Hot Springs in Direct
Path of Rare 2024 Eclipse

Hot Springs National Park
is one of only two national parks in
America that will be in the “path
of totality” for the April 2024 total
eclipse of the sun.

“That’s pretty cool,” said
Bill Solleder, marketing director
for Visit Hot Springs. “What better
place to view this once-in-a-lifetime
phenomenon than a city that has a
national park, mountains, hundreds of lodging, camping, RV and short-term rental
opportunities, 200 dining establishments, dozens of attractions, three lakes, and a
citizenry that knows how to treat visitors like celebrities?”

Hot Springs and Cuyahoga Valley are the only full-fledged national parks
in the path. Hot Springs is dead center in the path of totality, which is the narrow
strip of the country in which the sun will be totally dark.

Visit Hot Springs has been planning for the April 8, 2024 eclipse since
2020, when the event’s path across America was made public.

“In 2017, the last solar eclipse visible from North America, Casper,
Wyoming, saw a million people flood into their little town because Casper was in the
path of totality,” Solleder said. “They were completely unprepared to accommodate
an influx of that size.

Solleder said Visit Hot Springs, with creative work by Marisa Rodgers, the
agency’s digital media manager, has created a “micro-website” that has a countdown
clock and links that can be used to connect with Visit Hot Springs to locate lodging
and other information to begin planning for a trip to the city for the eclipse. The
micro-website is at http://www.totaleclipsearkansas.com/.

For more information, call Bill Solleder at 501-321-2027.

Brook Olsen, Youth Services Programming Coordinator,
poses next to the intro sign for the upcoming StoryWalkTM.

GC Library Will Present

StoryWalkTM on the

Hot Springs Greenway Trail

By Erin Baber
The Garland County Library (GCL) and Hot Springs Parks & Trails present

their first StoryWalk™ starting October 1, on the Hot Springs Creek Greenway Trail
beginning at the intersection of Seneca and Adams Streets.

What is a StoryWalk™? A StoryWalk™ is a fun way to combine reading and
the outdoors! From the Kellogg-Hubbard Library, co-creators of this project, “The
StoryWalk™ Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed
in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition and the Kellogg
Hubbard Library.”

Ferguson was inspired to encourage parents or guardians to become
more involved in their child’s reading progress, while also encouraging physical
activity by getting people out to popular parks and walking paths. The books were
strategically chosen for children under seven years old so someone would have to
accompany them as they read/walked from page to page.

With the help of Rachel Senechal, formerly of the Kellogg-Hubbard
Library, and many others, this innovative reading program was brought to reality.
Now, over 12 foreign countries and all 50 states have participated since 2007, when
the StoryWalk™ project was first created.

The GCL is proud to present this StoryWalk™ in hopes to continue with
the project’s mission to promote early literacy, physical activity, and quality time
in nature with family. Please enjoy Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert and along the way
collect leaves, twigs, acorns, and anything that catches your eye to create your own
leaf man. Then, share your experience and creation with us on the Garland County
Community Facebook page.

Storywalk® is a registered service mark owned by Ms. Ferguson. For
more information about StoryWalk™ visit www.kellogghubbard.org/storywalk.

Learn more about the Garland County Library and all its services and
offerings at www.gclibrary.com, 501-623-4161, or in person at 1427 Malvern
Avenue in Hot Springs.

The very successful June Pride Month Walk drew nearly 300 people.

Halloween Spooktacular
Raises Funds for ARC

The Hot Springs Pride Alliance (HSPA) will be hosting its second annual
“Halloween Spooktacular” Sat., Oct. 29, 8:00 P.M. -12:00 A.M., at Whittington
Place, 301 Whittington Avenue.

This fundraiser will benefit the Tuggle and Shelby Clinic AIDS Resource
Center (ARC), Garland County’s only nonprofit medical clinic for HIV and AIDS
treatment.

