the Presbyter and Aethalas
the Deacon of Persia

Saint Martyrs Akepsimas the Bishop, Joseph the Presbyter and Aethalas
Sophia the Deacon of Persia were leaders of the Christian Church in the
Persian city of Naesson. His flock devotedly loved their hierarch
Cathedral for his ascetic life and tireless pastoral work. The emperor Sapor
ordered his men to seek out and kill Christian clergy. Saint Akep-
Miami, simas also was arrested, even though he was already an eighty-
Florida year-old man. They took him to the city of Arbela, where he came
before the judge Ardarkh, a pagan priest of the sun god. The holy
November 3rd Elder refused to offer sacrifice to the Persian gods. For this he was

day the seventy-year-old priest Joseph and the deacon Aethalas

305- 854-2922 years the saints were held in confinement, and suffered from hun-
ger and thirst. Emperor Sapor came to the temple of the god of
Fax: fire, located not far from Arbela, and wanted to take a look at the
305-858-1854 three holy martyrs. Exhausted and covered with festering wounds,
the saints were brought before the emperor. When he asked them
Website: to worship the pagan gods they firmly refused, confessing their
faith in Christ instead. The holy bishop was beheaded, but the

The execution of the presbyter Joseph was prolonged for several

Resurrectional Apolytikion - Tone 3

Εὐφραινέσθω τὰ οὐράνια,

Let the heavens sing for joy, and let everything on earth be glad. * For with His Arm the Lord
has worked power. * He trampled death under foot by means of death; * and He became the
firstborn from the dead. * From the maw of Hades He delivered us; * and He granted the world

His great mercy. .

Apolytikion for Martyrs Ascepsimas, Joseph & Aeithalas in the Fourth Mode
Οι Μάρτυρές σου, Κύριε, εν τή αθλήσει αυτών,

Thy Martyrs, O Lord, in their courageous contest for Thee received as the prize the crowns of
incorruption and life from Thee, our immortal God. For since they possessed Thy strength,
they cast down the tyrants and wholly destroyed the demons' strengthless presumption. O
Christ God, by their prayers, save our souls, since Thou art merciful.

Apolytikion for St. Sophia Tone 3

Χαίρει ἔχουσα ἡ Ἐκκλησία,

Having you and your three daughters, as a sacred boast the Church rejoices, and with gladness
she praises you, You are to me my pride and joy, as are the most precious relics of your children;
Oh Glorious Martyrs: Sophia, Faith, Hope and Love, intercede to Christ our God to save

our souls.

O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the creator most con-
stant: O despise not the voices of those who have sinned; but be quick, O good one, to come
unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession and speed thou to make suppli-

cation, O thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.

Epistle Reading

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 1:11-19.

Brethren, I would have you know that the gospel which was preached by me is not
man's gospel. For I did not receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through
a revelation of Jesus Christ. For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I
persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it; and I advanced in Ju-
daism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for
the traditions of my fathers. But when he who had set me apart before I was born,
and had called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order
that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not confer with flesh and blood, nor
did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into
Arabia; and again I returned to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Je-
rusalem to visit Cephas, and remained with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the
other apostles except James the Lord's brother.

Gospel Reading

The Reading is from Luke 16:19-31

The Lord said, "There was a rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen and
who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazaros,
full of sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table; moreover
the dogs came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried by the angels
to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried; and in Hades, being in
torment, he lifted up his eyes, and saw Abraham far off and Lazaros in his bosom.
And he called out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy upon me, and send Lazaros to dip
the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.'
But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good
things, and Lazaros in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you

STEWARDSHIP

To date we have 168 Families that have given a Financial
pledge to the Cathedral of St. Sophia. If you have not yet
sent in your Stewardship for 2019 Please do so! Our
Stewardship Year is in its 4th quarter and we will begin our
2020 Campaign on November 17th . Please take care of
your gift this week.

Your are the Voice of Christ in a
changing World

The base from which we serve as the Voice of Christ in a
Changing World is the parish. A strong parish provides op-
portunities for sharing the Good News of Christ, for wel-
coming those that are searching for a spiritual home, and a
base from which we are sent out into the world. The parish
also provides a place for worship, community and education
in the faith. To be stewards of the Gospel, we need to be
stewards of our parish. This requires the vision and inspira-
tion to see the parish, not as it is, but as it could be. We are
called to offer ourselves and our treasure to make our local
church all that is can be.

are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been
fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none
may cross from there to us.' And he said, 'Then I beg you, father, to send him to my
father's house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they also come
into this place of torment.' But Abraham said, 'They have Moses, and the prophets;
let them hear them.' And he said, 'No, father Abraham; but if some one goes to them
from the dead, they will repent.' He said to them, 'If they do not hear Moses and the
prophets, neither will they be convinced if some one should rise from the dead.'"
