AND YOU

Today’s message board topic: What’s your favourite music? And your favourite way to listen?
7

I’m into rock music. My favourite groups are Mayday Parade and Red Hot Chili
Peppers. They’re both famous American bands. I listen to music all the time
when I’m at home and when I walk to school. I don’t listen to it when
I’m in lessons, of course! I download a lot of music, but I’ve got a record
player and a collection of vinyl records, too. They’re old-fashioned, but
they’re cool. I like the ones in bright colours best! Adriano

I usually wear my headphones and listen to tracks on my mobile. I’ve
got new green headphones. They’re big, but they aren’t expensive. My
sister loves One Direction and she goes to a lot of their concerts, but
I don’t like them. She likes pop music and I prefer hip hop. The Black 8
Eyed Peas are really good, but Brazilian hip hop is the best. Jessica

I enjoy dance music and I love breakdancing. I’m not very good, but
it’s fun. I use online music sites and I watch a lot of music videos on my
phone. I copy dance moves from friends or from videos. I practise in my
room and I want to be in a video one day. My favourite track ever is Happy
by Pharrell Williams. I think the music video is great. It’s a really happy
song and I always dance when I hear it! Kolya

In this month’s photo competition, we’re looking for the best photos of birthday

chocolates to everyone in their class. Some traditions are messy. For example, in

In my photo, my parents are holding my arms and legs. They’re
lifting me up in the air thirteen times and then ‘bumping’ me down

luck. It’s called ‘the bumps’. It’s fun, but it’s a bit dangerous!

In my birthday photo, my brother isn’t hitting me, he’s pulling
my ear twelve times for my twelfth birthday. It looks painful,
but it doesn’t hurt. Ear-pulling is a tradition here, and they
do the same thing in other countries, too. My dad says that in
Hungary they add a special birthday wish: ‘Live so long that
your ears reach your ankles!’ Gonzalo, Argentina

There are some wonderful places in the world and they need our help. That’s why the 2
international organization UNESCO protects and preserves them as World Heritage Sites.

A woman is holding a torch and a tablet. The woman is 46 m tall and, at 204 tonnes,
she is much heavier than a normal person. Meet the Statue of Liberty, a gift from France
to the USA. She stands in New York harbour and welcomes visitors to America.
2 There are pyramids from Mexico to India, but the Great Pyramid in Giza, Egypt, is
special. At 137 m, it’s taller than the Statue of Liberty. The Great Pyramid is more
famous than other Egyptian pyramids – but they are all worth a visit!

3 Machu Picchu is an Inca city in the mountains of Peru, over 500 km from the capital 3
city Lima. It isn’t as old as Ancient Rome, but it’s over 500 years old. Every year,
about 1,000,000 tourists travel there and visit its palaces and squares.
6
4 In the centre of Rome, Italy you can see an ancient Roman stadium. The Colosseum
is bigger than many modern stadiums. Just imagine it when it was new, nearly 2,000
years ago with its gladiators and wild animals and 50,000 people in the crowd.
5
The Lascaux Caves have got beautiful paintings of animals on their walls. And
they are over 17,300 years old! The Lascaux Caves are in the South West of France.
Unfortunately you can’t go inside. Carbon dioxide from visitors damages the paintings. 4

What is special about your town or village? Maybe it
hasn’t got any big tourist attractions, but many places
have other, little things which make them interesting,
both for tourists and for the people who live there.
For example, Exeter in England has the narrowest street
in the UK – Parliament Street. It’s only 64 cm wide at 5
one point. However, Reutlingen in Germany has the
narrowest street in the world. Spreuerhofstraße is only
50 cm at the widest point and 31 cm at the narrowest
point. Visitors are careful because they don’t want to
get stuck!
A very long or short name can also make a place
special. The shortest place names in the world are just
one letter long! There are villages in Norway, Sweden
and Denmark called Å and a river in Russia called .
Long place names are popular with tourists, too. Many
visitors have their photo taken next to the UK’s longest
place name. It’s a village in Wales called
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch!

But that isn’t the longest place name in the world. That
is a mountain in New Zealand. It’s eighty-five letters 6
long, and it holds the record for the longest place name.

The people of Puerto Vallarta in Mexico and Wrocław
in Poland also live in special places because of the
colour of the buildings. Most homes around the world
are grey and cream, pale yellow, brown or white, but
Wrocław and Puerto Vallarta have some of the most
colourful buildings in the world. What do you think?
So, next time you’re out in your town, look around
carefully. You may find some very special places.
