The Springs Magazine • July 2023 • 2 Gerri Much is a Hot Springs artist who is known for her colorful and whimsical paintings. Splitting her time between Hot Springs, Arkansas, and Sanibel Island, Florida, Much is a member of the Mid-Southern Watercolorists, along with the Sanibel-Captiva Art League of Florida, and the Barrier Island Group for the Arts in Southwest Florida. We were drawn to “Floral Feathers’” beauty and colors and felt in this month of patriotism, it would be a perfect representation of The Springs Magazine’s mission to celebrate the talent of our local artists while combining the beauty of nature and the celebration of our freedom. Dolores Justus, owner of Justus Fine Art Gallery in Hot Springs where Much’s work is shown, has been a longtime supporter of Much’s work and was instrumental in procuring the photo of the art. The cover layout was created by Richard Stephens, our graphic designer, and artist, who so brilliantly creates our covers each month. Stephens did a beautiful job of incorporating Much’s painting into the magazine’s overall design. Thanks to all who helped bring this beautiful piece of art to our readers. We hope you will enjoy it as “Much” as we do. Have a safe and Happy 4th of July from The Springs Magazine Team! About the Cover Photo . . . “Floral Feather” by Gerri Much

3 • The Springs Magazine • July 2023 By Erin Baber The Garland County Library was forever changed within three days in early June. On Thursday, June 8, the library’s newest branch was delivered - a brand new full-size bookmobile. And on Saturday, June 10, the Community Garden and Park, which I lovingly call “Garden County Library” was opened to the public. Both of these projects have been years in the making and have incurred their fair share of challenges and triumphs. Work began on the bookmobile in 2020 when a combination of federal grant money and community financial support came together to fully fund the bookmobile - thanks to generous donations from the Oaklawn Foundation, Millie Gore Lancaster and Maestro Wilson, and the Friends of the Garland County Library. Funding the bookmobile became the easiest part as the project saw delay after delay due to pandemic shortages and challenges. Finally, the bookmobile became a reality and the library’s Adult Services Department is excited to iron out all the details of the bookmobile’s services. Look for announcements coming soon about the bookmobile. The library officially broke ground on ‘Garden County Library’ in late 2022. The vacant lot between the library’s upper parking lot and the RIX Professional Building went through a complete revitalization and is now a greening park and upcoming community garden. Over a hundred library friends and neighbors gathered to witness the wildflower-ribbon cutting at the grand opening on June 10. Forty raised beds will be available to patrons to ‘check out’ during the fall planting season. Watch for more details to be announced. Learn more about the Garland County Library. Go to www.gclibrary.com, call 501-623-4161, or visit the library in-person at 1427 Malvern Avenue in Hot Springs for more information about the library’s services and offerings. The Springs Magazine • July 2023 • 4 The 2023 free public Fourth of July Fireworks display over Lake Hamilton will be held Sunday, July 2. The fireworks start at dark on the east side of Highway 7 across from the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel at the first Highway 7 bridge. They are free and open to the public. The fireworks will be shot from barges in the middle of Lake Hamilton. They will be synchronized with music on radio station 97.5 FM US97 when fans watch the display. The Fourth of July fireworks display is one of three sponsored each year by Visit Hot Springs. The other two are on Memorial Day and Labor Day. For more information call Steve Arrison at 501-321-2207. Free Fourth of July Fireworks on the Lake July 2 A free public screening of the documentary film “Fastball,” narrated by actor Kevin Costner, and a baseball card show have been added to the schedule for the 2023 Hot Springs Baseball Weekend August 25 – 26 at the Hot Springs Convention Center. That’s in addition to the previously announced lineup of five Major League Baseball legends who will talk about baseball with fans and conduct panel discussions during the weekend. Four MLB Hall of Famers – Rollie Fingers, Wade Boggs, Rich (Goose) Gossage, and Steve Carlton – will join Al (The Mad Hungarian) Hrabosky for the panels and interactions with fans for the Sixth Annual Hot Springs Baseball Weekend. The “Fastball” documentary, which will be screened free for the public at 7 p.m. Friday, August 25, features legends Hank Aaron and Derek Jeter, with Kevin Costner narrating, in an exploration of the magic 396 milliseconds it takes a fastball to reach home plate from the pitcher’s hand. They and a large cast of other baseball greats decipher who threw the fastest pitch ever. The documentary examines the primal battle between the pitcher and batter, but the magic of the game arises from that confrontation, only 396 milliseconds in the making. The mysteries and