on the gas hose (4) slightly. The gas escapes from the gas hose. 3. Loosen the nut on the gas hose (4) completely. 4. Pull the gas hose off the gas cylinder connection. 5. Using an open-end wrench, loosen the nut on the gas cylinder connection (3). 6. Pull the gas cylinder connection (2) off the bottle thread. Do not lose the sealing ring. 7. Loosen the retaining straps, chains, etc. of the gas bottle. 8. Where bottles do not have a bottle collar, screw on a valve protection cap. 9. Change the gas bottle.

The bottle valves of both gas bottles must be closed. 2. Using an open-end wrench, loosen the nuts on the gas bottles (1) slightly. The gas escapes from the gas hose. 3. Loosen the nuts on the gas bottles (1) completely. 4. Pull the switching valve off the bottle threads. Do not lose the sealing rings. 5. Loosen the retaining straps, chains, etc. of the gas bottles. 6. Where bottles do not have a bottle collar, screw on a valve protection cap. 7. Change the gas bottles. Switching between two gas bottles using the switching valve If you have connected two gas bottles to the ERBECRYO 2 using a switching valve, you can use the tap to switch between the gas bottles. 1. Open the bottle valve of the full gas bottle. 2. Turn the tap with the arrow towards the full gas bottle. 3. Close the bottle valve of the empty gas bottle. 1 2

The power cord must bear the applicable national test symbol. Check the power cord for damage. You must not use a damaged power cord. The supply voltage must match the voltage specified on the unit's rating plate. Do not use multiple power outlets. Do not use extension cords. WARNING Incorrect line fuse, defective device Risk of electric shock to the patient and medical personnel! Risk of damage to property. Blown line fuses may only be replaced by a competent technician. Only replacement fuses that have the same rating as the one specified on the unit’s rating plate may be used. When a fuse has been changed, the function of the unit must be verified. If the unit does not function properly or if there are any concerns, please contact Erbe. WARNING Damaged device or damaged accessories, modified device or accessories Danger of injury for patient and medical personnel! Danger of material damage. Check the device and accessories for damage every time before using them (e.g. footswitch, instruments, instrument cables and equipment cart). Check the gas connection, waste gas nozzle and instrument connection in particular for damage. You must not use damaged equipment or damaged accessories. Replace defective accessories. If the unit or accessories are damaged, please contact Technical Service. For your safety and that of the patient: Never attempt to perform repairs or make modifications yourself. Any modification will invalidate liability on the part of Erbe Elektromedizin GmbH. Electrical connection Only use the Erbe power cord or an equivalent power cord. The power cord must bear the national test symbol. 1. Connect the power cord to the power connection at the back of the unit. 2. Plug the power cord into a properly installed grounded power outlet. The supply voltage must match the voltage specified on the unit's rating plate. Only connect the unit to a public low-voltage power supply network with grounding. Grounding terminal If necessary, connect the grounding terminal pin of the unit to the grounding terminal system of the operating room using a grounding terminal line.

