During the height of WWII, women were not only encouraged to enter the workforce, they were deluged with propaganda to join the workforce because it was their patriotic duty. When the war was over, many women lost their jobs, and were reminded that their first responsibility was to their home and their family. On September 22, 1949, Shirley Cupp, Irma Beisel, Frances Stuckey and Mr. Hilary Bufton Jr. met in a coffee shop in downtown Kansas City to incorporate the American Business Women’s Association at a time when it was considered socially unacceptable for women to pursue a full-time career, have a girls night out or even join an association. A statement made by Mr. Bufton in the early 50s summarizes ABWA’s impact on societal norms: “In many ways, the first generation of ABWA members were the breaking tradition…Without even knowing it, I guess they were paving the way for today’s women.” While women’s opportunities and pay in the business sector have evolved, there is still work to be done. Breaking barriers for women and on behalf of women is nothing new in ABWA. We’ve been doing so since 1949! Herstoryof the ABWA

ABWA MISSION Welcome to the Innovative Women in Business 1st quarter Newsletter. I am so happy you are here. If you are a member of our chapter, THANK YOU! Your membership is appreciated. If you are thinking about joining our chapter, welcome, come as you are. We are here to help you grow personally and professionally. If you are asking yourself what makes this group different? Why should I join this group? I encourage you to attend one of our meetings or happy hours, or check out our website for details about our group. But, I would like to share with you my personal reasons for joining 4 years ago. I appreciated the education offered each month from local speakers. I am a firm believer if you aren’t learning, you aren’t growing. Then I discovered the national connection- again educational opportunities through the online portal, and networking with women from across the country. The first national conference I attended was virtual (and not the most desirable way to join a national conference for me) but the women made me feel welcomed and welcomed me into the zoom rooms as if I had been a member for years. If you are looking for a place to belong, add value and create lasting friendships and connections, Innovative Women in Business is the group for you! I want to acknowledge our Board members who tirelessly pour into the organization each month, My Vice President, Hannah Wilkes, Secretary, Charlene Overland and Treasurer, Lisa Smith- Thank you for all you do to support our organization!! And last but not least, Thank you Kim Prevost for putting together this beautiful newsletter of us- You are a powerhouse and I appreciate you so much! Sleep in Heavenly Peace · No Kid Sleeps on the Floor in Our Town! A mere twenty-three months ago The Montgomery County branch of Sleep in Heavenly Peace started in Tom Michel's garage. Over the course of the next few months, they were blessed with space through the local powerhouse team at Milstead Group (Milstead Automotive & Milstead Collision specifically). Soon after the Mission Center with the United Methodist Church granted them permanent warehouse space. The area really came through to further SHP's mission - " No Kid Sleeps On The Floor in Our Town!" From their first delivery to six children whose home had been a victim of the freeze in Willis, to their current count of 868 beds delivered in Montgomery County, SHP Moco continue to build and deliver these beds to anyone aged 3-17 years that doesn't have a bed of thedior eoswnnt. There are no other requirements. They are entirely run on private donations, with no government funding. Our team is entirely volunteers who care enough to sacrifice their time, energy and effort for children in need. For this reason IWiB has chosen them among our charities for 2023. The need, even in our great community is constant. They get bed requests daily, and estimates are that 3% of children nationwide do not have a bed of their own. In Montgomery County, that means that number is 18,000. It is a heartbreaking thing to see a child sleeping on the floor, or on a couch, or sharing a bed with their sibling. These great volunteers come in with some tools, materials, a mattress, pillow, and bedding that matches the kids favorite color - and change their world for the better. When a four year old bed recipient asks "Is this my bed forever?" and volunteers are able to answer "yes - it is your bed forever" both lives are changed for the better.. Because our volunteers are often teenagers or even younger, families can experience helping other families. Parents can show their children how to operate power tools, but also give them life lessons while helping someone else. This is a Win-Win for us all! M A R C H 2023 | V OL 6 9

