SAINT SOPHIA CATHEDRAL

MIAMI, FLORIDA

Gregory the Illuminator of Armenia

Sunday, September 30th, 2018

This Saint, a Parthian by race, was the son of Anak. He was born about the year
240 and was taught the Faith of Christ in Caesarea of Cappadocia. He entered
the service of Tiridates, King of Armenia, but when discovered to be a Christian, he
was subjected to many horrible torments at
the King's hands, then was cast into a pit of
mire with poisonous serpents and left to die.
By the power of God, however, he abode
there unharmed for fourteen years, his needs
provided by a certain widow, until he was
made known by revelation and set free. He
converted to piety innumerable multitudes of
Armenians, including Tiridates himself, and
was consecrated bishop by Leontius, Arch-
bishop of Caesarea, to shepherd the vast
flock he had gained for Christ. He spent the
last part of his life in retirement in the asceti-
cal discipline, and reposed in peace about
the year 325. Saint Gregory is honoured as
the Illuminator of Armenia.

Apolytikion for the Resurrection– Tone 1

Τοῦ λίθου σφραγισθέντος ὑπὸ τῶν Ἰουδαίων

The stone had been secured with a seal by the Judeans, * and a guard of soldiers was
watching Your immaculate body. * You rose on the third day, O Lord * and Savior, granting
life unto the world. * For this reason were the powers of heaven crying out to You, O Life-

giver: * Glory to Your resurrection, O Christ; * glory to Your eternal rule; * glory to Your
dispensation, only One who loves mankind.

Apolytikion for Gregory the Iluminator Tone 4

As a sharer of the ways and a successor to the throne of the Apostles, O inspired of God,
thou foundest discipline to be a means of ascent to divine vision. Wherefore, having rightly
divided the word of truth, thou didst also contest for the Faith even unto blood, O Hiero-

martyr Gregory. Intercede with Christ our God that our souls be saved.

Apolytikion for St. Sophia Tone 3

Χαίρει ἔχουσα ἡ Ἐκκλησία,

Having you and your three daughters, as a sacred boast the Church rejoices, and with glad-
ness she praises you, You are to me my pride and joy, as are the most precious relics of your

children; Oh Glorious Martyrs: Sophia, Faith, Hope and Love, intercede to Christ our
God to save our souls.

Kontakion in Tone 4

Προστασία τῶν Χριστιανῶν ἀκαταίσχυντε,

O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the creator most
constant: O despise not the voices of those who have sinned; but be quick, O good one, to
come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession and speed thou to make

supplication, O thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.

Scripture Readings

Epistle Reading:

The Reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 9:6-11

BRETHREN, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountiful-
ly will also reap bountifully. Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or
under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with eve-
ry blessing in abundance, so that you may always have enough of everything and may provide

in abundance for every good work. As it is written, "He scatters abroad, he gives to the
poor; his righteousness endures for ever." He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for
food will supply and multiply your resources and increase the harvest of your righteousness.
You will be enriched in every way for great generosity, which through us will produce thanks-

giving to God.

Gospel Reading:

The Reading is from the Gospel According to Luke 5:1-11

The Lord said, "And as you wish that men would do to you, do so to them. If you love those
who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if
you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do
the same. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to
you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love your enemies, and do
good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be
sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish. Be merciful, even as

your Father is merciful."

SAINT SOPHIA FEAST DAY
CHAMPAGNE BUFFET

A letter from our Saint Sophia Feast Day honoree; Mr. John Catsimatidis
Read Sunday, September 23rd 2018

Dear Fr. Spiro, Dr. Dame Evangeline Gouletas Chairman, of the Annual Feast Day Celebration, Church
Parishioners and friends.

I greet you with my warmest spiritual love. I sincerely apologize for not being able to be with you today.
My Intent was to come to Miami, spend the weekend in Miami, to attend Church at the St. Sophia Cathe-
dral and meet new friends at the event.

My Family has always worked for the Church from my Great Grandfather who was Chancelor of Patriar-
chy in the 1890's. I became an Alter Boy at the age of 12 in NYC and rose to the highest position a lay-
man can have in our Church as Vice Chair Archdiocesan Council handling the business affairs of the
Archdiocese and Church for 3 years under Archbishop Spyridon.

I love our Church and now oversee 'Religious Freedom in the World' under the auspices of our Patriarch
Bartholomew, Archons and Patriarch, Anthony Limberakis and Father Alexander Karloutsos. Spiritual
Advisor to the Archons. 400,000 Christians have Perished in the last 10 years in the Middle East and this
must stop.

I learned this week I needed to have a Medical Procedure this coming Friday and the doctors prefer I do
not fly. Even though the doctors say don't worry, the patient ALWAYS WORRIES. The procedure is 99.9
% safe.

I have FEDEXED Chairwoman Dr. Dame Gouletas a longtime friend of mine, my intended Sponsorship
Contribution of $10,000 dollars. Since I started in the Grocery Business and believe in Double Coupons, I
will FEDEX an additional $10,000 for the St. Sophia Cathedral because I
am not there.

Have an extra OUZO on me and please light a Candle that my medical
procedure goes well this week.

I will come and visit the Cathedral in the near future after I heal from the
medical procedure.

With all my love and admiration for your strives and accomplishments,

John Catsimatidis

THIS YEAR’S ARCHANGEL MICHAEL AWARD NOMINEES

This Year’s 2018 Archangel Michael Feast & Honors Banquet will be Saturday, November
10th at 6:00 p.m. The following day, His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios will preside at
the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at Annunciation Cathedral.
We are happy to announce that the Cathedral of Saint Sophia has nominated

Stella Kounelis and Irene Lirakis as this year’s honorees.

The Archangel Michael Feast was prayerfully conceived by His Emminence Metropolitan
Alexios upon arriving in Atlanta, as the annual double feast of the Metropolis family. Since
1998, the Metropolis family comes together in Atlanta on the weekend of, prior to or fol-

lowing the November 8th Feastday of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel.
It is to honor and celebrate our Patron Saint and the lives of two people from each parish,
who are living examples of teh Orthodox Christian life and journey to Theosis. By exten-

sion, this special Metropolis feast also serves as the annual Metropolis celebration and
thanksgiving for all devout stewards of the faith, giving their time and talent.

It is with joy and gladness that we
thank those who gave of there
time, talent and treasure to help
make this year’s St. Sophia
champagne buffet a success.
