LETTER FROM THE DEAN 2023 in Retrospect “2023 saw a wave of change at SoCE. While we celebrate the appointment of Dato' Prof. Dr. Ahmad Farhan Mohd. Sadullah as UPM's Vice Chancellor, we also bid farewell to several esteemed members. Sadly, renowned scientists Prof. Dr. Hamidi Abd Aziz and Prof. Dr. Choong Kok Keong, along with Dr. Shaharudin Shah Zaini and Dr. Nastaien Qamaruz Zaman, have chosen to retire after a long and distinguished careers at SoCE. Additionally, Prof. Dr. Suffian Yusoff has embarked on a new chapter in public service as an ADUN for Kedah, while Mrs. Farah Hamid and Mrs Nurul Masrifah Abd Rahim have transitioned to a new role within the university. We also wish Mr. Abdul ‘Aziim Jaafar all the best in his new role as an officer with the state government” Thank you for all your dedication and you will be missed. The MSc programmes by mixed-mode in *Structural Engineering and Environmental Engineering offered by the School, attracts both local and international students. Since the academic session of 2019/2020, the School has offered another MSc mixed-mode programme (MSc in Fire Safety Engineering) in collaboration with the other five (5) Engineering Schools in Engineering Campus. *In 2024, MSc Environmental and Structural Engineering intake is put on hold for curriculum review 11


SITEVISIT 2023 site visits were conducted throughout the year depending on the requirement of subjects. There were 8 visits related to environmental subjects, 3 to geotechnical and geological subjects, 3 to structural and construction materials subjects and 1 to water resources subject. Although most of the visits were in Penang, some visits were conducted in Cameron Highlands, Sik, Ipoh and Perlis. During these visits, students were able to witness firsthand the practical applications of their theoretical knowledge. They worked alongside experienced civil engineers who shared their knowledge and expertise. The students were able to observe how infrastructure is designed, constructed and maintained. They also had the opportunity to see the challenges faced by engineers in the field and how they overcome them. These visits gave the students a new perspective on the importance of their courses and the role they will play in shaping the future of infrastructure development. 15 12


INDUSTRY GUEST LECTURES In a groundbreaking initiative, the SoCE recently hosted a series of lectures featuring distinguished professionals from the industry. The seven-session series drew active participation from 110 students, spanning from first-year to fourth-year bachelor's degree students. The guest lecturers, experts in their respective fields, shared valuable insights and experiences, enriching the academic journey of the students. The lineup of industry leaders included Dr. Wesam Al Madhoun, Founder of Global Ambassadors of Sustainability; Ir Yeap Geok Ngoh, Director at Jurutera MTC Sdn. Bhd.; Mr. Gey Eng Keat, Business Development Manager at Keller Foundations S.E. Asia Ptd. Ltd.; Ir Lim Lum Kong from Solmax; Tuan TPr Mohd Bashir Bin Sulaiman, representing Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pinang; Dr. Pooria Ghadir from the University of Exeter; and Mrs. Mahani Binti Muhammad, Pegawai Perancang Bandar at Lembaga Pembangunan Langkawi. Covering a diverse range of topics, such as sustainability in civil engineering, innovative engineering solutions, urban planning, and the latest developments in geotechnical engineering, the lectures provided students with a unique opportunity to interact with and learn from industry leaders. The initiative was well-received by both students and faculty, highlighting the SoCE's commitment to providing a comprehensive and industry-relevant education. The series not only enhanced the academic experience but also fostered meaningful connections between the students and influential professionals in the field. Researcher in the spotlight Prof. Madya. Ir. Dr. Fadzli Mohammed Nazri, the Dean of SoCE had been awarded with Trasdisciplinary Research Grant of RM1,034,350 by Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) Malaysia. This research is entitled as “Commcity: Integrated System For Efficient Disaster Management”. The other research team members are Dr Siti Rahyla Rahmat from School of Social Sciences, Ts. Dr. Shankar A/L Karuppayah from National Advanced IPv6 Center of Excellence and Dr. Azleena Mohd Kassim from School of Computer Sciences. On 3rd October 2023, Research Creativity and Management Office (RMCO), USM celebrated their winning together with other recipients who have been granted other grants such as Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS) and Prototype Development Research Grant (PRGS). 19

