Samrakshan

Project Samrakshan is a new national initiative planned by IRIA to address the high perinatal mortality rates,
low birth weight and preterm babies in India. The program aims to develop a broader and deeper focus on
fetal and maternal well being with particular emphasis on the common conditions affecting fetal health and
growth.Samrakshan, in its initial phases, focuses on two of the most common causes for fetal morbidity and
growth restriction. These are pre-eclampsia and fetal growth restriction. Samrakshan aims at early
identification of these conditions through focused 1st trimester scans, risk prediction and the early initiation
of appropriate interventions like low dose aspirin, and focused 3rd trimester scans with an emphasis on fetal
environment and growth. Samrakshan has several pillars that build strength to the program. These include
offline CMEs organized by state chapters of IRIA, online courses, training in Doppler studies and systematic
sequential exams, use of risk prediction models to identify at risk pregnant women, generation of local
contextual evidence through the online submission of forms that can  lead to development of Indian
standards and guidelines, dissemination of scientific evidence through a journal club, awareness generation,
and involvement of all stakeholders including OBGs and Neonatologists. Samrakshan will also synergise with
RAKSHA & other relevant programs of IRIA.Details of Samrakshan including access to resources including
courses, online submission of forms, download of hard copies of forms, access to Samrakshan Reports,
Samrakshan library, is possible through the IRIA website at http://bit.ly/samrakshaniria and through the

Tree Plantation drive on 4th Aug 2019

The nation wide Go Green campaign of IRIA on the 4th of August, was marked by active participation of
members at Kochi. The drive got a pan state appeal as the Breast CME was in session. The Tree plantation drive
was inaugurated by National Vice President Dr. Amel Antony in the presence of State Secretary Dr. Rijo Mathew,
State Joint Secretary Dr. Ramesh Shenoy and Kochi Chapter President Dr. M. R. Balachandran Nair. In his brief
address Dr. Amel Antony stressed on the various initiatives launched by National IRIA under the able leadership
of Dr. Hemant Patel. Dr. Amel wanted every member to make this campaign a daily mantra, so that in the years
to come Radiologists could be the harbingers of a better environment and an affectionate Mother Earth.
Marking the occasion several saplings were planted at the Kochi IMA House with arrangements for constant care
and nurturing of the saplings. Every delegate for the CME was given a sapling as memento to get the message
across. The enthusiasm of the participants was so great that, many of them wanted additional saplings.
Radiologists as a community have finally come out of the self made cocoon of behind the scenes Doctors
disconnected from Society. The Tree plantation campaign was given wide coverage by the media as well. The
campaign has resulted in creating an awareness of the state of our environment and has convinced everyone
that it's a collective of individual efforts that's going to make the difference. The success of the campaign
became even more evident when there was a unified demand for celebrating Tree plantation as an annual
event.