This year’s theme is “Spooktacular Sideshow,” a party that will be a
carnivalesque, fun, and spooky night featuring live performances, a costume
contest, dancing, fun food treats, and specialty cocktails. Tickets are available at
www.hotspringspride.org. Purchase early as capacity is limited. Ages 21+.

The announcement of the “Spooktacular Sideshow” comes after a very
successful and community-engaged June Pride Month. The HSPA hosted a First
Friday gallery installation at Emergent Arts, several pop-up events, a downtown
Pride Walk, and the HSPA annual Pride Picnic at Arc Isle.

The Alliance wishes to express its gratitude to those that participated in
and supported June Pride Month: The Hot Springs city manager and officials, the
HS Police Department, and the HS National Park Rangers for their commitment to
creating a safe parade route, and to Visit Hot Springs for the media exposure.

A special thank you to Emergent Arts for its continued partnership and
to the Alliances’ commercial allies: Superior Bathhouse Brewery, Central Theater,
SQZBX Pizza, Grateful Head Pizza, Will’s Cinnamon Shop, and Destiny’s Bake
Shop. A big thank you to all the LGBTQ+ community and its allies that helped
make Pride Month a success by showing up to express their pride and solidarity
while helping to expand LGBTQ+ visibility in Hot Springs.

Hot Springs Pride Alliance is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose
mission is to engage, educate, empower, and enrich the LGBTQ+ community
in Garland County and the surrounding area. For more information visit www.

Arkansas High Country Bike Race Covers 1,000 Miles

of Arkansas Terrain

Hot Springs is the host community for this year’s Arkansas High Country Race

(AHCR) race and again for the 2023 race. The race begins October 8 in downtown Hot

Springs. The 2022 edition of the challenging race takes bicycle competitors on a loop that

encompasses much of the toughest mountain terrain in Arkansas.

The Arkansas High Country Route was developed by Arkansas’s own Chuck

Campbell in partnership with Adventure Cycling. The full AHCR route covers over 1,000

miles of Arkansas terrain and is made up of pavement and gravel roads with singletrack

options which include two IMBA Epic Trails, the Womble and LOViT (Lake Ouachita Vista

Trail).

It takes riders through the beautiful scenery of the Ouachita Mountains, Ozark

Plateaus, and the Arkansas River Valley. The full route can be broken down into three separate,

shorter loops: the southern, central, and northern AHCR loops.

“We are excited to be the host city for the fourth year of the Arkansas High Country

Race,” said Traci Berry, trails coordinator for Visit Hot Springs. “Hosting the race gives us an

opportunity to showcase our unique, historic town as well as the three IMBA Epics located

in our region: the Womble, LOViT, and Ouachita National Recreational Trail by offering a

third option for the event, the Triple Crown - connecting all three of the IMBA Epic Trails, to

cyclists from all over the country.”

Race director Andrew Onermaa said, “My excitement level is through the roof with

the incorporation of the South Loop and the Ouachita Triple Crown for this year's edition of

the Arkansas High Country Race.

“The buzz around the Arkansas High Country being one of the premier bikepacking

events in the country won't let down with an epic (literally International Mountain Biking

Association trails denoted EPIC) mountain bike loop around Lake Ouachita in addition to the

‘High Country's Greatest Hits’ in the southern region of the route via the South Loop. Three

races, one event. It's gonna be a party in Hot Springs.”

Johnny Brazil, owner of Jackalope Cycling and AHCR Race in Russellville, said, “I

am stoked to see what the Arkansas High Country Race looks like with Hot Springs style and Darren Gilmore is sprayed with champagne at the finish of the 2021 race in

community for another year of highlighting the beauty of Arkansas cycling opportunities and
letting the world see how amazing and tough our terrain can be.”

With Hot Springs being chosen as the host city, the riders who have done the race multiple years from other starting points will have to reevaluate their strategy. “As

many as 150 riders will come to Hot Springs to push themselves and their bodies to the absolute limits in a race where just finishing is winning,” Berry said.

Riders may register online at BikeReg.com. For more information call Traci Berry at 501-321-2027, or visit www.arkansashighcountry.com.

