THREE HIERARCHS
STS. BASIL THE GREAT, JOHN CHRYSSOSTOM
GREGORY THE THEOLOGIAN
Saint This common feast of these three teachers was instituted a little before
Sophia the year 1100, during the reign of the Emperor Alexis I Comnenus, be-
Greek cause of a dispute and strife that arose among the notable and virtuous
Orthodox men of that time. Some of them preferred Basil, while others preferred
Gregory, and yet others preferred John Chrysostom, quarreling among
Cathedral themselves over which of the three was the greatest. Furthermore, each
party, in order to distinguish itself from the others, assumed the name of its
Miami, preferred Saint; hence, they called themselves Basilians, Gregorians, or
Florida Johannites. Desiring to bring an end to the contention, the three Saints
appeared together to the saintly John Mavropous, a monk who had been
January 30TH ordained Bishop of Euchaita, a city of Asia Minor, they revealed to him
2022 that the glory they have at the throne of God is equal, and told him to
compose a common service for the three of them, which he did with great
Telephone: skill and beauty. Saint John of Euchaita (celebrated Oct. 5) is also the
305- 854-2922 composer of the Canon to the Guardian Angel, the Protector of a Man's
Life. In his old age, he retired from his episcopal see and again took up the
Fax: monastic life in a monastery in Constantinople. He reposed during the
305-858-1854 reign of the aforementioned Emperor Alexis Comnenus (1081-1118).

Resurrectional Apolytikion –Tone pl 2
Κατέλυσας τῷ Σταυρῷ σου τὸν θάνατον,
By means of Your Cross, O Lord, You abolished death. * To the robber You opened
Paradise. * The lamentation of the myrrhbearing women You transformed, * and You gave
Your Apostles the order to proclaim to all * that You had risen, O Christ our God, * and
granted the world Your great mercy
Apolytikion for Three Hierarchs in the First Mode
Τούς τρείς μεγίστους φωστήρας τής Τρισηλίου θεότητος
The three most great luminaries of the Three-Sun Divinity have illumined all of the world
with the rays of doctrines divine and true; they are the sweetly-flowing rivers of wisdom, who
with godly knowledge have watered all creation in clear and mighty streams: The great and
sacred Basil, and the Theologian, wise Gregory, together with the renowned John, the
famed Chrysostom of golden speech. Let us all who love their divinely-wise words come to-
gether, honouring them with hymns; for ceaselessly they offer entreaty for us to the Trinity.
Apolytikion for St. Sophia Tone 3
Χαίρει ἔχουσα ἡ Ἐκκλησία, σὲ καὶ τέκνα σου καύχημα θεῖον,
Having you and your three daughters as a sacred boast, the Church rejoices and with glad-
ness she praises you, You are to me my pride and joy, as are the most precious relics of your
children; Oh Glorious Martyrs: Sophia, Faith, Hope and Love, intercede to Christ our
God to save our souls.
Kontakion Tone1
Ὁ μήτραν παρθενικὴν ἁγιάσας τῶ τόκω σου,
Your birth sanctified a Virgin's womb and properly blessed the hands of Symeon. Having
now come and saved us O Christ our God, give peace to Your commonwealth in troubled
times and strengthen those in authority, whom You love, as only the loving One.
Scripture Readings
Epistle Reading:
The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 13:7-16.
Brethren, remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God; consider the
outcome of their lives, and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today
and for ever. Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings; for it is well that the heart
be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited their adherents. We have
an altar from which those who serve the tent have no right to eat. For the bodies of those ani-
mals whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest as a sacrifice for sin are
burned outside the camp. So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the
people through his own blood. Therefore let us go forth to him outside the camp and bear
the abuse he endured. For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city which is to come.
Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of
lips that acknowledge his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for
such sacrifices are pleasing to God.
Gospel Reading:
The Reading is from Matthew 5:14-19
The Lord said to his disciples, "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill
cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and
it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see
your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Think not that I
have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to
fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a
dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the
least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom
of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the king-
dom of heaven."
Christian Stewardship is…
…learning how to be a responsible and
concerned caretaker of Christ’s Church;
it is learning how to enjoy Church life
and be happy in Church work., for in
Her dwells the fullness of the Spirit of
God.
…our active commitment to use all our
time, talent and treasure for the benefit
of humankind in grateful acknowledg-
ment of Christ’s redeeming love.
…caring for the needs of others.
…offering one’s self to God as He
offered Himself to us.
…what a person does after saying “I
believe…”, as proof of that belief.
…devotion and service to God and His
Church as persons, as families, as
diocese/metropolis, as national Church
and as Church universal.
It is by offering our blessings back to God
that He will be able to continue His
forgiving, healing, liberating, empowering,
transfiguring, loving ministry through the
Church. For God, Infinite though He be, has
chosen to work through us, through our
gifts, to continue His saving work in the
world today.

Our Goya ministering to the community
Sleepout America is a fundraiser for the Covenant House, an
organization of shelters for homeless and trafficked youth. Every
year, the Covenant House hosts a Sleepout where participants
sleep in a place that is uncomfortable (the floor, a box, a car etc.)
for one night as a symbol of solidarity towards homeless and
trafficked youth. Our GOYAns will be participating in a district
wide Sleepout on March 11th, 2022. Participants will fundraise
through Donor Drive (from now until the night of the Sleepout which will be held in-
person at St. Mark’s in Boca Raton.) There will be priest-led discussions, time for
reflection, and of course a night spent sleeping outdoors to recreate what homeless youth
face on a daily basis.