The Orange Life Healthy orange-colored veggies for your health. Harumi Kobayashi Contributor Neil Tran Photographs “Vegetables are a must on diet. I suggest carrot cake, zucchini bread, and pumpkin pie” How many colors do you find in your meal? More than one or two, or even colorless? Didn't you know that based on some research, the color from vegetables and fruits can influence your health because the pigment from those natural colors is effective as an anti-cancer, for example. Due to the retinoic acid from vitamin A, that can be found in sweet potatoes and carrots. The content of vitamin B6 found in carrots and pumpkins has a role in blood cell growth and protein metabolism. Moreover, this vitamin also helps our body's immunity system in producing antibodies to fight against any diseases/illnesses. Studies show that high levels of alpha and betacarotene can decrease or reduce the mortality risk caused by cardiovascular. Money Moves w/ Stop Being a Mindless Consumer Our society is obsessed with having more, and we are constantly bombarded with consumer-driven marketing that tells us what we have right now isn’t good enough. We desire to have the best and newest product on the market with a contorted expectation that that will finally be what satisfies this need for more. Even worse, we have lost our ability to practice self-discipline, and this mindless consumption spills over into every area of our life. When we let consumerism creep in, we risk losing the opportunity for deep connection with our family and community. We lose touch with our bodies and the signals that alert us that we’ve had enough. Mindless consumption, when given the opportunity, will wreak havoc on your life and family. What is Mindless Consumption? Mindless consumption can look different in different situations. It is taking in endless amounts of information, food, or products without stopping to evaluate the situation. Often these actions are impulsive. Whether we want to feel the satisfaction of purchasing a new outfit or want to sit and scroll on our phones—these things will never fully quench our thirst for more. Disconnected from our loved ones Pollution and low-quality product production Depression and self-esteem issues Hoarding Lower life satisfaction Types of Mindless Consumption As mentioned before, there are many ways we can be mindless consumers. Mindless Eating – When you sit down to enjoy a new show or movie, do you grab your favorite snack too? While this is not necessarily a bad way to relax, you are much more prone to eat mindlessly. If this is a habit you struggle with, consider having your snack before you sit down in front of the television. Mindless Spending – Marketing is not as innocent as you may think. There is a lot of human psychology at play when it comes down to how to market products. The rush you feel when you make a purchase (especially when you snag a deal) is not by accident. However, we must practice self-control and recognize there are other ways to feel that peak in emotion in healthier and more affordable ways. Mindless Content – Information is becoming increasingly more available in every form. Whether we mindlessly scroll social media, stare blankly at a television screen, or infiltrate our minds with secular music—when we are not actively engaging in what we are consuming, it becomes a concern. Be intentional about what shows you watch and the music you allow in your car and home. Regardless of whether we realize it or not, those scenes and lyrics will impact our lives. Negative Effects of Consumerism Of course, we cannot remove ourselves completely from being consumers of some kind. However, we can safeguard ourselves from consuming information and content that is detrimental to our well-being. A few negative effects consumerism has on us and others include: If you desire to be a participant in your life, you will need to learn how to become a mindful consumer again. 4 Ways to be a Mindful Consumer Being a mindful consumer means not falling for all of the marketing schemes and knowing your limitations. Here are four ways to stop being a mindless consumer and move towards mindful consumption: Stop and Reevaluate - Before you make your next purchase, pause before the checkout line and think about what this new item will add to your life. Is it worth it? Will the “rush” of the purchase end before you even get home? Ask yourself why you are “relaxing” by staring at your phone. If you’re looking for a way to escape your current situation, instead maybe you should determine why you feel the need to escape. Consider Your Motivations - What is the real reason you feel like you need this product? It is impossible for you to feel the need to keep up with the Joneses, or maybe you can learn to be satisfied going your own way. Remember Your Goals and Dreams - We all have goals and dreams; however, they are easily forgotten when we are mindlessly consuming what the world is throwing at us. Take time to write those dreams down and come back to them often. Discipline Yourself - We often see the word “discipline” and immediately think it is a bad thing. However, self-discipline is a lost art. It is incredibly important that we learn how to practice discipline in our own lives to pursue what really matters. If you have a goal of reducing your mindless scrolling, you will have to be disciplined enough to put your phone down and put it on “do not disturb” so you can give your time and attention elsewhere. Learn to Be a Mindful Consumer with Life Mentoring - It is challenging to switch your mentality from being able to consume whatever you want whenever you feel like it—but understanding the negative effects of consumerism will help you move towards mindful consumption. Who or what are you going to allow to consume your time, money, and mind? If you’d like to discuss how life mentoring can help reduce your mindless consumption, book a free consultation today. THE DILEMMA Technology addiction is a growing problem amongst adults, teens, an& even kids in this digital age. Use of smartphones, social media and a host of other technology it is nearly impossible to even buy groceries or go to school without touching it multiple times. According to the addictionresource.com article "What is