Objective of the lesson—Understand the importance of teeth, distinguish between the different types of
teeth, learn the structure of tooth, how to take care of teeth and practice good eating habits.
3. Learning outcome :
Children will be able to-
1. Understand microbes so they feel empowered to protect themselves by eating well and doing
simple things like washing hands to keep healthier.
2. Realize the importance of oral hygiene
3. Describe the different kinds of teeth and draw them too
4. Understand the functions of teeth
Timeline Methodology
Week II 1. Teacher will introduce the topic by doing a recap of Digestion.
(April) Lead questions:
Which is the main organ related to digestion?
Children will give answer as teeth.
Have you observed your teeth in front of a mirror?
Do they all look alike?
Can you imagine how you would look without your teeth?
How do teeth help us?
The topic of teeth will be introduced. To begin with teacher will
discuss about the different uses of teeth like they give shape to our
face, makes our speech clear, help in cutting, biting, chewing grinding
etc.
2. Kinds of teeth and its functions will be explained.
Group and share
Look in the mirror and observe your teeth. They all look different. Eat
an apple. Which teeth did you use to bite it? If you had to eat a
chapatti which teeth would you have used?
Different kinds of teeth will be explained. Kinds of teeth like incisors,
Canines, premolars, molars will be taught along with their functions
followed by smart board explanation.
3. Activity I
A table will be drawn on the black board in which teacher will write
the names of different kinds of teeth. A child will be called forward
And will be asked to count the number of
Incisors in his mouth and fill in the table. Similarly the number of
canines, premolars and molars will also be written on the black board.
Teacher will also bring some models of teeth to the class and explain
the different kinds of teeth.
Activity II
Teacher will arrange some items on the table like toffee, sugarcane,
apple, etc. Children will be divided into groups and one child from
each group will come forward, pick up an item, identify it and explain
which teeth he will be using in eating that particular item.

3. Now teacher will introduce the term nutrients as the substances
which provide nourishment to the body.
The five kinds of nutrients carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and
minerals, roughage and water (Protective food, body building food,
energy giving food) will be explained with the help of examples.
4.Activity I
Children will write down some food items which they had in
Week II&III breakfast/ lunch in the school. They will classify the food items into
(March) protective, energy giving and body building food. Children will discuss
about the food groups in their list.
Video based on different kinds of nutrients.
Week IV &V 1. Group& share (discussion)
(March) Puneet’s teacher gave him glucose after he ran in the marathon race.
Why do you think he did it? Has anyone in your family been given a
glucose drip?
Glucose gives instant energy.
Teacher will explain about the various types of nutrients and their
importance thereby relating it to balanced diet.
2. The importance of water and roughage will also be explained.
Teacher will give examples like when they eat and orange slice and
chew the fibre like thing which is left behind in their mouth is
roughage.
3. Children will make a mind map on food in their note books followed
by question and answers.
4.Activity II
Children will bring items from home like Chips, Cookie, carrot,
ground nut and apple. Cut a brown paper bag into squares. Label the
square with the name of the food. Rub each food item on the paper.
Let it dry. Hold it up to the light. The foods which have greasy mark
or stain on the paper contains a lot of fat or oils.
Home work- Draw examples of different food groups in your note
book.

Talk with your grandparents and find out what they ate and what
work they did when they were of your age. Compare it with your diet.
Do you eat more of homemade food or junk food? Which is better for
health?
Brainstorming about the different organ systems of our body and
their organs will be done by the teacher
To introduce the topic teacher will ask some general questions like
1. Which is your favourite food? Children will give answers like
noodles, pizza, ice cream etc.
2. What happens to the food you are eating?
They go to our stomach and get digested.
3. What is digestion?
Breaking down of food into smaller particles is called digestion.
In this way teacher will brush up their previous knowledge about
digestion.

How do you know that you are hungry?
Where do you think the food goes after you put it into your mouth?
After the discussion teacher will introduce organs of digestive system
and their functions in detail.
1. The process of digestion will be explained with the help of a torso.

Home Work- Draw a neat and labeled diagram of digestive system
1. After the topic of nutrition teacher will discuss about the two types
of food ie-raw food and cooked food. She also explains about the
advantages of cooking food like it makes food soft, tasty and easily
digestible. The disadvantages of overcooking food as it destroys the
nutrients present in the food will also be discussed.
2. Different ways of cooking food like frying, roasting, baking
steaming etc will be explained.
3. Teacher- Good nutrition also means eating well prepared food. If
the food is prepared well how does it get spoiled sometimes?
Children will give answers like if it is kept outside for a long time it
gets spoiled. The different causes of food spoilage – weather
conditions, leaving food uncovered, microbes or germs thriving on the
exposed food etc will be discussed.
Now teacher will introduce the topic of preservation with the help of a
definition. She will give examples of different preservatives used in
different food items like pickles, jam, sauce etc.
4.Teacher will explain the different methods of preserving food like
freezing, dehydration, pickling, salting, canning, vacuum packing etc.

5. Activity I
Making lemon/ mango pickle
Children bring some lemons/ mangoes to the class.
They will be divided into groups.
Recipe is given to them.
Each group collects the ingredients
Children mix the ingredients and keep it in the sun in a container.
6.Activity II – Food Festival
The whole class will be divided into groups Each group will get a set of
food items such as fried food, steamed food, raw food, baked food etc.
A food festival will be organized amongst the class and the students
will be given an opportunity to discover the variety of foods in each
category.
7. Children will make web charts in their note boos on methods of
cooking and preservation.
Home work- 1.Draw 4 methods of cooking and 4 methods of
preservation in your note book.
2. Also write different ways of preserving mangoes.
