CEFGA 2018 Annual Report

Building Careers for 25 Years

BUILDING CAREERS FOR

YEARS
2018 ANNUAL REPORT

We put people to work in the construction industry.
We exist to create Success Stories. They are “The Why”
that drives CEFGA and all that we do as an organization.

CEFGA knows the skilled labor shortage facing our industry
requires both short-term and long-term solutions. We know
construction companies need good, quality workers to fill jobs
today and a long-term, sustainable talent pipeline for tomorrow.

For construction companies who need reliable, productive workers, and for companies
seeking to build a sustainable workforce, CEFGA provides entry-level employees today
and a pipeline of future talent for tomorrow.

A Message from our

PRESIDENT & CEO

I recently celebrated my 20th year with CEFGA. What an honor to serve this organization and the
construction industry for two decades! As I reflect back on these 20 years, there is one question I asked
myself more than any other. “Is CEFGA a trade association-type organization providing benefit to our members
in the form of new, trained construction workers; or are we a true nonprofit, philanthropic organization providing
training, credentials and career opportunities to people across Georgia?”

It took me awhile, but I finally realized the answer is “YES to both!” We provide new, trained construction workers
for the construction industry AND we provide training and career opportunities for people throughout Georgia.

We like to say at CEFGA that we have two primary clients: Our students and our employers. This becomes
obvious when you look at our programs.

Our Construction Ready Program, for example, takes adults aged 18+ and quickly
prepares them for an entry level career in the construction industry. This program,
started in partnership with The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation and a group of
leading construction companies in metro Atlanta, has expanded rapidly over the last
four years. To date, we’ve trained and placed 745 into full-time careers. Think about
that. Seven-hundred and forty-five individuals and families changed forever in the
form of meaningful, full-time employment. These individuals were placed with 185
different companies; again, 185 companies positively impacted through the addition
of trained, credentialed and eager new workers.

Another program we are extremely proud of is our CareerExpo and SkillsUSA
State Championships event, held in the spring of each year. Started 14 years ago
in Gwinnett County, this event attracts thousands of young people from around
the state. These students are eager to learn about careers in construction and
to demonstrate the skills they’ve acquired throughout the year by competing in
the SkillsUSA Georgia State Championships. In 14 years, CEFGA and our industry
partners have hosted more than 50,000 students at our CareerExpo events. Again,
50,000+ lives positively impacted with industry connections, information and
knowledge about careers in construction.

As we look ahead to the next 20 years, I am optimistic that these programs, under the leadership of Jamie Buck
and Tina Robison, will continue to expand and positively impact thousands more lives throughout Georgia.

One of the programs with the greatest potential at CEFGA is our K12 Pipeline, led by Zach Fields. Through our K12
Pipeline, Zach and his team are working with more than 50 NCCER-certified high school construction programs
throughout Georgia. Enrolled in these programs are 6,000+ high school students being trained in some of the
most in-demand construction trades, including electrical, heating and air, carpentry, masonry, plumbing, welding
and sheet metal. CEFGA’s K12 Pipeline, supported by construction companies throughout Georgia, has the
potential to be the most powerful talent pipeline in our state and a model for states around the country.

All of us at CEFGA are thankful for the opportunity to serve our clients - the construction companies and people
who build Georgia today and our students, the people who will build Georgia tomorrow.

CONSTRUCTION READY AT BUILD COBB:

It was fall of 2017 and Pcolya Crumby, an elementary school teacher, was ready for a change.
Pcolya, who studied forensic science in college and worked as a probation officer prior to
becoming a school teacher, saw a Construction Ready brochure and decided to investigate
further. Two months later, Pcolya graduated from Construction Ready and was hired by PSG
Construction as a general laborer. Right from the start, she impressed PSG management
with her work ethic and attention to detail and soon was promoted to a foreman role. A
month later, she was offered a position as safety officer, complete with paid training for
OSHA 30 certification.. “This program changed my life,” she continues. “The entire program,
the way it’s put together, it’s meant for success. If you just take advantage of what they give
you, you will skyrocket.”

