Dear Parents and Carers, Welcome to our September Newsletter. Session 2023/24 is well underway and it is a joy to welcome your children in each day. You will know from both previous correspondence and hearing from your children that Numeracy and Mathematics is a priority within our School Improvement Plan here at St Anthony’s. Already this month, some classes have shared their learning with myself, Mrs Kerr and Mr Burns, and all teachers have participated in moderation tasks with staff from St John’s P.S. and St Winning’s P.S. These activities all contribute to our progress in learning and teaching in Numeracy and Mathematics. As ever, please get in touch if you have any questions. Kind regards, Shirley May Carr Family Movie Night On Thursday 7th September, we held our first Family Movie Night in school this session. Families were able to watch the live animated version of Lady and The Tramp. It was great to see so many attend and share this experience with friends and families. We will host more family nights soon so please keep your eyes peeled for more information. St Anthony's September 2023 Newsletter FLT STEM LEADERS Jenny Lewis, our Family Learning Team Worker, has been busy this term with P5 pupils who are working towards their Young STEM Leader Award. Last week, we were ‘invaded’ by robots made as part of a home learning task. What an inventive group of young people! MOVE AND IMPROVE Over the last few weeks, P7 classes have been undertaking Move and Improve training led by Chris Hayes, our Active Schools Co-ordinator. The purpose of these sessions is to give pupils the skills and confidence to help lead sports training within the school. These photographs certainly show great collaboration and teamwork. TRAILBLAZERS Our Trailblazers project continues with many of our local lamp posts having wraparounds on them. The QR codes displayed on these can be scanned by mobile phones and take pupils to a question or fact about road safety. These are updated regularly. The purpose of this project is to encourage pupils to travel to school in a healthier way if they can. It has been great to see so many children walking, cycling and scooting to school and we hope to see this continue to build. GOLDEN TABLES We are sure you have heard all about our Golden Tables! Every Friday, pupils who receive a Star of the Week, Value of the Week or Playground Star certificate earn a seat at the Golden Table for lunch. Meals are served on golden charger plates and drinks are served in golden goblets. House Captains and Vice Captains hone their skills in hospitality by helping serve drinks. This treat certainly causes great excitement for our pupils! CLIMATE READY CLASSROOM On Thursday 14th September, P6M and P6A took part in Climate Ready Classroom activities. These lessons, in collaboration with Keep Scotland Beautiful and WOSDEC, provided all P6 pupils in North Ayrshire the chance to participate in a day of online climate workshops. Both classes had an amazing time and are now working on a Climate Action Plan which will be taken forward by our Pupil Councils. The Pope Francis Faith Award is an award of the Bishops' Conference of Scotland, designed to help children to show signs of love in their daily lives and to be active members of their local Church. Canon Martin and Mrs Carr took them through the background to the Sacraments, the pupil booklets and dates. Please keep all pupils in your prayers.
MUNCHING MONDAY Munching Monday is a weekly initiative where we encourage all in our school community to eat healthy snacks at break. We calculate the percentage of pupils eating healthy snacks in each class and the class with the highest percentage wins the coveted Glass Apple! Last session, our P1 classes were regular winners. Please help support this endeavour, not just on Mondays but every day of the week! ONCE A WEEK TAKE A PEEK Head lice are a common problem, particularly in children. They can live in hair for a long time if not treated and can be irritating and frustrating to deal with. They are very small whitish or grey-brown insects that range from the size of a pinhead to the size of a sesame seed. The only way to be sure someone has head lice is to find a live louse by combing their hair with a special fine-toothed comb. This is called detection combing. Please take the time each week to check your family members’ hair for head lice.
