Inducing
Snowfall via
Cloud Seeding

Written by Mohammad Ahmed Khan

Cloud seeding, in simple terms, is a process through which
humans have artificially induced precipitation. The
methodology, procedure, and surprising results will be shared
with you in this article.

It is necessary to plan out a series of steps to enhance cloud
seeding and maximize its benefits. Cloud seeding is conducted
using aircraft and drones that carry seeding agents inside
pyrotechnic flares. Several seeding agents contain potassium
chloride as well as magnesium, however, the most effective are
dry ice, silver iodide, and sodium chloride. Upon releasing these
salts into the clouds, they rapidly attract moisture, causing
droplets to collide against each other and form droplets of
great size. The seeding agents modify the structure of clouds
and significantly increase the chances of water droplets
condensing, making precipitation more likely.

Numerous projects on cloud seeding have been initiated since
1946; initial experiments were conducted by American chemist
and meteorologist Vincent J. Schaefer, who was a self-taught
chemist and first arrived at the idea of cloud seeding. Cloud
seeding experiments have dated back to the 1940s, when
positive feedback was scarce. In contrast to the times of the
past when research heavily depended on theory, technological
research can now assure scientists of much more productive
and significantly advantageous outcomes of cloud seeding.

Cloud seeding has also supported the ecosystem in many ways. Snow
induced by cloud seeding is not only often utilized as an insulating layer
for animals and plants in harshly cold climates for them to survive but
also produces more run-off water supply during the springtime for
Hydroelectric power, hence easing energy crises. Furthermore, tourism
increases at an exponential rate on account of recreational waters and
pleasant weather, and cloud seeding has shown potential solutions to
droughts by creating freshwater resources. So far, preliminary tests seem
to be promising.

In particular, the cloud seeding tests in Wyoming, where the snowpack is
the primary source of water to the locals, resulted in a remarkable rise of
snowfall in the area from 5 to 15% - enough water needed for
sustenance of the locals and thus, a significant way to utilize cloud water
content in accordance with human requirements and predictions. In this
manner, the benefits of rain and snow can be amplified.

Semi-Conductor Global Chip Shortage

By Amin Chaudhry and Shahzad Zaman

Capital markets have rewarded the semiconductor industry’s
surging profitability, with companies in this sector delivering an
annual average of 25% in total returns to shareholders from
the end of 2015 to the end of 2019. Last year, shareholders
saw even higher returns, averaging 50% per annum, as
consumers and businesses upped their purchases of digital
equipment of all kinds, partly in response to the COVID-19
pandemic. The question is whether the semiconductor industry
can continue delivering such strong returns, especially as the
pandemic continues to create uncertainties about demand
patterns, supply chains and other issues.

Film-Making &
Photography
Competition for
O' Levels

Art at LGS Defence has always been celebrated
through consistent competitions allowing students to
express themselves to the greatest extent. In line with
that philosophy, students of Grade 9 and 10 created 2
competitions for Film-Making and Photography for
O' Levels.

The topic for both was open-agenda to see how
creative students can be with their work.

Students participated in the photography The Grammarian | Issue 02
competition - battling to see who would come out on
top.

Contestants were free to send in photographs of any
theme; as long as they were the ones who pressed the
shutter button. This way, students would not be
inhibited in the creative process and would be able to
freely express themselves.

Students took some amazing photos which showed
humor, innovation and a great deal of story telling.

Photography is a way many find to express
themselves without any limitations. Students were
allowed to spread their wings as much as they
wanted. Here are some of the brilliant photos
submitted:

NFT Designing The Grammarian | Issue 02

Students were also tasked to create their own NFTs!

NFTs, Non-Fungible Tokens are what are deemed as
the "Currency of the Future" and so, students sent in
their best drawings, to see whom would work best as
an NFT.

If the world is indeed moving towards an all-digital
ecosystem, with ambitious projects like The
Metaverse, it is imperative that the adults of
tomorrow keep up.

Our students displayed excellent enthusiasm and
drew some excellent drawings. Creativity, originality,
cleverness and ingenuity shown bright in all
submissions.

Here are some of the alluring submissions:

LGS Talks on NFTs!

Danyal Farooq, Omar Sheikh, Danyal Hassan,
Muhammad Ahmed Khan, Hariz Zoran and
Ayan Anas from Grade 9 participated in the
first annual LGS Talks of 2022.

The boys prepared their talks on NFTs, under
the inquiry theme "How we express ourselves".
Comprehensive speeches on the topic were
delivered, alongside an interactive QnA session
by the audience.
