A Message from ECCF

This time each year, we pause to reflect on what we’ve
accomplished together in the last 12 months. What we hope for –
what every Community Foundation hopes for – is solid progress
towards fulfilling our mission. This requires growth, not just in
assets (though this year we’ve nearly doubled ours), but growth
in philanthropic services to support our donors, in the number of
charitable funds we manage, in the grants we award to nonprofits
and growth in the impact we are having in our communities.

Our work will never be done – community foundations are
organized to operate in perpetuity – but we are proud to say that
in 2016, Essex County Community Foundation made material
progress on these goals and more. Not only did we launch Impact
Essex County – our new community leadership initiative focused
on tackling Essex County’s greatest challenges – but we also
implemented the DonorCentral portal, raised awareness for the
Foundation with record engagement at our Celebration breakfast in
May, and mounted another successful annual Institute for Trustees,
all critical steps in sustaining our trajectory of growth and improving
the lives of those who need us most.

Throughout the pages of this annual report, you’ll find the evidence
of the progress we made this year. We also hope you’ll be inspired
to help us keep it going. Essex County Community Foundation is
forever grateful for your support and we look forward to working
with you to increase philanthropy’s impact in Essex County.

Sincerely,

GROWING Our Assets

With 20 new funds established in 2016, ECCF
experienced strong growth in managed assets over
the year. These new funds support very narrow
interests such as independent and charter schools to
wide-ranging interests such as health, education and
opioid crisis intervention. Thanks to these new funds
entrusted to ECCF, along with sound investments of
existing funds, ECCF grew assets under management
by nearly 45 percent.
