About the Cover...

Our 30th Anniversary!

The Springs Magazine’s 30th
Anniversary cover is a tribute
to the many artists, festivals,
celebrations, beautiful people, and
to the remarkable history of the Hot
Springs community. The creativity,
diversity, and talent harbored in
our town have given us plenty to
report on over the years.

There are so many people to
thank for making this possible.

To Sonja Lash and Diana
Hampo, whose vision was the
beginning of this wild ride.

Of course, our advertisers,
without whom 30 years of
FREE issues could never have
happened.

To Sonja, for the many years she managed to keep the magazine
vital and relevant to our readers.

To our readers, who have picked up The Springs at grocery stores,
restaurants, doctor’s offices, and at hundreds of businesses over the years.

To the hard-working folks who have delivered tens of thousands of our
magazines, regardless of rain, snow, sleet, or hail.

To the fantastic salespeople who have built long-term relationships with
our ad clients.

A very special tip of the hat must go to our patient and talented cover
designer – Richard Stephens. While we’ve had imaginative covers designed
by others over the years, Richard was with us at the very beginning and since
1993, has created over 300 of our covers, taking our concepts and bringing
them to life, giving us a superb history of Hot Springs and its diverse events.

Thank you to everyone who has had a hand in keeping us on the
racks…and especially to all of you who have provided the content that fills our
pages. You people are AMAZING! And we’re looking forward to finding out
what the future holds!

Arkansas Shorts
Expands to Two Days

in 2022

Low Key Arts' 15th annual Arkansas Shorts Short Film Festival will take
place Saturday and Sunday, January 8-9, 2022, returning once again to the historic
Malco Theatre. The festival will expand - for the first time in its history - from one
night to two full days of short films, workshops, and parties!

While the program consists primarily of work from Arkansas filmmakers,
the festival will also feature films from across the country and around the world.

Low Key Arts’ 2021 was the busiest year to date for its popular hands-on
filmmaking program, producing 3½ hours of films over the past nine months.

“In partnership with the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival’s
Documentary Boot Camp as well as our own Sketch Comedy workshop this summer,
this year’s sessions resulted in some of the most powerful and moving work yet
produced in the program, and are the foundation for what will be an unforgettable
weekend,” says Low Key Arts Executive Director, Sonny Kay.

All films produced in Low Key Arts' Inception to Projection Filmmaking
Program will have their world premieres January 8-9.

“Arkansas Shorts has been bursting at the seams the past few years as
we have seen such growth and enthusiasm from our regional filmmakers,” says
Film Program Director, Jen Gerber. “It seems the time spent in quarantine the past
two years has resulted in a tremendous outpouring of creative energy, therefore
we decided this was the year to expand from a one-night event into a weekend of
screenings.”

During this eventful weekend, Arkansas Shorts will feature aspects of
the Inception to Projection program with robust filmmaking workshops to help
encourage, inspire and challenge filmmakers of every level.

Complete schedule, info, and tickets are available at www.lowkeyarts.org.

The tournament will be named the

Majestic Park hosts first Mike Dugan, the late Hot Springs baseball
tournament in February. historian who spearheaded the creation of
Majestic Park, according to Visit Hot Springs

CEO Steve Arrison.

“Teams from Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi and Oklahoma will compete

in the first of what will become a long list of tournaments to be held on this amazing

baseball facility,” Majestic Park General Manager Derek Phillips said. “We’ll have

2021 conference champions and conference runners-up competing in a first-class

tournament setting. South Arkansas University and Henderson State University,

both will be on hand. Henderson State’s participation is especially significant

because Mike Dugan was the former sports information director at HSU.”

2020 Mardi Gras Costume Ball & Contest Winners

Jazz Society Presents
9th Annual Mardi Gras

The Hot Springs Jazz Society presents the 9th annual Mardi Gras Costume
Ball and Contest on Saturday, February 26, 2022, in Hotel Hot Springs’ Grand
Ballroom with presenting sponsor Lara’s Jewelry and Design.

After being postponed due to Covid-19, the Mardi Gras Costume Ball and
Contest is back with Queen Beth and King Richard for a Royal Celebration. Great
costumes will abound and some will win prize money after an applause judging.

