About the Cover ...

Hot Water Hill Music & Arts Festival
Artwork by Chris & Sandy Meeks

When it comes to finding
outrageous covers for The Springs
Magazine, sometimes it just takes
asking the right person. In this case, a
casual ask to Sonny Kay over at Low
Key Arts lead to our good fortune
in snagging a second Chris Meeks
cover. (Check out our March 2021
issue.)

Chris and his wife Sandy
are the creative geniuses behind
this madcap poster designed for
Hot Water Hills Music & Arts
Festival.

To make the poster
work for us, I did a bit of
photoshopping and sent it over to
Richard Stephens, our favorite cover guy, so he could
put his magic touch to work and . . . voilà! A September cover for you to enjoy!

See page 4 of this issue for more festival details and head over to www.
hotwaterhills.com to see the full version of the poster - the detail is amazing. While
you’re there, check out the lineup of fabulous music.

Thank you, Sonny, Richard, and especially Chris and Sandy! At The
Springs, we like to say it takes a quarky village, wouldn’t you agree? Here’s to a
rockin’ September, Everyone!

Please share our online issues of The Springs at www.thespringsmagazine.com.

What the Library

Can Do for You: Part 6

By Erin Baber

Last month I ran

out of space talking about

all the exciting upcoming

changes. I covered the

community garden and

park, remote lockers, and Things are moving up at the GC Library.
the bookmobile, but I A building remodel is on the horizon!
saved the best two for last.

~ The Garland County Library is in talks with the Saline County Library

to create a regional library system. This sounds big and intimidating, but ultimately,

regionalizing would just reduce operating costs and increase circulating collections

for both libraries. There may be a few small changes for our patrons - like

adjustments in operating hours or checkout lengths and limits, but nothing major –

unless you count my next point, which is pretty huge but unrelated to our potential

regionalization.

~ A building remodel is on the horizon! We’ve operated solely out of our

building at 1427 Malvern Avenue since 1995, and while the building is well-kept

and has served us well, we’ve just about outgrown it. But, the library’s building was

designed in a way that will make upward expansion a real possibility. IF we’re able to

go up, we can add so much for our patrons - a teaching kitchen, a dedicated teen area,

a computer lab, more meeting spaces/individual study rooms, more administrative

offices for staff, and more community space within our existing walls.

I can’t wait to see how all these changes and this growth come together

for the community. There is always more to come. Keep up with our growth at

gclibrary.com. Email me, Erin Baber, at [email protected] with any questions

or comments related to this article.

Erin Baber is Public Relations Coordinator at the Garland County Library.

good old fashion Halloween

Barnyard Party and the Murder

Theater folks are inviting you

to this zany who-dun-it. Come

Old MacDonald may

the farm animals know it...ask The cast of the Murder and Macabre Mystery
any one of them. Check with Dinner Theater at their last production, “Wizard
Donkey, the ass, or Rocky of Oz.” (l-r) T.J. Griffith, Steve Freeman, Paul
the rooster, or Miss Prissy
Pig? Or maybe you could ask Lowe, Frank Janaskie, Lynn Janaskie.

Baashebaa the sheep or Elvis the bull. They know everything that goes on and there

is bound to be a murder.

This barnyard murder will be held Fri., Oct. 28, and Sat., Oct. 29, at The

Porterhouse Restaurant at 707 Central Avenue. The Porterhouse will cater this event

with a buffet dinner and a cash bar will be available.

Dress as your favorite barnyard animal, a farmer, or come in your

Halloween attire and enter the costume contest. Tickets are $50 per person.

Reservations required. Doors open at 6 PM for dinner and the play starts at 7 PM.

Lacey Loo has been there. Like a lot of ‘80s and

‘90s kids, she made her own mixtapes perfectly

suited to a style she calls “undefined.” Those

tapes traveled eras and transcended genres.

Decades later, she’s creating that variety and

eclecticism once captured on hand-labeled

tapes on her weekly show, “Undiscovered and Listen to Lacey Loo on KUHS,
Undefined.” 102.5 FM.

Lacey’s birth as a DJ is serendipitous.

Five years ago, a friend invited her to cohost a show. “It was called Ladybits, and I

was hooked.” Until then, Lacey’s obsession with a rainbow of genres didn’t extend

past her own listening habits. With her friend as mentor, Lacey began learning the

intricate multitasking required of DJs. “My biggest issue was how to push buttons,”

she laughs, adding “How to play the ads or the breaks or fix everything when it

suddenly goes silent.”

Five years later, she’s still bringing that eclectic groove she describes as

“myriad music… that spans bluegrass to blues to local bands.” Tune in on Tuesday

nights from 6-10 pm and be sure to follow the “Undiscovered and Undefined”

Facebook page. Listen at 102.5 FM.

