teer for frontline duty with the Elmhurst
Hospital clinical staff during the worst August 21-28, 2022
of the COVID-19 pandemic in Queens.

“It just blew us out of the water,” Le-
conte, a licensed respiratory therapist,
recalled of the COVID catastrophe.
“There were so many patients that need-
ed respiratory help and I was very for-
tunate, my skills in respiratory helped
quite a bit.”

“There was no way I could not have
gowned up,” he said of his frontline
duty at Elmhurst. “My thing was this is,
whatever we need, let’s do. So, I did ev-
erything from respiratory to mortuary.”

Two weeks into his tenure at Harlem
Hospital, Leconte learned that the staff
that he inherited would be a valuable
key to the successes of his initiatives,
the hospital’s future, and the betterment
of the Harlem community.

On January 21, two severely wounded
NYPD officers from the nearby 32nd
Precinct were shot while responding to
a domestic dispute and were rushed to
Harlem Hospital. Sadly, Officers Wil-
bert Mora and Jason Rivera were fatally
wounded, but the Harlem Hospital staff
made heroic attempts to save their lives.

“I quickly ran to the emergency room. I
saw the amount of work and effort that
was done by the staff here under such
tough conditions, because we literally
had hundreds of police officers in our
emergency room, many of whom [were]
angry and grieving, but yet they [the
Harlem Hospital staff] were still work-
ing to save lives,” recalled Leconte.

“One officer quickly passed away be-
cause of the severity of his injuries. The
second officer – they were working so
hard on,” said Leconte. “I mean, it was
on every single angle you could think of
– from the surgeon to the nurse to the
PCA [patient care associate] to the tech-
nicians, the escort person, the house-
keeper who kept cleaning the blood that
was on the floor …”.

“It just gave me a sense of pride, a sense
of, wow! Thank you, Lord. You’ve giv-
en me a true, true calling, a blessing, a
wonderful place. I can’t tell you how
proud I am of these folks here.”
