About the Cover...

“Spring Break Bath” by Chris Meeks

After many years of admiring
the graphic artistry of Chris Meeks,
we’re very happy here at The Springs
Magazine to showcase this piece he
created just for us.

As a Hot Springs based
illustrator, Meeks has been honing
his skills in illustration for the past
several years. While working as
a graphic designer for the local
newspaper, The Sentinel-Record,
Meeks pursued his side hustle
as a freelance illustrator, working
for several different companies,
including AMC and Topps.

His major contribution to
illustration has been in the trading
card business where he has illustrated cards for Star Wars, Game of
Thrones, DC & Marvel, as well as Topps’ name brands including Mars Attacks and
Garbage Pail Kids.
Meeks works in a variety of mediums including pen & ink, marker and
acrylic. He’s taking a crack at airbrushing, which is going “so-so,” as he puts it.
Currently, he is working on a new set of Marvel trading cards, and a set
for Game of Thrones 10th Anniversary set. He is also illustrating the cover for local
author, Robert Campbell’s, horror novel for kids, “The Hunt for Dink the Clown.”
“I was very lucky to be born in a town with such a rich artistic history and
community. Who knows if I would have pursued this career living anywhere else?”
Look for Meeks’ work at Deviantart.com/Kapow2003 and Facebook: Chris Meeks.
Once again, we offer special thanks to Richard Stephens for putting
together our cover as he has for our first 29 years! Visit his website to check out his
superb watercolors. www.raswatercolors.com.
Here’s to a sunny and cool April! Until next month…

Nagy’s Solar Course
Available Free on YouTube
By Bob Nagy

Since the first oil crisis, I've been

building and installing renewable energy

systems. The first two panels I purchased

in 1976 are still in operation today on my

shed lighting up the yard at night. Between

then and now, I've been responsible for

literally thousands of solar installations.

About 15 years ago, I realized that

I needed to create a video training series Let Bob Nagy help you unplug
on how to take responsibility for your own yourself using solar energy
energy use. It took four months to create,

but it has served as the basis of Solar training for over 3000 people. There have been

several revisions over the years. I had the DVD course on Amazon for 10 years and

thousands were sold. This course is the basis of my Solar Energy Class at National

Park College's Innovative Training Center here in Hot Springs.

Since our new president is promoting adoption of renewable energy, I

thought it is time to start giving away my course. To that end, I've posted it all on a

YouTube channel. It is over 5 hours of comprehensive solar energy training.

The course is weighted towards off-grid solar systems. This is where you

completely disconnect from power lines and become energy independent. I also

cover Grid-Tie systems where you back-feed commercial power lines. Included are

also videos on reducing your energy needs and building small, portable solar systems.

Search YouTube for “Robert Nagy Solar Power.” You'll see a few chapters.

View, and then subscribe to link to all of them. Go slow, take notes, and soon you

will be a solar power expert.

We made the switch from being hunter-gatherers of our food thousands

of years ago. Without that, not a single town could have been built. We now must

make the same shift to being farmers of a permanent energy supply. The sooner we

do, the less human suffering will occur. It's pretty obvious that we are a little late

with this transition. There are a lot of opportunities, innovations and jobs available

in this new field.

We, as Americans, changed the face of the world with our creativity born

of freedom. Our cell phones, space exploration, internet, jet travel, and personal

computers have defined a century. We should be leading the way to a clean and

permanent energy system. I hope that is what my little effort will help propel.

Northwoods Adds
Summer Fun Series
A series of four “casually competitive events”
has been added to the 2021 schedule of events during
May, June and July, for mountain bikers and runners at
Hot Springs’ acclaimed Northwoods Trail System.

“The Summer Fun Series events will include
a time trial race, a looped XC race, a duathlon and a
six-hour mountain bike race,” Visit Hot Springs Trails
Coordinator, Traci Berry said. “Registration for the
Summer Fun Series is open now at www.bikereg.com/
taco-summer-fun-series.

“The 2021 spring and summer event schedule
will include group rides for mountain bikers of all skill
levels and competitive events for runners and mountain
bikers alike,” Berry said. The popular Full Moon Ride
series, which takes place on the evening of each month's full moon, (April 26) will
be continued, she said.
The Northwoods System includes 26-plus miles of single-track trail for
mountain bikers, trail runners and hikers. Hours of operation are from 6am-10pm.

Call for Artists for Art Festival

The Hot Springs Area Cultural Alliance (HSACA) is excited to announce
multiple opportunities for artists, art lovers, and supporters, during Arts & The Park,
the annual 10-day spring art festival, held April 30 - May 9. HSACA is placing a
call for artists with three different opportunities, as well as seeking artists who wish
to participate in the Artist Studio Tours.

Art Springs: May 1-2, kicks off Arts & The Park’s opening weekend with
two days of art, entertainment, food, and socially distanced fun. HSACA is accepting
artist and performer applications at www.hotspringarts.org through April 10.

Studio Tours: May 8- 9, presented by Riser Auto, is seeking artists who
would like to share their creative spaces with the public.

Soul’s Food: A new addition to Arts & The Park and allows artists to
share their talents with some of the most vulnerable members of the community.
Local artists will create a one-of-a-kind work of art on a small canvas supplied by
HSACA. The artwork will be distributed by local food pantries along with grocery
boxes. HSACA hopes to serve a side of soul-filling goodness to people who may
need it the most and is looking for artists willing to participate in the program by
creating one or more pieces of artwork.

We have endured a

winter unlike any in recent

memory. And Extended

Side Angle requires muscle

endurance of the legs

supporting the body’s weight,

the core to keep the body from

falling down, and the arms and

side body getting into deep

stretches.

As the name of the

pose suggests, there is a great

deal of emphasis on the side Blooming cherry blossoms form the backdrop for
of the body. We frequently Karen Watson Reeves’ demonstration

bends in our yoga practices,

sometimes at the expense of the neglecting the side body.

A great stretch occurs in this pose from the heel to the fingertips on the

extended side. This posture brings a focus to the side waist, outer hips and outer

thighs. It also opens the chest as the waist is lengthened, creating space in the center

of the chest and collar bones.

The quadriceps muscles of the front leg are strengthened, especially as you

lift your core up and away from the bent leg and resist the urge to bring weight into

the arm (which may be bent and lightly resting on the bent leg, instead of reaching

to the ground as pictured).

Once the practitioner has mastered the version of the pose as shown, then

it is time to begin working on the Bound Extended Side Angle Pose, an advanced

version of the pose, which in turn leads to working up to other challenges. Because

just as winter turns to spring, one yoga pose leads to another. It is a great time to The “Real” World...

take your practice outdoors and enjoy springtime in the Spa City!