Technology Addiction, and What Harmful Effects it May Bring?" one in eight United States citizens are addicted to their devices, with young people even more addicted. According to NBC News, fifty-nine percent of parents feel their teens are addicted to their mobile phones and tablets. Fifty percent of teens agree that they are. Twenty-seven percent of parents admit they themselves are addicted to their mobile devices. And twenty-eight percent of teens say their parents are the ones addicted. We all know that social media and technology in general has FOREVER changed our world. But what are the scientific impacts of social media & technology addiction on us all. What does it really mean when we allow the soulless multiverse, to our mental, physical, and emotional health. How much exposure to damaging content are we even getting? And more importantly even then what these impacts are, WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT? By saying technology addiction, what are we referring to exactly; it is the compulsive use of technology devices, such as smartphones, computers, and gaming systems, to the point that it begins to negatively impact daily life. People that are addicted to tech find that they are checking their devices all the time, spending boundless amounts of time online - often without noticing the time has passed, and feel anger or anxiety when they cannot get access to these devices. These behaviors often interfere with school, work, self-worth, and personal relationships- in extreme cases overshadowing real-life relationships. One of the greatest concerns about this phenomenon is its impact on mental health. Excessive use of tech can lead to depression, anxiety, social isolation, and has even led to suicide. Studies have shown a link between spending time on social media and feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem. The isolation it can bring on drops face-to face time which we all know is essential for emotional development and mental health. Technology ' s impact on us is profound, greatly changing us. The impact of Tech & social media on us all By Kim Prevost - inspired by the Sundance film, The Social Dilemma Another concern is that the uptick in harmful material. The internet is full of information - real and imagined, as well as inappropriate or even dangerous information, for adults, & even more specifically young people. Cyberbullying, violence, sexually explicit, gambling, criminal, racist, delusional, and even more insidious than those, subconscious manipulation by unmonitored systems. Tech addiction treatment requires everyone take an active role. Hold ourselves, spouses, friends and children accountable; set limits on the amount of time spent using tech, establishing clear boundaries about what is acceptable, and monitoring device usage. This is all very hard when everyone is doing it & we all want our privacy. It can be more helpful than to encourage other activities: in person meetings, physical exercise, reading, and spending time with friends and family. Promoting healthy habits and acknowledging the dangers of tech addiction are also paramount. Knowing more can allow us all to make an informed decision about usage. 59% of parents think theirteen is addicted to technology Hearfrom tech creators themselves with the Sundance Film: The Social Dilemma Cyberbullying is only the tip of the iceberg. Only 9% disagree with parents Let this not downplay the negative impact it can have on physical health. Sitting in front of a screen leads to a sedentary lifestyle which shoots the risk of obesity, type two diabetes, heart disease, ADHD, Autism, Bipolar disorder & a host of other health problems. Blue light greatly impacts sleep patterns & mental health as well as vision & inducing migraines. We must take action to fight the impact of Tech addiction! Taking a deeper look at the information available about tech addiction and about social media and business practices surrounding its use we can understand these impacts and fight for our own lives to change it. This isn't the only problem we need to focus on but it's a damn good place to start. We Must Take Action! ISSOCIAL M A R C H 2023 | V OL 6 22 QUARTERLYINNOVATOR

MR.MECHANIC Directional tires can make your car safer in the rain - or more likely to hydroplane. The difference lies in the installation. Knowing how directional tires should be installed increases your safety. A modern tire technically puts ever increasing emphasis on performance and efficiency. Directional tires have tread specifically designed to channel water away from the center of the tire, providing better and more consistent tread-to-road contact and thus more driver control. Properly mounted directional tires work better than traditional tires in several ways, including dry grip, tread life, and most importantly, wet grip for driving in the rain. Directional tires achieve this by aligning and contouring the treat blocks to move water away from the center of the tire. Directional and overlapping tread blocks provide quieter, smoother running and better directional stability in any conditions. However, when improperly installed, directional tires have the opposite effect and guide water into the center of the tire, substantially increasing the risk of hydroplaning. In order to get the best from your tires, determine whether they're directional in two different ways. Tread on directional tires should arc towards the outward edges of the tire from a point in the center, forming a sort of arrow shape. when looking at the tire from