This accomplishment is a testament to their exceptional research capabilities. Prof. Dr. Nur Sabahiah Abdul Sukor has emerged as a proactive advocate through her impactful news articles, such as "Slow Shift to Mass Transit" featured in The STAR and "Wajibkan Kereta Baharu Pasang Kamera Papan Pemuka" published in Berita Harian. As an esteemed contributor, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nur Sabahiah has dedicated her expertise to shedding light on critical issues surrounding road safety, addressing concerns and proposing practical solutions. Her articles delves into the challenges hindering the transition to mass transit, urging the community to consider sustainable alternatives for safer and more efficient transportation. Best Reviewer 1 The Korean Society of Steel Construction (KSSC) and its affiliated journal promotes the use of structural steel and related technologies. The International Journal of Steel Structures (IJOSS) is the KSSC's official publication. Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Fatimah De’nan received the 2023 Best Reviewer Award at the 12th International Symposium on Steel Structures held in Jeju, South Korea, for her invaluable contribution to the journal and outstanding dedication. Jabatan KerjaRaya (JKR) ft. SoCE USM is at the forefront of enhancing its collaborative efforts with the Malaysian Public Works Department (JKR) through the Forensic Structural Engineering Team (ForSET) within SoCE. This strategic alliance, facilitated by the Structural Forensic Services Division, signifies a significant step towards expanding knowledge sources in alignment with the nation's developmental aspirations. The partnership, solidified through a formal agreement, not only emphasizes USM's status as a leading research university in Malaysia but also recognizes JKR as the primary government technical agency providing expert advisory services in the field of Structural Forensic Engineering. The collaboration aims to foster consultancy and research initiatives in Forensic Engineering, underscoring the commitment of both institutions to advancing expertise in this critical domain. This collaboration is anticipated to fortify the development of knowledge, local wisdom, and research capabilities. Beyond academic pursuits, the collaboration seeks to enhance the quality of public service delivery, thereby making a positive impact on both the community and the nation at large. The recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing paved the way for a 3-day visit by more than 30 JKR personnel, including department heads, senior engineers, and staff from various levels within the Engineering and Structures Branch of the Public Works Department. During this visit, Ir Luqman Hakim and Ir Bernard Toides from JKR, in conjunction with Prof Ir Dr Badorul Hisham and Prof Dr Megat Azmi from SoCE, delivered a comprehensive talk on Forensics in Civil Engineering to the students. 27

