Preview, Ask, Read,
and Summarize

PARSis a simple reading
strategy that helps students

actively process and
remember information they

are reading

P-Preview

The ‘P’ in PARS stands for Preview
the chapter, which is the first step
you will do when you are using this
trick. You will preview the chapter
to identify main ideas by scanning it
and reading some of the main
points in the chapter, such as the

introductory statement, the
headings, looking at some of the
graphic aids, and reading the
chapter summary. Then you will
identify the main ideas of the
chapter from what youpreviewed.

A-Ask

The second step in PARS is the ‘A, ’
which stands for Ask.

You’re going to ask questions
related to the chapter’s main
ideas you discovered when you
were previewing. The question
gives students specific idea to look
for while reading. Keeping a

question in mind can
help maintain concentration on

the reading's focus; greater
concentration can then lead to
improved comprehension and

efficiency.

R-READ

The third step in PARS is Read the
chapter. While you are reading the
chapter, you are going to be looking
for the answers to the questions you
asked about the main ideas in the
chapter. It is good to underline or
take notes on information related to

the question, as well as other
information that seems important,

relevant, and interesting.

S-SUMMARIZE

The last step in PARS is the ‘S, ’ which
stands for Summarize. After reading
the chapter and answering all your

questions about the
main ideas, you will summarize the

main ideas in a few sentences.
Summarization is a brief statement
or set of statement used to show

how a reader has condensed
information to get to the central

message of a larger chunk of
information