Pcolya Crumby | PSG Construction | Construction Ready at Build Cobb Graduate

CONSTRUCTION READY AT AEROTROPOLIS:

Jahmal Johnson graduated from Construction Ready in October 2016 and went to work for
Forest Park-based Mid-South Roof Systems. Jahmal had previously held a succession of jobs
that included stripping and waxing floors, building office cubicles, and working for an uncle’s
furniture business. But he wasn’t finding satisfaction in his work, and he was wanting to plan
for his future. “Construction Ready gave me the opportunity to earn a lot more money, to be
able to save. I have a career, not just a job. And I feel important, like I’m worth something.”
Through Construction Ready, Jahmal found his sweet spot, the thing he was seemingly
made to do. And in today’s thriving economy, the industry needed him. The jobs are there for
the taking and CEFGA is leading the way in connecting people to them.

Jahmal Johnson | Mid-South Roof Systems | Construction Ready at Aerotropolis Graduate

CONSTRUCTION READY AT TCWFI
(THE CENTER FOR WORKING FAMILIES):

When Alfred learned about CEFGA’s Construction Ready Program, he was looking for a new
path after working a long line of fast-food jobs. When he graduated in late 2017, he received
a job offer from Baldwin Paving Company on a labor crew. Since Alfred already held a Class
A CDL license, after five months, he was given the keys to a flatbed dump truck, which he
uses to assist crews by moving materials and debris on job sites. Meanwhile he continues
his education by attending Atlanta Area Tech. Alfred is grateful to CEFGA for helping him
change direction. He says, “In Construction Ready, they help you understand that you are
entering the first stage of a career. If you just want a job, then this program isn’t for you.”

Alfred Murphy | Baldwin Paving Company | Construction Ready at TCWFI Graduate

CONSTRUCTION READY AT WESTSIDE WORKS:

When Miketa Grant enrolled in Construction Ready in November 2016, most of her prior work
experience was as a leasing agent in an apartment complex. At the time, she was a stay-at-
home mom (three children, including 11-year-old twins). She graduated with a job offer from
Marek Interior Systems, as a general laborer. She quickly realized she wanted to do more. “I
didn’t want to just sweep and throw trash away,” she recalls, “so I started doing other things
– just putting myself out there as someone who works hard. If you don’t take the initiative,
nobody else will.” Her supervisors have recognized her efforts. “Construction Ready gave
me a trade that nobody can ever take from me,” she adds. “Anybody who’s thinking about a
new career should give Construction Ready a chance, because it is definitely a life changer.”

K12 PIPELINE AT MAXWELL HIGH SCHOOL OF TECHNOLOGY

As a high school junior, Courtney Moser was unsure of her next move. She decided to enroll
in the welding program at Maxwell High School of Technology and that’s when everything
changed for her. Courtney joined SkillsUSA and honed her skills in the metals program
earning nationally recognized NCCER Core and Level 1 Welding Certifications. This work
culminated in a project that showcased the metal working skills she had developed. Fast
forward to March 2016 and that project would be judged the best in the state of Georgia.
Courtney describes the experience as, “the best thing that has ever happened to me!” As a
result, she received and accepted a full-tuition scholarship to Tulsa Welding School. Courtney
was then able to land a job that she loves and get “paid for her passion” as a welder at
Kubota. She’s now on track to achieve her goal of becoming a lead welder.

TECHNICAL COLLEGE

Tanner Boyd was a student at Georgia Northwestern Technical College, pursuing a
degree in Construction Management, when he attended the 2016 CEFGA CareerExpo and
SkillsUSA State Championships to compete in the Teamworks competition. Tanner’s positive
attitude and work ethic helped propel his team to a first-place finish and on to the national
competition. Tanner made a connection with C.W. Matthews at the CEFGA CareerExpo that
put him in the career of his dreams. After just 6 months in the field, Tanner was promoted
to Project Engineer over multiple projects. Tanner’s story illustrates that the construction
industry has a place for everyone whether right out of high school or those that choose to
continue their craft education at the post-secondary level. Young leaders demonstrating
work-ethic and positive attitudes are accelerating into rewarding career paths with guidance,
support, and numerous opportunities for advancement.