Delta Brass Express and the largest dance floor in Hot Springs is where
you’ll want to spend your evening. That is, when you aren’t checking out the luxury
silent auction or the elaborate Mardi Gras costumers competing to win first prize.

Back is One of Your Favorites – Restaurant Certificates packed in
envelopes for sale at $40 per envelope – guaranteed to be worth $50 or more. This
year we will be providing Mardi Gras food like Gumbo, Shrimp & Grits, Muffuletta
Sliders, Bread Pudding and more with, of course, adult libations for sale.

Joining Queen Beth and King Richard are Duchess Sonja and Duke Ike
Eisenhauer for a night of Fun and Support for the Hot Springs Jazz Society.

All this fun for $70 per ticket; Reserved Tables of 10 for $700. Get your
friends together for a table and preferred dance-floor (or whatever your preference
is) seating. For information and tickets: www.HSJazzSociety.org, or 501-627-2425.

Clay Model of
Babe Ruth Statue Revealed

Pennsylvania sculptor Chad Fisher showed a
one-sixth-size clay model of the eight-foot bronze statue
of baseball legend Babe Ruth that will be installed at the
city’s new Majestic Park baseball complex. The statue
depicts Ruth in his New York Yankee’s uniform swinging
the bat and watching the ball sail toward the outfield fence.

“We had a great gathering of Hot Springs residents
eager to see what the full-size statue will look like and to
honor Dr. Muldoon, the Hamby Family and Mr. Beasley,”
Visit Hot Springs CEO Steve Arrison said. “It was really
wonderful to get an up-close look at the model and to see
folks turn out to honor our three donors for stepping up to
the plate to make this artwork possible.”

Work is nearing completion on the Majestic Park complex. It is a five-field
complex located on the site of the former Hot Springs Boys and Girls Club and was
the site of one of the first spring training sites in Major League Baseball history.

For more information contact Steve Arrison at 501-321-2027.

Start a New Year with
Help from the Library

By Erin Baber

A quick Google search for common

New Year’s resolutions brings up many versions

of the following: exercise more, learn a new

skill or hobby, save more money, and live life

to the fullest. Whether you have grand plans to

live a healthier lifestyle or to get organized, the

Library has got you covered with everything

you need to make keeping your resolutions

easier than ever.

We’ll tackle a few of these common

resolutions to show you how the Library can

help. The most common - exercise, lose weight,

get in better shape. The Library has hundreds

of books and DVDs on nutrition, cooking,

exercise, fitness, and other helpful subjects. Use

the Library’s resources to download music and

Coordinator. Next resolution - learn a new skill.

Easy. Besides the thousands of books about a

vast variety of hobbies we have, we also provide free access to sites like CreativeBug

and Mango Languages. CreativeBug is a paid website for art and craft video lessons.

Your GC Library card grants you free access. Same with Mango Languages - you

can learn up to 70 different languages with a free-to-you account.

Now that we’re healthier and have taken up a few new hobbies, it’s time to

save money. Your library card is paid for with your annual property taxes. All you

need to do is come and apply for a card and start using the library to the fullest -

borrow books and movies, download ebooks, use free educational resources, ditch

Netflix and start using Hoopla, borrow fishing poles, check out a cake pan, stream

music online, and on and on. Opt in to our free delivery service and we’ll even save

you on gas.

The Garland County Library is located at 1427 Malvern Avenue in Hot

Springs. Learn about everything the library offers, including free delivery, ebooks,

special events, and more at www.gclibrary.com.

The “Real” World...

January brings a new beginning - every

year! What will it bring for you? Perhaps new

friendships, business opportunities, a new home ... who

knows?

The most important thing is that any property you

Kelly & Wayne own receives its regular and continued maintenance.
“Team Thomason” With that being said - January’s checklist includes:

store all holiday gifts and decorations properly; create
a home inventory for insurance purposes (even a video is better than nothing);

prepare for winter storms; organize closets; inspect plumbing; clean the places

you don’t normally clean; tighten hardware; check smoke detectors; clean the

garden; replace HVAC filters; clean the range hood; clean out dryer vent; deep

clean refrigerator (including coils); and replenish first aid kit.

Please call Wayne or Kelly Thomason, with Hot Springs 1st Choice, to help

you start, or continue, your property ownership journey.