the front of the car, the point of the arrow should point down towards the road. Directional tires also have an arrow and possible labeling which indicate the direction of rotation. If the arrow points toward the hood of the car, you could be jeopardizing safe travel. Your tires should be re-installed as soon as possible. when tires are rotated or balanced during routine maintenance, or when new tires are installed, check your tires to ensure they have been re-installed properly. A pretty but unassuming woman sits in front of her computer in a relatively full Starbucks. She doesn't seem like she would be a threat to anyone. Plugging away at the keys, maybe she is a writer or an accounting professor, perhaps a coffee critic. All these assumptions would be wrong if the woman is Lisa Smith, CEO and Founder of Dragon Investigation Group. Lisa is absolutely a threat if anyone is hiding fraud, or some other secret not fit for print. She is a Certified Fraud Examiner, a licensed private investigator, and professional genealogist - in fact, a real life triple threat! M A R C H 2023 | V OL 6 25 The DIG for Answers Member Profile of Lisa Smith, Certified Fraud Examiner, Private Investigator & Professional Genealogist written by: Kim Prevost Originally from New Hampshire, Lisa is a member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners and the Texas Association of Licensed Investigators, and the Rockingham County Law Enforcement Association. She began her career in computer programming, before moving into the medical field then pursuing a career in investigation & fraud examination. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Criminal Justice. Her creative & analytical skills optimize her investigation work and fit perfectly into her love for solving puzzles. When she is not working, Lisa loves riding her Harley, crocheting cute critters, & anything sci-fi! Interesting stories, lost loved ones, protecting companies from internal and external threats, and solving cases that boggle the mind, test the senses and change lives is the flashy side of Lisa's vocation but the hard truth is what drives her to not just enjoy the flash but dedicate her life to the harder to grasp analytics - She puts in the time intensive detail work that so often eludes even the most diligent of us. This is what makes her successful with a variety of cases. Lisa prefers the fraud & genealogy cases; she had some amazing details to share: "My very first PI case, I was at an MLM makeup party a friend was holding, another guest found me. She wanted help finding her half-sister's birth father. He had been lost to the wind while in the military. When her sister was around 3 years old, her father disappeared, and their mother stopped mentioning him all together. The only information we had was the father's DOB, his name, that he was in the army, the last gift he gave her was a tricycle and the dad looked remarkably like Elvis Presley," Lisa excitedly explained. Lisa got licensed as a PI after starting this genealogy case. Soon she had found three potential candidates for the Elvis look alike. One of the candidates had a yearbook photo in which he did, in fact, look like the Kind of Rock n Roll. Lisa contacted the client to fill her in on the hunt for Elvis. The client's sister the contacted the man and asked if he was who she was looking for - he said he was. Soon they arranged to have a reunion for the father and sisters in Houston. Lisa was able to go along to film the reunion. This case was a huge success, and it merged the two modalities of genealogy and private investigation, Lisa was hooked and the rest is history In another case, our own Conroe Chamber of Commerce led Lisa to meet the president of a local bank. The case was to prove that one their borrowers was a straw-borrower (someone that takes a mortgage loan under false pretenses) on a 1.5-million-dollar home loan. The borrower got a personal loan as well. This home was supposed to be for entertaining clients for the borrower's business. Suddenly the borrower stopped paying on the personal loan. Lisa and the bank had to get permission to even arrive at the mortgaged property. Upon arrival the found that the property was being lived in by the previous owners, rather than the borrow or, as the stated purpose, the borrower's clients. The borrower showed up

She recently helped an older widower protect himself in this increasingly difficult arena. The client felt he was doing his due diligence by asking potential matches for identification; however, he didn't anticipate the sophistication of online predators today. Two women had caught his attention and before committing to either; he asked the women provided some documentation, their drivers licenses and passports. As asked, both women provided the appropriate items. Things seemed to be going well. However, all too soon they both started asking him for money, never a good sign Lisa notes. This is when he got Lisa involved. Her research revealed they were BOTH fraudulent, their homes addresses were the biggest give aways. The woman out of Florida's identification stated she was in a mansion previously owned by a very wealthy celebrity - if this was accurate despite her name not appearing on any documentation for the property then why would she need funding by the Lisa's client? The other woman's ID was fake, had an incorrect date of birth, and had a nonexistent address, another simple give-away. The gentleman was able to end communication without further discussion, saving himself the heartache and the headache.
