TOP VIEW

The floorplan for the national zoo “Me and the Bee” playground has been
designed to communicate the story of a bee’s life with the children as they
play. Using the tracks placed on the ground kids can follow the lives of bees
as they find pollen, obtain water, burrow in hives, and make honey.

HONEY TRAIL

HONEYCOMB GATEWAY
This honeycomb wall will be the entrance to the playground. Constructed of
metal tubing and translucent acrylic, this structure will serve as an abstract
introduction to the world of bees for children. Standing at 110” the archway is
designed to allow for golf carts to pass below.

POLLEN TRAIL

FLOWER STEM
These flowers made of HDPE and metal tubing serve as high quality
accessories that will help immerse the children in the bees world using
the sense of scale. The base of these flowers can also be used to hold
information panels about bees and the important job that they play in our
environment. The images shown are based on conceptual design and are

POLLEN TRAIL

BEE SCULPTURE
This GFRC climber will provide a large scale bee for children to climb and also
serve to teach them about the process of pollination. Information signs will be
placed near to explain the process, but being able to physically interact with
the process helps teach the children as well.

HONEY TRAIL

BEE ON LEAF CLIMBER
This bee climber focuses on a different part of the bee’s journey. This climber
shows how bees would gather water and signs would describe how the bees
use the water and their second stomachs to make honey back in their hives.
This piece helps explain the story of a bee’s life while also providing a fun
structure for children to climb. The images shown are based on conceptual design and are
subject to changes during manufacturing.

POLLEN TRAIL

POLLEN PODS
These sculptures will sit outside the perimeter of the park and will therefor
serve as artistic additions to the park. Their presence allows for the discussion
of how pollen works and to serve as a colorful and visually stimulating
approach to that goal.

POLLEN TRAIL

MOTHER TREE
The Mother Tree is the center piece of the park and helps immerse the
children in the bee hive. The piece is constructed of GFRC and uses an
epoxy resin to simulate honey. The structure includes sculptures of honey
bees, various stages of development as well as different classes, Worker,
Drone, and Queen. The images shown are based on conceptual design and are
subject to changes during manufacturing.

HIVE TRAIL

MAN MADE HIVE BENCHES
These GFRC pieces will be some seating availability for guests. These
benches seize the opportunity to teach children and parents alike about
man made beehives and the basics for caring for bees. These structures
could alternate between homes for honey and carpenter bees to show the
differences in their homes. The images shown are based on conceptual design and are
subject to changes during manufacturing.

HIVE TRAIL

HIVE CRAWL TUNNEL
This GFRC crawl through will give children the chance to burrow with the
bees. Inside the hive children get to learn how the hive operates first hand with
scale models of each classification of honey bee, Worker, Drone, and Queen.
Additional information panels can convey further explanations of the process.

HIVE TRAIL

HONEY COMB STEPPERS
These steppers offer a great deal of flexibility in this design process. They can
be made of HDPE or GFRC to fit the needs of the park. Several additional
theming features can be included such as, laminate honey puddles and high
resolution bee images to show the growing stages of bees in their hive.

HIVE TRAIL

HONEY COMB CLIMBER
This rotational molded climber introduces a structure for children to explore.
Potential design opportunities for this structure include creating GRFC bees to
act as climbers and using individual tubes to create a wheel chair accessible
archway.

ENRICHING THE EXPERIENCE

INFORMATION STANDS
These stands will populate the park to describe important lessons that
children can take away from each play structure. These can be themed very
specifically for the structure it is applied to or can be more general. These
signs can contain fun facts about bees as well as describe the lifecycle of
bees sequentially. The images shown are based on conceptual design and are