Only On Sundays: Mahalia
Jackson’s Long Journey

By Erin Wood
The Six Bridges Book Festival has recently announced another

thrilling author lineup for October 20-30, 2022. This annual festival of the
Central Arkansas Library System features dozens of renowned national and
international authors for adults and children, as well as interactive sessions,
cooking workshops, exhibitions, and other special events.

One of the featured authors, Janis F. Kearney, has a long literary
history in Arkansas, including being appointed by President Clinton as his
personal diarist, having published the historic Arkansas State Press Newspaper
previously run by civil right legend Daisy L. Gatson Bates, founding and being
the president of the Celebrate! Maya Project of Arkansas, and launching her own
publishing company—Writing Our World, among a lifetime of countless other
literary endeavors.

Kearney’s eighth book, Only on Sundays: Mahalia Jackson’s Long
Journey, will release just prior to the Festival. In this book, Kearney chronicles
the life and journey of the incomparable gospel queen who changed the world
with her voice. Kearney’s story offers answers to the transformation of a
motherless child who grew up hard and fast in one of New Orleans’ poorest
districts. The transformation was a miraculous one—little Halie’s evolution into
the gospel queen courted by Hollywood and the White House alike and invited
by royalty from around the world to come and sing for them.

Signed copies of Only on Sundays will be available at the Festival and
in early October through local and national retailers.

For the full festival lineup, visit www.sixbridgesbookfestival.org.

The Major Arcana Tarot card associated with Virgo is The Hermit.

Tarot and Astrology: Virgo

By Michelle Crandell
Those born between August 23 and September 22 fall under the Zodiac

sign: Virgo, the Virgin. Corresponding Major Arcana Tarot card for Virgo, The
Hermit. The following Tarot cards symbolize lessons and opportunities presented
to Virgos.

August 23 to September 1: EIGHT OF COINS. You are known as a
person who gets things done. You are service oriented and a good team player.
You usually want to stay in the background though, finding freedom in anonymity.
Because you are so dependable, you must learn to protect yourself from unstable
or exploitive people. You also need to accept that there is more than one right way
to do things.

September 2 to 11: NINE OF COINS. Your lesson: Understanding the
Laws of Cause and Effect. You attempt to solve your own psychological, ethical,
or lifestyle problems using scientific, technical, or practical methods. Your primary
challenge: maintaining flexibility and lowering unrealistic expectations of yourself,
the world, and others.

September 12 to 22: TEN OF COINS. You bring order, goal-directedness,
and your own strong will to any project you wish to manifest. As a result, wealth
and prosperity come to you. Your challenge: sharing your prosperity with others.
Consider your legacy as more than tangible things you provide to others. Consider
how you treat the people you encounter on your journey through life. Your influence
is your legacy, too.

Michelle Crandell provides individual Tarot readings for a fee. Once a
year, she teaches LEARN TO READ TAROT. Call if interested in her next class. To

Do You Believe in Angels?

Do you know the location of this photo of Karen Watson Reeves demonstrating Up- By Peggy Lindsey

Yoga: 77% of adults believe in the existence of angels, while 30% more women do than men.
Benefits of Upward Facing Plank Angels are spiritual beings created by God, whose mission is to communicate messages,
give direction, offer comfort, and protect humankind. According to Angelology, the study
of angels, there are nine “choirs” or branches of angels; however, only two interface
directly with us here on Earth.

Archangels are the overseers of humankind and of the guardian angels. Each
archangel has a specialty in which they serve humanity. Every person has personal
guardian angels. They guide and protect an individual throughout his/her entire life on
Earth. These angels know you and love you unconditionally.

Guardian angels will never interfere with your life plan, and they will only
intercede when preventing physical death when it is not the proper time.

The angels want to be a part of your daily life. When calling upon them, the
angels respond in a split second. They love assignments! If you have a loved one who is
struggling, or if you witness an accident, ask the angels to attend to them. Our angels have
frequent messages for us, but often times we aren’t tuned in to receive them.

I am an Angel Intuitive trained in providing Angel Readings for others. If you
are interested in finding out what message your angels have for you, I am delighted to be
of service in this way.

Angels don’t just sing at Christmastime . . . their mission is to bring peace to
humanity every day.

If you follow this column, you will remember that I enjoy teaching yoga
to children. When we practice this pose in children’s yoga, I have them imagine
they are a slide on the playground, and then place a ball at the base of the children’s
necks. If it rolls down to the ankles, then the children are strong like a playground
slide. Whether children or adults are practicing this pose, whether the practitioner
imagines playground equipment or flowing water or another image, there is a lot of
strengthening and stretching going on!

The triceps, shoulders, upper back, wrists, legs, and glutes are strengthened.
The chest, abdomen, front hips, ankles, and tops of feet are stretched. When the
head is dropped back, the thyroid gland is stimulated. The entire front of the body is
opened. Practicing Upward Facing Plank can open you to new possibilities. Perhaps
that is the best benefit of all!

The first person to specifically identify the location of the photo will
receive three free classes.