OUR G ALA FILMS

OPENING NIGHT: PATRICK & THE WHALE
DIR: Mark Fletcher | USA | US PREMIERE
FRI | OCT 7 | 7:00PM

Dive underwater to witness the extraordinary connection between one person and the natural world.
Renowned wildlife photographer and television host Patrick Dykstra has traveled the world pursuing his
passion for marine life and the Earth’s oceans. While filming a population of sperm whales near Dominica,
Dykstra has a life-altering experience when he meets and begins interacting with Dolores, a female
whale. What begins as play transforms into attempts at communication and, ultimately, the formation of a
meaningful bond. PATRICK AND THE WHALE is a gorgeously photographed documentary that examines the
interconnected nature of life on Earth. Director Mark Fletcher’s film is a conservation tale rooted in a sense
of awe and wonder as Dykstra eagerly searches for a greater understanding of the natural world. James
Reed, the Academy Award-winning filmmaker of MY OCTOPUS TEACHER, is an Executive Producer.

CLOSING NIGHT: THE RETURN OF TANYA TUCKER: FEATURING BRANDI CARLILE
DIR: Kathlyn Horan | USA
SAT | OCT 15 | 7:00PM

Enter the studio with country music legend Tanya Tucker as she records her first album of new material in
nearly two decades. Under the guidance of producers Brandi Carlile and Shooter Jennings, Tucker creates
a moving and vulnerable work that showcases her voice, both as a quintessential singer in the country
canon and as an authentic and vulnerable songwriter. With her smash hit “Delta Dawn,” 13-year-old Tanya
Tucker burst into the country music scene with her powerful voice and charisma. Grammy-winning singer-
songwriter Brandi Carlile often cites Tanya Tucker as an influential figure in her career, let alone as one of
the great voices of her generation, alongside the likes of Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn. Carlile is eager to
work with Tucker and a new album begins to take shape as the two artists spend time together and share
stories. Director Kathlyn Horan’s film captures an honest and thrilling look behind the scenes at the highs
and lows of the creative process.

INTERNATIONAL CENTERPIECE: ALL THAT BREATHES
DIR: Shaunak Sen | INDIA
THUR | OCT 14 | 7:30PM

An acrid fog perpetually blankets the city of New Delhi. Overcast skies shadow residents, and a dark,
smokey haze engulfs every living creature. New Delhi is the capital city with the worst air pollution in
the world, compromising the health and safety of its citizens and ecosystem. In the city, swarms of black
kites are common in the sky. While most residents rarely consider the birds’ plight, Muslim brothers
Mohammed Saud and Nadeem Shahzad have an inexplicable kinship with the raptors. The co-founders of
Wildlife Rescue, a bird hospital in urgent need of resources, work tirelessly to treat them. This captivating,
award-winning film World Premiered at the 2022 Sundance to critical acclaim, winning the World Cinema
Documentary Grand Jury Prize and designating the film as an awards season frontrunner. In a rare
occurrence, it was subsequently invited to screen at the prestigious 2022 Cannes Film Festival, where it
won the top documentary prize. Shaunak Sen’s ALL THAT BREATHES captures two men’s extraordinary
devotion to a disregarded creature.

US CENTERPIECE: THE EXILES
DIR: Ben Klein & Violet Columbus USA
FRI | OCT 14 | 5:00 PM

Christine Choy is a brashly opinionated and fearlessly punk documentary filmmaker whose straight-
shooting, direct manner clashes perfectly with her provocative sense of humor. Her role as a film professor
at NYU has influenced generations of filmmakers. In 1989, Choy and her filmmaking partner Renee Tajima-
Peña headed to China in the aftermath of the June 4th Tiananmen Square Massacre to document the
leaders of the pro-democracy protests who were able to escape to political exile. Although that film project
was never completed, today Choy travels the world to share this footage with the dissidents who have
never been able to return to their home country. The film cuts back and forth between Choy’s original
footage of the Chinese exiles and their present-day ruminations. Harnessing Choy’s star-power, directed
with potent energy and precision by first-time filmmakers Violet Columbus and Ben Klein, and the winner
of the U.S. Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, THE EXILES speaks to
the universal power of the medium of documentary filmmaking.