memories of baseball's greatest heroes are revealed in the movie, featuring interviews with dozens of former players, from legendary Hall of Famers to up-and-coming All-Stars. “Fastball” is peppered with archival footage of baseball's greatest moments plus original high-speed footage and motion graphics that unlock the secrets hidden within a ball traveling over 100 miles an hour. While players, historians, and scientists might disagree on who was actually the fastest pitcher in history – and yes, the film does the physics and concludes with a clear verdict – “Fastball” tells the story of the game itself. For more information, call Steve Arrison at 501-321-2027, and visit Facebook: HotSpringsBaseballWeekend. “Fastball” Documentary & Baseball Card Show at Baseball Weekend August 25 - 26 Kevin Kostner narrates “Fastball,” a film that examines the primal battle between the pitcher and batter,

By David Rose As you may know, I attend the Unitarian Universalist Church out on Spring Street here in Hot Springs. We don’t have a preacher; we all just take turns. A woman recently took to the podium to talk about those faceless people in our lives. Waiters, shelf stockers, cashiers; the people who stood by us during the pandemic. “We should not forget them now,” she said. “Give them a kind word when they serve your meal or ring up your purchases.” A few days later I was self-checking in a large grocery store and had in my basket, among other things, a bottle of wine. I signaled the associate, a young man in his early twenties. He came over and checked the date of birth on my driver’s license. “1948,” he said. “I thought you were younger.” I was liking this kid already, and not just because of the flattery. His was a boring and methodical job and yet here he was trying to make a game out of it to keep his mind active. He was challenging himself to guess the age of every patron who called for his assistance. “Yes,” I said in an attempt to extend the conversation and connect with him as an individual. “Did you know that Orville Wright was still alive in 1948?” He looked puzzled for a few beats and then beamed. “Oh yeah, you mean the popcorn guy.” For all I know, the Wright Brothers have been canceled and are no longer taught in school, or maybe this kid was absent that day. I gave him the benefit of the doubt. David Malcolm Rose is back again, this time as a painter. His “Life in the Time of Corona” series will be showing at the Artist's Workshop Gallery on Central beginning with the July gallery walk. The Wright Stuff Artist and author, David Rose.

The Springs Magazine • July 2023 • 6 Low Key Arts is pleased to announce a free event, The Punk Rock Bedroom Party, to be held at the Pocket Theatre in conjunction with Gallery Walk on Friday, July 7. Doors will open at 6:00 P.M. Included is an exhibit of punk rock-related art, as well as live music. Artist/musician Robert “Bob Rob” Medina hails from San Diego and creates kinetic, vibrant artworks based on photos of classic punk bands and a personal history rooted in the culture. After decades living abroad, in such exotic places as Egypt, Ethiopia, and Abu Dhabi, Bob’s fascination with this musical subculture remains as strong as ever. Taking his art on the road for the first time, Bob’s “Punk Rock Bedroom” installation recreates his early-80s bedroom, replacing photocopied fliers with Bob’s own modern creations inspired by the wild urgency and creative explosion that was taking place in both music and his mind at that time. Little Rock’s Skull of the Americas will be on hand to prove that the culture is alive and well some forty years later. The Punk Rock Bedroom Party is free, all ages are welcome. 9 • The Springs Magazine • July 2023 By Erin Wood “A feast for the eyes and the spirit of all Black children. Mercer has blended fine art, quilting, and literary excellence,” says fiber artist and storyteller Bisa Butler about Little Rock poet and textile artist Crystal C. Mercer’s children’s book, From Cotton to Silk: The Magic of Black Hair. On Juneteenth, the book was released in paperback. About the paperback release, Crystal shares, “Based on a true story, From Cotton To Silk: The Magic of Black Hair pays homage to my late grandmother, Leola Strong Brown, affectionately known as ‘Memaw,’ and ushers my nieces into the knowledge of their heritage. I couldn’t be more proud of this work and of who I come from.” The book’s enchanting pages reveal 467 hours of hand-stitching poured into textile renderings that blend cloth, culture, and the superpowers of the kinky, curly coif. Sprinkled with #BlackGirlMagic and an ode to cultural beauty, From Cotton to Silk encourages girls everywhere to appreciate their hair in its natural state and love themselves just the way they are. In the book, it’s Wash Day, but Elise doesn’t want to wash her hair. Will a visit from her favorite Auntie CC, encouragement from her big sister, Gisele, a poem laced with magic, and a special gift passed down from the women who came before her be enough to change her mind? Signed copies of this 8.5 x 11 paperback and hardback are available at etaliapress.com. Hot Springs native, Erin