Support For The K12 Pipeline

The partnership between CEFGA and Georgia Work-Based Learning bridges the gap between the construction industry and career-
related education. Thanks to CEFGA, our teachers have participated in eye-opening and informative externships, our students have
been exposed to potential careers, and Work-Based Learning placements have been created. This is a true partnership that has and
will continue to have a positive impact on economic development in Georgia. I can see other states using a similar model because,
simply put, it works!
Christina Hinz | CTAE Supervisor/Work-Based Learning Coordinator | Henry County Schools

CEFGA is the one pushing the collaboration between industry and education. They do a great job introducing the trades to the
schools and encouraging industry to get involved in the classrooms with the construction teachers, making sure that the teachers
have the resources they need to teach those specific trades.
Rod Owen | C.C. Owen Tile Company

CEFGA was instrumental in helping to reestablish our construction program at Harris County High School. With their involvement, we
were able to recruit support from business, industry, and the community and now we are now off and ‘building’.

CEFGA’s Impact in Connecting
Construction Industry Leaders
with Tomorrow’s Workforce

At the 2018 CEFGA CareerExpo and SkillsUSA State Championships on March 22-23, all signs
pointed to a bright outlook for the future of Georgia’s construction industry. On paper alone,
the numbers were encouraging: 8,246 total attendees—a new event record—including 5,534
students, 1,158 influencers (teachers, parents, counselors and school administrators) and
1,554 industry volunteers, exhibitors and other guests.

And on the Georgia International Convention Center floor, the energy was palpable as those
thousands of students visited 18 industry “Worlds,” and more than 400 high school and
technical college students competed in 20+ SkillsUSA contests. The Worlds included three
industries represented for the first time at the Expo: Hand & Power Tools, Fire Protection
and Roofing. The latter was perhaps the most visible of all 18, thanks to a towering scaffold
with an 8/12-pitch roof segment for students to climb.

CEFGA’s three-pronged strategy to workforce development—CareerExpo, Construction Ready
training for adults and K12 Pipeline for students—is building a sustainable talent pool for the
construction industry. A fourth component, the CEFGA Connect initiative debuted during the
Expo and links students directly with employers. All four work hand in hand toward fulfilling
CEFGA’s mission of “Building Opportunities for Georgia.”

With Georgia ranking as the leading state in which to do business for five years running,
job opportunities continue to grow, as does the need for a skilled construction workforce.
And with so many students and influencers gathered in one location for the CareerExpo,
employers recognize the event as a valuable investment toward meeting that need.

CEFGA recognizes that raising awareness about opportunities in construction is critical
to Georgia’s economic future. Schools are fertile ground for doing so; Georgia now has 149
high school construction programs, with more than 17,000 students enrolled in them.

Support For CareerExpo

CareerExpo was one of the best field trips that I ever took with my students. The students did not want to leave the event!
LaShonda Mills | Ridgeview High School Graduation Coach

CEFGA is the vital link between high schools, SkillsUSA and industry. They’ve played a vital role in putting on the CareerExpo and
SkillsUSA State Championships. It would not be what it is today without them—by any stretch of the imagination.
Matt Hoyman | Holder Construction Project Manager | Technical Co-chair of the SkillsUSA TeamWorks Competition

Thank you for providing such an amazing opportunity for our construction club students to be a part of something so awesome.
The day at the CareerExpo was life-changing for our students as it exposed them to a number of opportunities they could consider as
they move toward adulthood. Together, we can make a great impact on the future lives of all of our students. What this event taught
me is we must not only seek personalized learning opportunities for our students in the classroom, but also consider how to provide
‘personalized career pathways’ for our students so they can have ‘choice’ in what their future looks like for them!

Congratulations to the winners of the Georgia SkillsUSA State Championships! Winners in Atlanta advanced to the national SkillsUSA
Championships in Louisville, Kentucky in June. That said, the biggest victories went to any competitor who recognized the value of
the hands-on experience they gained and the power of networking with the industry representatives they met.
