About the Cover ...

Happy 33rd Anniversary
Gallery Walk

The Springs Magazine called
on artist Gary Simmons for one of his
famed Gallery Walk cartoons for our
August cover to commemorate the
33rd Anniversary of Gallery Walk.
Simmons likes to portray us at our
finest and he certainly managed that
with his comical cartoon.

We hope you’ll take a trip to
Downtown Hot Springs for Gallery
Walk on Friday, August 5, from
5-9 PM. Stop in to congratulate
the galleries for preserving
this community event for 396
consecutive months. Rain, shine,
snow, hail, floods, and Covid-19
– nothing prevented the dedicated
gallery owners from opening on the first Friday of each month.
Check out our Gallery Pages for more info about the gallery happenings this month.

Special thanks to Gary Simmons for his delightful coverage of our town
and for sharing his artwork.

And Richard Stephens … Thank you for taking our images and turning out
great covers month after month!!!

Stay cool, safe, and healthy as we head back to school!
Happy August, Everyone!
Please share our online issues of The Springs at www.thespringsmagazine.com.

Step back in time at the historic Vapors Live. Owner Jimmy Miller
is bringing new life to this Hot Springs landmark.

New Events Coming
to Vapors Live

Jimmy Miller, owner of the DeSoto Rock Shop on Central Avenue in
Downtown Hot Springs, bought The Vapors in 2017 and has since been working on
renovating and restoring the historic property.

In 2021, Darrell Faircloth came on board in a marketing position which
became a managerial role after Tom Wilkins’ departure. Darrell, a frequent visitor
to Hot Springs all his life, made the move from Dallas in 2019 with the intention
of opening a BBQ restaurant but Covid put that on hold. In Dallas, he organized
concerts and festivals and was in the hospitality sector for nearly 20 years.

Of the recently renamed Vapors Live, “I saw some opportunities in the
entertainment scene and we’re filling them with a variety of shows,” Darrell said.
“Our goal is not to compete with existing businesses but to offer what’s missing …
something different.”

New events include stand-up comedy on the first Friday of every month,
line dancing classes, and a series of plays starting with Stephen King’s Misery in
August and Driving Miss Daisy in November. “If all goes well, we’ll have plays
every other month so we’re not competing with the Pocket Theatre,” said Darrell.

“There seemed to be a disconnect with the local music community which
is why we formed a house band and are now bringing in local and regional acts
– deFrance, Nicky Parrish, Kim Donnette Band, and Zach Davis for starters. Our
Open Mic night is morphing, and we’ll have some announcements about that very
soon.”

Beginning in mid-August, Vapors Live will host Ladies Night on
Thursdays with live music, wine specials, and an appetizer bar for the ladies. Rock
Star Karaoke most Friday nights will offer karaoke to live music with the public
singing on stage with the house band. That’s just the beginning. Stay tuned.

Vapors Live is located at 315 Park Avenue in Uptown Hot Springs. For
more information or to purchase tickets visit www.vaporslive.com, or follow them
@vaporslive.

Obedience training tends to make life happier for both the dog and the dog’s human

companion.

Anyone who has lived with an obedience-trained dog understands the

pleasures of life with an obedience-trained dog, versus a dog whose behavior makes

day-to-day life a troublesome struggle.

“With training, a dog can be taught to behave properly in many situations,

both in the home and in social situations in unfamiliar environments,” said Lola

Warren, owner and trainer at Lola’s Place. “When she learns what you require of

her, the dog will be a much happier pet because she won’t be consistently getting

into trouble. And, as a dog’s companion, you will be much happier because you

have a better-behaved canine friend.”

Lola’s Place offers group and private obedience lessons as well as boarding,

training, and behavior modification options. Warren is professionally trained to

help with any problems with your canine companion. She is a certified dog trainer

and an AKC Approved Canine Good Citizen Evaluator with more than 20 years of

experience. She previously worked for Soldier-On-Service-Dogs in Fayetteville,

Music Man Comes to the Stage at

Pocket Theatre

Picket Theatre presents The Music
Man, on August 5, 6, 12, and 13 at 7:00 PM.
August 7, 14 2:30 PM., at 170 Ravine Street.

By turns wicked, funny, warm,
romantic, and touching, The Music Man is
family entertainment at its best. Meredith
Willson's six-time, Tony Award-winning
musical comedy has been entertaining
audiences since 1957 and is a family-friendly
story to be shared with every generation.

The Music Man follows fast-talking
traveling salesman, Harold Hill, as he cons
the people of River City, Iowa, into buying
instruments and uniforms for a boys' band
that he vows to organize – this, despite the
fact that he doesn't know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with
the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian, the librarian, who transforms him into
a respectable citizen by curtain's fall.

Halloween Spooktacular
Set for October
The Hot Springs Pride

Alliance (HSPA) will be hosting

its second annual “Halloween

Spooktacular” Sat., Oct. 29, 8:00

P.M. -12:00 A.M., at Whittington

Place, 301 Whittington Avenue.

This fundraiser will benefit

the Tuggle and Shelby Clinic AIDS

The very successful June Pride Month Walk Resource Center (ARC), Garland
drew nearly 300 people. County’s only nonprofit medical
clinic for HIV and AIDS treatment.

This year’s theme is “Spooktacular Sideshow,” a party that will be a

carnivalesque, fun, and spooky night featuring live performances, a costume contest,

dancing, fun food treats, and specialty cocktails. Tickets are available in September

at www.hotspringspride.org. Purchase early as capacity is limited. Ages 21+.

The announcement of the “Spooktacular Sideshow” comes after a very

successful and community-engaged June Pride Month. The HSPA hosted a First

Friday gallery installation at Emergent Arts, several pop-up events, a downtown

Pride Walk, and the HSPA annual Pride Picnic at Arc Isle.

The Alliance wishes to express its gratitude to those that participated in

and supported June Pride Month: The Hot Springs city manager and officials, the

HS Police Department, and the HS National Park Rangers for their commitment to

creating a safe parade route, and to Visit Hot Springs for the media exposure.

A special thank you to Emergent Arts for its continued partnership and

to the Alliances’ commercial allies: Superior Bathhouse Brewery, Central Theater,

SQZBX Pizza, Grateful Head Pizza, Will’s Cinnamon Shop, and Destiny’s Bake

Shop. A big thank you to all the LGBTQ+ community and its allies that helped

make Pride Month a success by showing up to express their pride and solidarity

while helping to expand LGBTQ+ visibility in Hot Springs.

legacy by donating to help schools,

people, and non-profits since his father passed. Last November Denny asked his

salesmen to each pick non-profits from Malvern and he donated $100 to their non-

profit for each car they sold until the end of the year. He also did the same thing

again in February with different non-profits.

Now, Denny will donate $50 to the Hot Springs Jazz Society for each

car they sell during the last two weeks of August. What a great way to help Jazz

Society send students to Jazz Camp and also promote Jazz within the Hot Springs

community.

It takes me several breaths of inhaling and lifting tall, then exhaling and bending
to the side to get deeper. The pose stretches muscles in the back and around the ribs,
creating more flexibility in the spine and allowing you to breathe more deeply. The
hamstrings, hips, and shoulders, as well as the spinal side flexors, obliques, and intercostal
muscles between the ribs also get very stretchy.

On the sweltering day of the photo shoot, I got to experience the best way of all to
cool off: jumping in the lake. And besides my trusty photographer, Fred, I’m also grateful
to friends, Lynn and Frank Janaskie, for taking us out on Lake Hamilton in their boat.
Cooling off is always more fun with cool people!