Wood is a writer, editor, and publisher in Little Rock. She owns and runs (www.etaliapress.com). Wood is author of “Women Make Arkansas: Conversations With 50 Creatives” (April 2019) and editor of and a contributor to “Scars: An Anthology” (2015). “From Cotton to Silk” by Crystal Mercer The Hot Springs Haiku Club is meeting at the Garland County Library the first Friday of every month from 2-4 PM, immediately before Gallery Walk. The Springs Magazine • July 2023 • 12 How many chances do you get to ride your bicycle through the lobby of one of the South’s grand old hotels? In the case of the Güdrun - Northwoods Trails Mountain Bike Festival’s Slow Roll event, November 10 will be the fifth chance. “We are super excited to be opening our Fifth Annual Güdrun - Northwoods Mountain Bike Festival with another Slow Roll through downtown Hot Springs,” Visit Hot Springs Trails Coordinator Traci Berry said. “The Slow Roll is a fun group ride for all ages and bicycles of all types. It’s a family favorite. You can ride your mountain bike, your road bike, your gravel bike, your cruiser bike, or your EBike. Folks of all ages join the ride.” Berry said registration for the Slow Roll will be limited to 100 entries. All ages are welcome, but children under age 14 must be accompanied by a parent. “Kids will be able to keep up,” Berry said, “as the average pace will be about 4 miles an hour.” The Fifth Güdrun Festival will be held November 10 – 12 at Hot Springs’ internationally acclaimed Northwoods Trail System. We have grown our trail system from 15.7 miles with Phase 1 to 21.5 miles on city property today, giving us 31.5 miles of awesome trail just five minutes from downtown.” For more information about the race, call Traci Berry at 501-321-2027. The 1972 Winnebago RV featured in the fourth season of “Stranger Things” and the sheriff’s 2000 Ford Crown Victoria from “The Walking Dead” will be featured September 22 – 24 for Season 7 of Hot Springs’ Spa-Con pop culture and comics convention. “Spa-Con had the Hawkins Van from ‘Stranger Things’ last year, and this year Spa-Con will have the RV that Eddie Munson stole in Season 4 of ‘Stranger Things,’” Visit Hot Springs Special Events Manager Alexis Hampo said. “Spa-Con is on a roll." “Stranger Things” character Eddie stole the Winnebago from an RV park to use as the Hawkins Kids’ mobile base of operations to fight Vecna during Season 4. Hampo said this will be the first convention appearance for the 1972 Winnebago RV since Season 4 of “Stranger Things” aired. Season 5 is expected to be released on Netflix in 2025. Before it was in “Stranger Things” the RV was driven by Donald Sutherland in the movie "Leisure Seeker." That movie is streaming now on Max. Also on hand for Spa-Con fans to enjoy will be the 2000 Ford Crown Victoria sheriff’s car featured in “The Walking Dead” series, Hampo said. “The car was used by Rick Grimes, one of the main characters of ‘The Walking Dead,’ played by Andrew Lincoln,” she said. In the show, the Ford Crown Vic was found abandoned and Rick took it from the King County Sheriff's Department to head toward Atlanta. “‘The Walking Dead’ had an 11-season run from 2010 to 2022, and had a huge fan base that I'm sure will be very excited to see Rick Grimes' sheriff car," Hampo said. It was announced previously that Annabeth Gish, known to “X-Files” fans as Special Agent Monica Reyes, will be a special celebrity guest for Season 7 of Spa-Con. She will be at the Opening Ceremonies, hold a panel discussion with questions from the fans, and will have professional photo opportunities with attendees. She also will be present in the Expo Hall selling merchandise. Also announced as special guests at Spa-Con Season 7 are comedian, writer, actor, and producer Orlando Jones, who has been called “the King of Fandom” by MTV, and Janeshia Adams-Ginyard, who starred in the blockbuster movies “Black Panther” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” She is known for her role as Nomble, one of the Dora Milaje, in the two hit movies. VIP passes for Spa-Con Season 7 are on sale now for $150. Weekend passes are $35. Visit www.spa-con.org for more information. Hampo said VIP pass holders will receive a VIP T-shirt, a Spa-Con tote bag, a Spa-Con laminate, a Spa-Con notebook, and a Spa-Con metal cup. VIP pass holders also have access to the VIP lounge, celebrity meet-and-greets, and advanced access to all panels, workshops, and photo ops. In addition, there will be a VIP party each night of the convention, sponsored by Superior Bathhouse Brewery, The Porterhouse Club, and Hotel Hot Springs. Tesla Fest Returns to Celebrate the 167th Birthday of Nikola Tesla Visitors to Tesla Fest will have the opportunity to experience the World’s Most Powerful Conical Tesla Coil and engage in various activities, including creating circuits, making their own phones, and examining X-rays using light boxes. Forrie J. Smith, the real cowboy who rode to fame as the beloved Lloyd Pierce in the insanely popular “Yellowstone” TV series, will be the official starter March 17, 2024, in the First Ever 21st Annual World’s Shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Hot