Arkadelphia to Host

October Arts Festival

For over 35 years, the Caddo River

Art Guild has celebrated local artists in Clark

County. This fall, the City of Arkadelphia is

expanding the guild’s annual event to what

organizers say will soon be, “one of the finest

arts & entertainment festivals in the region.”

The Arkadelphia Festival of the Arts is a two-

day curated art, music, and culinary event

which combines a respected regional art show

& sale with a modern twist on food, live

music, and performing arts.

The festival kicks off October 15- Rodney Block Collective
16, in downtown Arkadelphia with over 25

Arkansas artists exhibiting various types of arts. Rodney Block Collective headlines

the Friday night schedule of live music.

Other musical acts include The Irie Lions, Blane Howard, Dazz & Brie,

Cliff & Susan, and more acts to be announced soon. Local eateries, food trucks, and

beverage vendors will provide festival-goers with a great selection of food, drink,

and southern hospitality.

City Manager Gary Brinkley says, “The city of Arkadelphia is promoting

the festival to a regional audience in Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. We feel

we have a great setting for a premier arts festival and fall is a wonderful time to

showcase the best Arkadelphia has to offer. Partnering with the Caddo River Art

Guild is a win-win for the city and the artists.”

The festival is free and is designed with an emphasis on showcasing

Arkansas talent. For a schedule of events visit www.ArkadelphiaFestivaloftheArts.

Mae Estes is a Nashville-based singer-songwriter from
Hope, Arkansas. Estes merges the timelessness of classic
Country music with modern melodies and production to
form her exclusive artistry. She has a catalog composed
of raw, uncensored vulnerability like her debut single
“Naked,” as well as confidence anthems like “Best Side.”

Estes has toured internationally with Armed Forces
Entertainment, performing for U.S. Air Force Bases in
Guam, Diego Garcia, and Singapore, as well as across the United States. In 2020, she
signed her first publishing deal with Plaid Flag Music, joining a roster including her “Best

on both Apple Music and Spotify within 3 days and now has well over 1M streams.

a producer, editor, and director in both fiction and nonfiction, he is perhaps one of
the most versatile and talented filmmakers we have. His collaborations are legendary, Dispelling the Mystique of Film Festivals
having contributed to 4 Little Girls, When the Levees Broke, Ganja & Hess, Mo’ Better

GARRETT BRADLEY

Fireside Chat with HSDFF Impact Award Winner

Virtual available on-demand Oct 8-16

Bradley is perhaps most well known for her Academy Award-nominated documentary,
Time. Winner of the 2020 Sundance Award for U.S. Documentary Direction, the film
and Bradley have made many critics “best of” year-end lists. However, she has been
crafting captivating and deeply empathic stories her entire career. With a special
ability to present her subjects as fully formed individuals, simultaneously unique and
relatable, Bradley has cemented her place in the future of the medium.

Melding a visually dynamic approach to storytelling with a journalistic sensibility,
Bradley is able to connect discrete narratives to a larger ideology about how
individuals end up in certain situations. Beginning with her narrative feature debut,
Below Dreams, Bradley has centered characters who are regularly overlooked. Having
spent much of her career creating in the American South, it is clear she understands
and respects a region that is frequently maligned in the popular imagination.

West Mountain makes a nice backdrop for Karen Watson Reeves
to demonstrate Locust Pose. Photo by Fred Padilla.

Yoga:

Benefits of Locust Pose

By Karen Watson Reeves
Locust Pose is considered to be one of the back bends that is accessible to

all yogis. But because it is more attainable does not mean there are fewer benefits.
In fact, Locust Pose strengthens the entire back side of the body, from the base of
the neck to the backs of the heels. This back bend is a shallow one; it is not about
lifting as high as possible, so that makes it one of the safest to practice.

1. Other benefits of Locust Pose include:
2. Strengthening the core, as it does take quite a bit of effort to lift off the

floor and stay for a few breaths.
3. Opening the chest and actively extending the spine while protecting the

lumbar curve.
4. Activating the glutes, adductors, hamstrings and calves.
5. Toning abdominal organs such as the kidneys, liver and spleen.
6. Energizing for the entire body.

Locust Pose can be incorporated in the sun salutations in the place of
Cobra Pose, or it can be practiced in a few rounds on its own (actively coming in
and out of the pose).

The insect known as a locust hops around and can be quite pesky, often
devouring everything in its path. The Sanskrit name for the pose, salabhasana,
means locust, and this pose is said to resemble a locust or grasshopper at rest. It
feels really good to rest after several breaths of Locust Pose. Try following it with
a Child’s Pose.

Karen Watson Reeves has called Hot Springs home since 2006. Owner
of The Yoga Place, at 301 Whittington Avenue, she became a registered yoga/
children’s yoga teacher in 2011. She is on the Hot Springs YMCA teaching staff
