TOP VIEW

The floorplan for the national zoo “Me and the Bee” playground has been
designed to communicate the story of a bee’s life with the children as they
play. Using the tracks placed on the ground kids can follow the lives of both
the Mason bee and Honey bees as they fly to flowers, burrow in hives, and The images shown are based on conceptual design and are

ENTRY GATE

This honeycomb wall will be the entrance to the playground. Constructed
of GFRC, this structure will be the first look into the world of bees in this
park. The use of GFRC bees in this entrance will help tie the park together.

FLOWER AND POLLEN GARDEN

Consisting of HDPE, metal tubing, and foam covered polyurea, the flower and pollen
garden creates an energetic environment that would certainly captivate the likes
of both children and adults. Solar powered post mounted speaker with modifiable
playback can be implemented within the garden to simulate the resonances of bees,
or any other chosen sound. The sporadic curvature of the pollen and flower stems
generate bit of optical trickery to resemble the moving and floating nature of pollen. The images shown are based on conceptual design and are
subject to changes during manufacturing.
The flower pedals are modifiable in size and shape to extend to the flower center. All concepts and designs are the sole property of Playworx.

HONEY BEE CLIMBER

~4’

The GFRC honey bee climber will provide a large scale honey bee for children
to explore and to teach them about the process of pollination. Information
signs will be placed near to explain the process, but being able to physically
interact with the process helps teach the children as well. The PIP surfacing
below the structure will depict the petals of the flower, while the flower center The images shown are based on conceptual design and are

MASON BEE CLIMBER

The Mason Bee climber is setup very similarly to the honey bee climber, ex-
cept it features a blue Mason bee, Osmia lignaria. This GFRC structure will
reside along one trail leading to the Mason bee crawl thru, showing children
where this certain species of bee lives. The flower pistil is transformed to
change up the staging. The PIP surfacing acts as the flower petals while the The images shown are based on conceptual design and are

MASON BEE CRAWL THRU

The mason bee crawl thru is a GFRC sculpture that is designed to resemble a reed-
based structure that is utilized by this amazingly unique member of the bee family.
The crawl-thru is an accurate representation of a Mason bee home, from the parti-
tions consisting of mud, nectar provisions and larvae to the red mason bees, osmia
bicornis, climbing all over the tunnel. These internal structures are how new bees are
born, by growing from a larvae inbetween the mud partitions and sustaining them- The images shown are based on conceptual design and are

as they play, they are more likely to retain and embrace the information. All concepts and designs are the sole property of Playworx.

CENTER HIVE

The Hive Tree is the center piece of the park and helps immerse the children
in the bee hive. The piece is constructed of GFRC and uses an epoxy resin
to simulate honey. This climber includes a slide, two means of entry, and
hidden secrets for children to find. The images shown are based on conceptual design and are
subject to changes during manufacturing.

CENTER HIVE

Epoxy Resin is used to simulate the shimmering gleam of honey. The
interior of the structure contains more bees as well as hidden images of
bee pupas, another element for children to explore to find. The images shown are based on conceptual design and are

CENTER HIVE

Children can choose to explore into the
hive through this climber opening. On their
journey through the hive they can discover
the three kinds of honey bees, workers,
drones and the queen.

HONEYCOMB STEPPERS

These steppers offer a great deal of flexibility in this design process. They can
be made of GFRC and can be spread out and placed as needed. Some pods
could be filled with resin or PIP surfacing to resemble honey/bees, while oth-
ers could be empty or contain GFRC models of Bee pupas. These structures
could serve as both seating for rest, Wand as climbers for playing. The images shown are based on conceptual design and are