Springs. “We could have looked forever and never have found a more perfect person to fire the official starter’s pistol for our world-famous little parade,” Visit Hot Springs CEO and parade founder Steve Arrison said. “Forrie is a real cowboy who plays a real cowboy, and he has ridden into the hearts of millions of ‘Yellowstone’ fans. He’ll be perfect for the 21st edition of our parade on 98-foot Bridge Street next March.” The parade annually attracts more than 30,000 fans from across the country to Bridge Street, which Ripley’s Believe It or Not declared the World’s Shortest Street in Everyday Use. It features an array of 40 or more zany entries that include a troupe of marching Irish Elvis Presley impersonators, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, marching Irish wolfhounds, wacky floats, marching bands, and assorted marchers who adopt the parade’s irreverent take on the boisterous holiday. Smith got his start as a movie/TV stuntman in the 1980s and also began taking on small acting roles as well. “I use a lot of the things I learned from rodeo in the film industry,” Smith says. “Like breaking things down into steps, thinking positive and not being negative. Thinking about what you did wrong and forgetting it, thinking about what you did right and building on it. Hurry up and wait — that’s all learned from rodeo.” For more information call Steve Arrison at 501-321-2027. Forrie J. Smith of “Yellowstone” Official Starter in St. Pat’s Parade Forrie J. 17 • The Springs Magazine • July 2023 By Peggy Lindsey People rarely consider how their actions impact the world. In fact, the majority of us go about our daily routines without a second thought. Yet, these behaviors unmistakably reverberate throughout our physical and social world. It matters not if one’s conduct is polite or rude, the influence spreads. As we consider the pebble hitting the stillness of a pond, we notice the resulting ripples across the water. The fish, the ducks, and the vegetation are all affected, and change is caused through this single, simple act. Take a moment to contemplate the importance of your own actions. Donating to the traveler on the side of the road allowed him to make it home to see his sick mother. Sharing a meal with the elderly neighbor provided the only nutritious food she would partake of that day. Hiring the teenager to mow the lawn permitted him to save up for college. Disposing of trash in an appropriate receptacle prevented animals from getting sick while keeping the environment clean. Checking in on a sick friend helped her to know she is loved and cared for. Everything we do . . . or don’t do . . . will have an impact on our world, either positively or negatively. As Mother Teresa once stated, “I alone can’t change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” We begin to change the world by starting in our own homes, at our jobs, in our communities, and our towns. What kind of influence are you making today? You decide! And always remember how life-changing a single act can be. The Springs Magazine • July 2023 • 18 By Alison Crane An estimated 68% of U.S. households have a pet. Most people consider their pets to be furry family members. As someone who has grown up with a variety of pets and as a parent, I can vouch for the richness that pets bring to our lives. According to research by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) owning a pet can make a noticeable difference in people’s health. Having a dog or cat or some other animal can aid in decreasing blood pressure and also lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels leading to healthier hearts. Pets help with feelings of loneliness and can lower anxiety and symptoms of PTSD. Some studies have found that people who have a pet miss less work and make fewer visits to the doctor and get more exercise. Children who grow up with pets are not as likely to develop allergies and asthma. Studies are also showing multiple benefits for pet interactions at school, especially for kids with autism and ADHD. Pets also provide children with opportunities to develop responsibility and empathy, character traits that will serve them well as adults. If you are considering getting a pet, it would be beneficial to consider what your goal is for having one. For example, do you want to get more exercise? Then a dog would make a better choice than a turtle because dogs need to be walked and need plenty of playtime. But if you work a lot you would need a low-maintenance pet, a turtle or a fish might be a good option. Whatever type of pet you choose, remember that pets are generally a longterm commitment. Some parrots will live 50 years or more. Be sure to consider the cost of maintaining your pet’s health and well-being over the lifetime of that animal. If you have children and are interested in helping them learn more about animals and their care, 4-H offers opportunities for learning about animal husbandry and more through our educational projects and programs. You can contact the Garland County Extension Service for information on our county 4-H clubs and how to get involved. Call 501-623-6841 