Room for a free yoga class taught by Karen Reeves of The Yoga
Place. Karen began practicing yoga soon after her doctor gave the
diagnosis of extreme osteoarthritis in both knees in 2004 and said
“no more impact exercise.” She knew the physical and emotional
benefits of being physically active and felt lost when she could no
longer do the things that made her feel better. Soon after, she took
her first yoga class and developed a passion for it. Through regular
practice, she realized she was becoming healthier, stronger, and
more flexible. But unlike other exercise routines, this practice made
her feel calmer, less anxious, more focused, and more spiritually
connected to God and other people. Along with her teaching
partner mat mate, Sharon Stickney, Karen opened the doors to

our mission of encouraging life-long science education through interactive exhibits

how charitable and community-oriented Hot Springs is,” said LaFollette.

Beanies, Ball Caps,

and Being Bald

By Erin Wood
Little Rock author and past Little Rock School District Teacher of the

Year, Tracy Peterson’s second children’s book, Beanies, Ball Caps, and Being
Bald: Different Isn’t Bad, Different Is Just Different was released at the end of
Alopecia Awareness Month on September 27.

Peterson says, “It has been such a meaningful experience to share my
brave former first-grade student Matthew Shelby’s experience of being diagnosed
with alopecia and what surrounded it personally and socially. Matthew inspires
me with his perseverance. I hope Beanies helps kids be more supportive of each
other when classmates and other kids have physical differences.”

Based on Shelby’s real-life story as it unfolded in Peterson’s classroom,
Beanies also captures bullying experiences outside the classroom (“Somebody
even said to their friend, ‘I dare you to go touch him.’”) While he worries
whether everyone will be able to understand, he finds that when he tells his
classmates more about alopecia, they ask questions and ultimately agree with
him that “different isn’t bad. Different is just different.”

Peterson’s first children’s book, Cartwheels: Finding Your Special Kind
of Smart, based on her former first-grade student’s dyslexia journey, focuses on
learning differences.

Beanies and Cartwheels are available in hardback and paperback at
www.etaliapress.com as well as at local and national retailers.

Hot Springs native, Erin Wood is a writer, editor, and publisher in Little
Rock. She owns and runs Et Alia Press (www.etaliapress.com). Wood is author
of “Women Make Arkansas: Conversations With 50 Creatives” (April 2019) and
editor of and a contributor to “Scars: An Anthology” (2015).

The Major Arcana Tarot card associated with Libra is Justice/Adjustment.

Tarot and Astrology: Libra

By Michelle Crandell
People born between September 23 and October 22 are Libras, AIR signs,

The Scales. The corresponding Major Arcana card is Justice/Adjustment.
September 23 to October 2: TWO OF AIR (SWORDS). You believe

you can fix things, make things as good as new... even better. You apply this
philosophy to objects, organizations, relationships, and people. Your lesson: learn
to compromise with reality. Don’t let Perfect become the enemy of the Good. A
truce may not feel satisfying but it is a win-win. Your challenge: making peace
with time constraints, input from others, “not your job” and most of all, your own
perfectionism.

October 3 to 12: THREE OF AIR (SWORDS). Your lesson: how to be
a successful member of society. As a natural anthropologist/sociologist, you are
fascinated by political causes, clubs, charity organizations, etc. You value social
ties and enjoy influencing social groups. Your challenge: managing your moral
outrage and negative rumination when you see injustice and unfairness in the world;
tempering your outspokenness with active listening.

October 13 to 22: FOUR OF AIR (SWORDS). You find security in habit,
yet you have an active mind. You tend to remain in situations that are stagnant,
knowing you need to move on. The result is negative thinking and/or complaining.
Your lesson: do what you know you need to do. Your challenge: finding a way to
rest your weary mind, living your dreams.
