Introduction
The Battle of Uhud is one of the important battles in the
Muslim history. This battle took place in the middle of the
month of Sya'ban in the third year of Hijrah. It took place
around the vicinity of Mount Uhud (Jabal Uhud). The battle
was between 1000 Muslims and 3000 Quraisy troops. The
Muslims were headed by Rasulullah s.a.w. himself and the
Quraisy were headed by Abu Sufyan. During this battle, 300 of
the 1000 Muslim troops retreated and discontinued their
participation. This group was led by Abdullah bin Ubai who
was one of the munafiq (hypocrites).
Reasons leading to The Battle
The Quraisy people in Makkah were
ashamed of their defeat in the battle of Badr.
Hence, they wanted to seek revenge and
regain their honour. Abu Sufyan hence
gathered 3000 men among the Quraisy,
made up of men from the tribes of Quraisy,
al-Harith, al-Huan, al-Mustaqil and 100 men
from the Thaqif tribe.
Many among those men also wanted to avenge the deaths of their relatives
in the Battle of Badr. For example, Khalid al-Walid wanted to avenge the
death of his father, al-Walid and Ikrimah wanted to avenge the death of his
father, Abu Jahal. Apart from that, they were worried for the safety of the
caravans which frequently passed that by Madinah on their way to North
Arabia. They were also afraid that they would suffer economically as long as
the Muslims were in control in Madinah. Hence, they wanted to drive the
Muslims out of Madinah completely. At the same time, the Quraisy people in
Makkah were worried about the gaining strength and influence of Islam.
This was because they did not want to have any new power to rise in Hijaz
(Straits of Arabia). As such, they did their best to hinder Islam from getting
stronger The Quraisy was also known for their arrogance. They could not
accept the defeat that they suffered in the previous battle and would do
anything to avenge that defeat.
Events during The Battle
The area surrounding Mount Uhud was chosen by Prophet
Muhammad s.a.w. as the battlefield this time. Rasulullah s.a.w. placed
a team of 50 competent archers at the slopes of Mount Uhud, led by
Abdullah bin Jubair. He ordered them to stay on the slopes
regardless of wether they win or lose. This was a great strategy by
Rasululah s.a.w. Once the battle began, the Muslims fought driven by
the strong faith in them.
They fought hard till the enemies fled from the battlefield leaving
behind some spoils of war.
When that happened, the Muslims thought that the battle
had ended as the enemies had fled the battlefield. Hence,
the Muslim troops, including the archers went over to grab
the spoils of war that were left behind. Unknowingly, Khalid
al-Walid took the opportunity to conquer the fortress left
behind by the Muslims with his troop of horsemen. The
attack by Khalid al-Walid had caused the Muslims to run
away. As a result, 70 Muslim troops were martyred,
including the Prophet's uncle. Hamzah bin Abdul Mutalib,
who was killed by a slave by the name of Wahsyi from the
Habsyah clan. With that. the Muslims lost the battle.
Effects of The Battle
The defeat in this battle had serious repercussions on the Muslims. The
Arab tribes began to look down on the Muslims. Some of them wished
to return to the Quraisy as they have lost their trust in the Muslims.
They also began killing the Muslims as they wished, without any fear.
The Muslims were also jeered and abused by the Jews and hypocrites
who were in Madinah at that time. However, the Muslims were not
disheartened by the defeat. Instead, they learnt a lesson from what had
happend and was determined to always adhere to their leader's orders
in the future.
Importance of The Battle
It offered a lot to the Muslims to learn from their mistakes
Muslims got cautious and fought well till the end
Gave the lesson that the instructions of Prophet Muhammad must
never be neglected
Muslims came to know about the real face of Jews of Madinah of
that time
Learned the importance of strategic planning in the field of battle
It proved to be a blessing to the Muslims that they became aware
of the Jews reality
It showed the leadership qualities of the Prophet Muhammad
Impact of The Battle
Several tribes broke away their alliance with Prophet
Events like 'Bir Mauna' started taking place, in which Muslims
were killed
Muslims now started being more united, disciplined and loyal
They became more determined and sincere towards Islam and
Prophet
They got to know that lack of discipline, obedience and greed
caused their defeat
In future wars they never disobeyed Prophet again
What Muslims learned from The
Battle
They could not expect to win every battle
They should consult opinions of their subordinates
Muslims should always obey Allah and His Prophet's
teachings
They should not be greedy
They learn that Allah supports Muslims as long as they
support Him
When Muslims fight, they should fight for their faith,
defending it from forces who which were trying to crush it