or email [email protected]. You can also visit our website at www.uaex.uada.edu. Alison Crane is a Family and Consumer Sciences Agent with the Garland County Extension Service. Are Pet Owners Healthier? Having a pet can aid in decreasing blood pressure and also lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels leading to healthier hearts. Preparations are underway for the 2023 Hot Springs Hope CARE Workshop to be held July 28, 2023, at the National Park College. The workshop is an annual event held in cities throughout the state through which the local nonprofit Alzheimer’s Arkansas provides FREE education, training, and support to those caring for a loved one with dementia. The workshop provides general information regarding Alzheimer’s disease and its progression, tools, knowledge, and techniques to improve caregiving skills. Through the support of local vendors and sponsors, the workshop is completely free for caregivers. In order to ensure the event is accessible for all caregivers, the organization is offering mini-grants to help offset some of the cost of care on the day of the event. Attendees can fill out a simple form and receive some respite care reimbursement shortly after the workshop. For more information, to register, or to inquire about the grant, contact Alzheimer’s Arkansas by calling 501-224-0021. To register for the workshop, visit https:// secure.givelively.org/event/alzheimer-s-arkansas/hope-care-workshop-2023-hotsprings. Sponsorships are still available. Alzheimer’s Caregiver Workshop in Hot Springs July 28 By Emanuel Alvarez Valencia Combat veteran artists hold a unique place in the art world. Their works offer a glimpse into the experiences only a few have had, and the emotions they carry with them. Veteran artists take on the responsibility of representing the brutality of conflict and war and its lasting impact on the human psyche. Their art allows them to process their experiences and connect with others who share them, all while providing insight into the harsh realities of combat. A prime example of a combat veteran artist’s significance is Michael Reagan. A veteran of the Vietnam War, Reagan found solace in creating portraits of fallen soldiers after he returned home. These portraits, known as Fallen Heroes, have been displayed in the White House, the Pentagon, and countless other public and private spaces across the United States. Their impact is undeniable, conveying the sacrifice and heroism of those who gave their lives fighting for their country. The importance of combat veteran artists extends beyond their ability to document the harsh realities of war. Their art humanizes former soldiers, offering a perspective that civilians who have never served cannot provide. This unique perspective can shift perceptions, dispel preconceptions, and foster empathy. Additionally, veteran artists can use their platform to raise awareness about issues faced by former soldiers, including homelessness, mental health struggles, and physical disabilities. We must celebrate and support veteran artists. Their art enriches the cultural landscape and can impart crucial insights into our shared humanity. It’s necessary to create avenues for veteran artists to showcase their work, such as exhibitions, fairs, and galleries. Through such efforts, we can ensure that veteran artists’ contributions are widely recognized and celebrated and that their crucial perspective is integrated into the greater tapestry of the art world. 19 • The Springs Magazine • July 2023 Tarot: Cancer & The Chariot By Michelle Crandell If your astrological sign is Cancer, your corresponding Tarot Major Arcana card is The Chariot. The Chariot represents how change happens. Change involves balancing apparent opposites: effort and rest, power and responsibility, work and play, holding on and letting go. The Chariot governs motivation, emotion and movement. Charioteers are confident, sometimes arrogant or hasty, especially when young. People influenced by this card desire to motivate others, accomplish things effortlessly, and manage multiple tasks well. They strive to combine quietude and creativity, stability, and adventure. The Chariot is a “young card,” likened to an adolescent. The experiences a Charioteer has negotiating the world via willpower, self-control, success, and limitation affect them deeply. A Charioteer might be pulled apart by competing needs, losing their way, or willfully denying reality. Their challenge is to master the laws of cause and effect, stay true to what they value, and facilitate the process of growth in self and others. Shadow aspects of The Chariot: believing that having a goal leads to futility; self-neglect/self-indulgence; fear of failure. Lack of self-discipline can prevent the Cancer born from learning how to manage competing desires, an ability needed to move forward in life. Michelle Crandell provides individual Tarot readings for a fee. Once a year, she teaches LEARN TO READ TAROT. Call if interested in her next class. To learn more, email [email protected], or call 501-655-6242. The Major Arcana Tarot card associated with Cancer is The Chariot.