No gas may escape. Switching on, self-test Switching on 1. Before using the cryosystem, make sure that it has been correctly installed and that the gas bottle is in operation. 2. Use the power switch to switch the unit on. Self-test Fig. 5-1 The unit performs a self-test. Main screen Fig. 5-3 The instrument is equipped with a data carrier on which settings are saved. The instrument is detected. The settings are displayed on the main screen. You can work with the settings or change them. • In segment (1) of the display you will see an illustration of the instrument. • In segment (2) of the display you will see the effects. By selecting the effect you can influence the temperature of the probe tip. The higher the effect, the colder the probe tip will be. The bars beneath the effect show how many effects are supported by the instrument. The current instrument supports three effects. Effect 2 has been set. • In segment (3) of the display you will see status and error messages. They are described in the Status messages, error messages chapter. • In segment (4) of the display you will see the Timer. The timer provides various options for measuring the freeze interval. The current setting is Count Up & Beep. • In segment (5) of the display you will see the selected Program. With the current setting, no program is selected. You can save the effect and the timer setting in a program. 10 memory locations are provided. WARNING Damaged, leaky instrument CO2 can flow in an uncontrolled fashion and at high pressure into the patient's body. Risk of a gas embolism. Risk of death for the patient. Do not bend rigid instruments. Do not kink flexible instruments. Do not apply mechanical force to the instruments. Before each use, complete a visual check of the instrument and the instrument tube for mechanical damage. The instrument tube must not show any signs of abrasion. The rigid instrument must not be bent. Before each use, check the instrument function and seal. The check is described in the instructions for use of the instrument. The greater the effect, the colder the probe tip will be. The bars beneath the effect show how many effects are supported by the instrument. Setting an effect Fig. 5-4 Press the selection button next to the up/down arrows to set an effect. The effect is predefined for some instruments and cannot be changed. Instead of setting an effect and a timer manually, you can also use programs in which the effect and timer are saved. See: Selecting a program, Saving a program, Overwriting a program, Deleting a program. Setting a timer The timer provides various options for measuring the freeze interval: Timer off A freeze interval is not measured. 1. Press the selection button next to the Timer displayto call up the Timer menu. 2. Select No Timer with the selection buttons next to the up/down arrows. 3. Press the selection button next to OK on the display. Fig. 5-5 In the Timer segment (4) in the main screen you will see: Timer OFF. Count Up With the footswitch pressed, you activate Freeze mode. The timer counts the freeze interval in seconds. If you release the footswitch, the freeze interval remains visible on the display. The next time it is activated, the timer begins again at 0 seconds. 1. Press the selection button next to the Timer displayto call up the Timer menu. 2. Count Up & Beep If you press the footswitch, you activate Freeze mode. The timer counts the freeze interval in seconds. An acoustic signal sounds once every second. If you release the footswitch, the freeze interval remains visible on the display. The next time it is activated, the timer begins again at 0 seconds. 1. Press the selection button next to the Timer displayto call up the Timer menu. 2. Select Count Up & Beep with the selection buttons next to the up/down arrows. 3. Press the selection button next to OK on the display. Fig. 5-7 In the Timer segment (4) in the main screen you will see the Count Up & Beep icon. Count Down & Beep You select a Count Down interval. If you press the footswitch, you activate Freeze mode. The Count Down begins. Once the Count Down has been completed, an acoustic signal sounds. If you continue to press the footswitch after the Count Down has been completed, Freeze mode is active again. If you release the footswitch and interrupt the current Count Down, you will see the remaining Count Down interval on the display. The next time it is activated, the Count Down begins from the start. 1. Press the selection button next to the Timer displayto call up the Timer menu. 2. Select Count Down & Beep with the selection buttons next to the up/down arrows. 3. Press the selection button next to OK on the display. 4. Select a Count Down interval of 1 - 100 seconds with the selection buttons next to the up/down arrows. 5. Press the selection button next to OK on the display. Freezing, thawing Freezing 1. Position the instrument. Fig. 5-9 2. Press the footswitch. With the footswitch pressed, you activate Freeze mode. In segment (2) of the display you will see the freeze icon (Freeze mode). 3. Note the selected timer setting with the optical and acoustic signals in each case. Thawing Fig. 5-10 1. Release the footswitch. In segment (2) of the display you will see the thaw icon (Thaw mode) for instruments that can be thawed. 2. If required, you can interrupt the thawing phase and activate freezing. Bleed-off Fig. 5-11 Following the thawing phase, the unit performs bleed-off. In segment (2) of the display you will see the bleed-off icon (Bleed mode). The gas escapes from the system. If required, you can interrupt the bleed-off phase and activate freezing. Use only disinfectant which complies with the relevant national standards. Instructions for cleaning and disinfection Mix the disinfectant in the concentration specified by the manufacturer. Clean surfaces contaminated with blood before using the disinfectant; otherwise it may be less effective. Wipe the surfaces. Make sure the surfaces are treated uniformly. Comply with the action time of the disinfectant specified by the manufacturer. Technical safety checks must be performed at least once a year. What technical safety checks must be performed? For this device the following technical safety checks have been stipulated: • Checking of labels and User Manual • Visual inspection of unit and accessories for damage • Testing the grounded conductor in accordance with IEC 60601-1 Section 18 • Testing the leakage current in accordance with IEC 60601-1 Section 19 • Functional testing of all the unit's operating and control elements • Testing footswitch activation • Seal test, pneumatic test program • Obstruction test, pneumatic test program • Flow measurement, pneumatic test program The results of the safety checks must be documented. If during the safety checks any defects are found which might endanger patients, staff or third parties, the device may not be operated until the defects have been remedied by competent service technicians.