In the year 2023, the SoCE of USM achieved significant milestones in establishing research and academic collaborations, further solidifying its position as a hub for innovative and impactful partnerships. The school successfully entered into a total of four Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and one academic collaboration, showcasing its commitment to fostering connections with both industry and academic institutions. The four MoUs signed by SoCE in 2023 include: 1. Edgenta Propel Berhad 2. Minconsult Sdn. Bhd. 3. Nantong Institute of Technology, China Jabatan Kerja Raya (Cawangan Kejuruteraan Awam dan Struktur) 4. MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING (MoU) AND OTHER RESEARCH AGREEMENT Additionally, SoCE established an academic collaboration and exchange agreement with Yangtze Normal University (YZNU), further expanding its international network. This agreement aims to facilitate academic exchanges, joint research initiatives, and collaborative projects between faculty members and students from both institutions. Community A community engagement program, titled 'Environmental Care Education Program,' was organized with the cooperation of APPGM-SDG as the program sponsor, APSA Penang Organization, Kepala Batas Parliamentary Service Center, SoCE of USM, and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Datuk Haji Ahmad Badawi on 11 October 2023. Around 307 trainees, including 20 trainers, 300 students, and 7 teachers from Datuk Haji Ahmad Badawi National SecondarySchool (SMKDHAB), took part in this program. The workshop focused on three topics, including effective microorganisms, water filter columns, and noise measurement (smartphone application). The Program's Chief Trainer, Dr. Herni binti Halim, gave a briefing based on the module that had been prepared. The briefing was enlivened with a simultaneous demonstration event through a display on the main screen regarding the steps to prepare the materials for the three topics by Dr. Nurul Hana MokhtarKamal and Dr. Dianah Mazlan. Then, the students performed the demonstrated activities in groups. Each group consisted of 15 students and was led by a coach. The atmosphere was very lively and the students were enthusiastic and had fun in addition to being able to learn new knowledge of environmental care when this activity was carried out. At its climax, a water filter column competition that can filter the clearest water was held between 20 groups. Water clarity was tested using a turbidity meter and Group 14 led by Coach Dr. Rosnani Alkarimiah won the competition with the lowest turbidity reading of1.15. The prize-giving ceremony for the 5 best place winners from 20 groups was completed by the Program Director, Prof. Ir. Dr. Taksiah A. Majid, and Teacher Mohd Hamdi bin Mohd Yusof, SMKDHAB CoCurriculum Senior Assistant. It is hoped that the module produced can be applied to other schools to foster interest in STEM and the importance of caring fortheEnvironment. SoCE @ 30


Research collaboration The SoCE received a visit from a delegation comprising representatives from the Technical Services Division of Jabatan Mineral dan Geosains (JMG) Malaysia and Universiti Sultan Azlan Shah (USAS) for collaborative discussions between the institutions. The visit was led by the Senior Director of the Technical Services Division in Perak, Dato' Ir. Ahmad Zukni bin Ahmad Khalil, and PM Dr. Anas bin Md Yusuf, the Deputy ViceChancellor for Administration and Finance at USAS. SoCE was represented by the Deputy Dean of Research, Innovation, and Industry - Community Network, Dr. Mustafasanie M. Yussof, and Ts. Dr. Md. Sayuti Ishak. It is hoped that the collaboration between SoCE, JMG, and USAS will be strengthened to ensure sustained engagement between government agencies and other institutions alongside SoCE. The Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and USM have partnered to hold two major activities, the ITBUSM International Joint Workshop and International Student Inbound Programme, on 15th to 21st March, 2023. The workshop focused on regional issues related to sustainability, a crucial aspect of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The event also serves as a kick-off meeting for a collaborative lecture between USM and ITB on global issues. The lectures featured various modules, allowing students and academicians from both institutions to discuss innovations for sustainable development goals and joint regional acceleration strategies between Indonesia and Malaysia. The lecture also features Research Based Learning (RBL) from various groups, each with ITB and USM representatives. The students who attended this course received 2 units of credit transfer. ALUMNI SUCESSFUL STORIES Muhamad Syahmi Bin Azhar, PPKA Alumnus (Batch 2017/2018), clinched FIRST PRIZE in Structural BIM Modeller category at "The Autodesk-JKR Asean Innovation & BIM Awards”. ALUMNI SoCE READ MORE In a dynamic display of collaboration and support, the SoCE engages its alumni through diverse initiatives in 2023. Noteworthy among these is the International Alumni Guest Lecture Series, featuring esteemed speakers like Dr. Wessam Al Madhoun and Mr. Gey Eng Keat, who share insights on sustainability and ground improvements, respectively. Other alumni such as Ir Foong Choon Who, Darren Thoon Khin Khuan, Mrs. Nor Amira Syakira and Mr. Hor Chun Yuen also excitedly shared their experience and expertise to the future engineers of SoCE. These collective efforts underscore the robust relationship between the SoCE and its alumni, fostering a platform for learning, collaboration, and philanthropy.
