12-2020 Springs

About the Covers
in This Issue...

This is the month of “covers”
for The Springs Magazine. Back in May
and June we promised to include our
Mother’s and Father’s Day covers once
we were in print again.

What better time than now
to give a little present to all the great
moms and dads that were our cover
gals and guys? Please check out pages
6 and 7 to once again salute these

great parents.
For a list of the names

and to check out the original covers,
visit our digital issues: May - https://
anyflip.com/kuez/btjb/; June -
https://anyflip.com/kuez/ccyu/.

Speaking of covers, the
cheerful watercolor gracing the
cover of our December issue is titled “Elf” and its creator
is local artist, Richard Stephens. Besides being a world-renowned watercolorist,
Stephens has been our cover design and layout person for almost every cover since
The Springs Magazine was first published.
We called on Stephens to
check his archives for something to
brighten the dark days of winter and
we believe he found just the right
fella. Special thanks to Stephens
for the delightful elf and for always
coming through with a great design
with whatever artwork we hand him.
If you’d like to see more of his work,
visit www.raswatercolors.com.
With all that said, The Springs Magazine team would like to wish each and
every one of our readers, advertisers, and contributors a very Happy & Prosperous
New Year!! Due to your loyalty and support, 2021 will be our 29th anniversary!
It’s going to be interesting to see what the New Year holds for all of us!

the community, including our pet friends, during this trying time,” she says. “The

library is the perfect location for donations as a lot of people come here as part of

their routine. Those library users who are fortunate enough and generous enough to

be able to give to others don’t have to go out of their way to do so.”

These donations will be delivered at frequent intervals throughout the

holiday season to various local charities based on their needs and requests.

Library Adult Services Programmer, Paul Kagebein, notes “Anything an

individual can do to help the less financially privileged could make a small but

another family’s winter just a little bit easier.”

Authors! Need Help

Publishing and Editing?

By Erin Wood
For the writer on your gift list this

holiday season, you might consider an editing
or publishing consultation. While publishing
consultations are a bit more difficult to come
by, there are many professional and responsible
editors in every genre who can help writers
transform and polish their manuscripts. The best
advice in finding the right editorial match is to ask
for references.

If your gift recipient is a nonfiction or
children’s book author, I personally offer services related to both. For example, is
someone on your gift list early in their nonfiction or children’s book project and
need help planning its focus and structure? Has the writer in your life mentioned
needing help editing and placing their nonfiction writing with literary magazines
and other outlets?

Have they completed a draft of their book and are searching for the
editorial support necessary to prepare it to submit to publishers or help it become
a self-publishing success? Perhaps they’re lost or overwhelmed in the publishing
process and need trusted guidance?

If any of these sound like the writer you know, you might consider a gift
certificate for a one- or two-hour consultation ($65 or $125 respectively).

As I work with writers, I draw on more than a decade in publishing
as owner and director of Et Alia Press, past editing and coaching for hundreds
of writers at all levels of experience, and my own experience as an award-
winning nonfiction writer. Find me at www.etaliapress.com and reach out to me at
[email protected].

A Hot Springs native, Erin Wood is a writer, editor, and publisher in
Little Rock. She owns and runs Et Alia Press (etaliapress.com). Wood is author of

Kissing Under the Mistletoe

By Lin Johnson

Kissing under sprigs of mistletoe is a

well-known holiday tradition, but its history as

a symbolic herb dates back thousands of years.

Many ancient cultures prized it for

healing properties. The Greeks used it as a cure

for everything from menstrual cramps to spleen

disorders, and the Roman naturalist Pliny the

The romantic overtones most likely

started with the Celtic Druids of the 1st century A.D. Because mistletoe could

blossom even during the winter, they saw it as a symbol of vivacity, and they

administered it to humans and animals for restoring fertility.

Mistletoe’s associations with fertility and vitality continued through the The Arkansas design company, Be

The toys will be distributed from December 1-15 to various counties in
central Arkansas. The counties include Grant, Prairie, Saline, Lonoke, Pulaski,
Perry, Jefferson, Garland and Hot Springs.

Toys for Tots, a 73-year national charitable program run by the U.S. Marine
Corps Reserve, provides happiness and hope to less fortunate children during each
Christmas holiday season. The toys, books, and other gifts collected and distributed
by Marines and volunteers offer these children recognition, confidence and a
positive memory for a lifetime.

Toys for Tots believes it is such experiences that help disadvantaged
children become responsible citizens and caring members of their community. The
organization works with local food pantries and other sources to locate families
who might not otherwise receive gifts during the holiday season.

All three ReStores will be drop off locations for unwrapped toys and
gifts and are the only drop off locations in the county. The ReStores are located
on Malvern Avenue, Hot Springs Village and Airport Road. For more information,
contact Courtney Post at [email protected].
