5th Sunday of Matthew

Saint The Dormition of Saint Anna
Sophia
According to tradition, Anna, the ancestor of God, lived for sixty-
Cathedal nine years, and her spouse Joachim, for eighty; according to one ac-
count, Saint Joachim died two years before Saint Anna. The
Miami, Theotokos had been orphaned of both her parents already when
Florida she was eleven years of age, when she was living in the Temple (see
Sept. 8 and Nov. 21). Saint Anna is invoked for conceiving chil-
dren, and for help in difficult childbirth.

Resurrectional Apolytikion - Tone 4
Τὸ φαιδρὸν τῆς Ἀναστάσεως κήρυγμα,

When the women Disciples of the Lord had learned from the Angel the joyful message of the
Resurrection and had rejected the ancestral decision, they cried aloud to the Apostles trium-
phantly: Death has been despoiled, Christ God has risen, granting His great mercy to the world.

Apolotykion for the Dormition of St. Anna in the Fourth Mode

Ζωήν τήν κυήσασαν, εκυοφόρησας, αγνήν Θεομήτορα,

O Godly-minded Anna, thou didst give birth unto God's pure Mother who conceived Him Who
is our Life. Wherefore, thou hast now passed with joy to thy heavenly rest, wherein is the abode of
them that rejoice in glory; and thou askest forgiveness of sins for them that honour thee with love,

O ever-blessed one.

Apolytikion for St. Sophia Tone 3

.

Having you and your three daughters, as a sacred boast the Church rejoices, and with gladness
she praises you, You are to me my pride and joy, as are the most precious relics of your children;
Oh Glorious Martyrs: Sophia, Faith, Hope and Love, intercede to Christ our God to save our

souls.

Seasonal Kontakion Tone 2

Προγόνων Χριστού, τήν μνήμην εορτάζομεν,

We celebrate now the mem'ry of Christ's ancestors, while asking their help with faith, that we may
all be saved from all manner of tribulation as we fervently cry aloud: Be thou with us, O Lord our

God, Whose pleasure it was to glorify them both.

Scripture Readings

Epistle Reading:
St. Paul's firstLetter to the Corinthians 12:27-31; 13:1-8.

Brethren, you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And God has ap-
pointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of

miracles, then healers, helpers, administrators, speakers in various kinds of tongues. Are
all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all possess
gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? But earnestly desire the
higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way. If I speak in the tongues of
men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I
have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all
faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have,
and if I deliver my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient
and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist
on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in
the right. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never ends.

Gospel Reading:
The Reading is from Matthew 8:28-34; 9:1

At that time, when Jesus came to the other side, to the country of the Gergesenes, two
demoniacs met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one would pass that way.
And behold, they cried out, "What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you
come here to torment us before the time?" Now a herd of many swine was feeding at
some distance from them. And the demons begged him, "If you cast us out, send us away
into the herd of swine." And he said to them, "Go." So they came out and went into the
swine; and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, and

perished in the waters. The herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told
everything, and what had happened to the demoniacs. And behold, all the city
came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their
neighborhood. And getting into a boat he crossed over and came to his own
city.
