THE OCTO GRIOT Every town wishes they had an Elmer
Beard, but he is one of a kind and
he is the heart and soul of Hot Springs. Beard is a published author, poet, retired
educator, community activist, and self-described octo-griot. His fierce dedication
to his community has led to a lifetime of service and leadership. As an educator for
over 40 years, Beard has taught from primary through college levels. He authored
two self-published books, “The Challengers: Untold Stories of African Americans
Who Changed the System in One Small Southern Municipality,” and “Let Reason
Roll: Race, Religion & Reflections,” a book of poetry. Beard has been a 30-year
staple at Wednesday Night Poetry and as an octo-griot, has used his beautiful voice
to share his history with our community over the span of eight decades. Sunday, May
2, at 2 PM, Beard will hold a Poetry Showcase during Art Springs.
BAGAR PRODUCTIONS
Audience favorites, Fred and Gloria Gardner with Bagar Productions Children's Mask Theatre, will return to
Art Springs for the third time. Producing quality children’s programming since 1982, the couple has written
and produced approximately 75 multicultural plays and stories that are performed in schools, libraries, festivals
and various child venues. Plays are adapted from fairy tales, folktales, Aesop fables and original ideas. Special sets,
indigenous costumes, cultural artifacts and masks are incorporated to bring characters to life and transport audience
members to worldwide ports-of-call. Each story has a moral and a message encouraging the appreciation of all cultures
while promoting the values of kindness, love, goodness, obedience, and patience and exposing the detrimental effects of
prejudice, bullying, greed, waste and unfairness.

What a perfect way to start ten days of festivities! The first event of this year’s Arts & The Park will be the opening reception of the Art Moves: Griots outdoor
art exhibition with a performance by the Lakeside High School Jazz Band. Visitors can then walk the Hot Springs Creek Greenway Trail between Hollywood Ave
and Belding Street to experience the exhibit. Art Moves features 11 images inspired by the life or work of Henry Glover or George Hunt, reproduced onto 30

the artist descriptions, a separate QR code will link visitors to a brief biographical video of the men.
A griot is a West African word that describes musicians or performers that use their art to
