THE ALEC ROGOFF GARINIM
ASSIST-A-CAMPER MACHANEH
APPEAL
2018
Habonim Dror SA is a Public Benefit Organization (PBO),
registered under S18A. PBO number: 930 005 838 3 DAYS AT MACHANEH
HA’CHOLMIM
In honour of the late Alec Rogoff, a long-time chaver of
Habonim Dror, we named our subsidy appeal the “Alec Rogoff 19-21 DEC 2018
Assist-A-Camper Appeal” in 2007. We wish to thank the Rogoff
family and the Beare Foundation for their support of this fund, www.studentstate.co.za
which has contributed significantly in assisting those children [email protected]
who cannot attend Habonim events during the year due to 072 850 2454
financial constraints.
Over the last 88 years, Habonim Dror has prided itself on not
turning a child away due to financial constraints. Nevertheless,
the awarding of subsidies unfortunately puts a severe strain on
the movement's already limited financial resources. As the
number of distressed families in our community continues to
increase amidst the current economic climate, Habonim Dror
has not been able to accept every child that requires assistance.
We subsidised over 25% of campers at Machaneh17 in 2017 and it
seems clear that this year the number of subsidy requests will
increase once again. We estimate that we will need to raise in
excess of R600 000 in order for these children to participate in
this unforgettable experience. Over the years, the kindness and
generosity of members of the community has ensured that we
have raised the required amount needed to cover the financial
shortfall. No contribution is ever too small. If you are able to
contribute through a donation please contact Melissa Bennun on
011 786 7046 or [email protected]. Alternatively you can EFT
your donation into the following account:
Account name: Habonim- Alec Rogoff Assist
Bank: Investec 580105
Account number: 50006847241
Reference: Habonim –"your name"
(This account is held in trust with
Taback Pelkowitz & Berman)
Please send your proof of payment
to Melissa Bennun on [email protected].
Alternatively, should your child be attending
Machaneh, you may donate towards this fund
in the 'Financial Details’ section of the online
form next to ‘Assist-A-Camper Appeal’.
This sum will be added to your child’s total
Machaneh fee.
We thank you for your contribution.

Letter From
ROSH MACHANEH
Shalom Parents,
December 2018 is fast approaching and with it comes the opportunity for something different;
something unique, something special.
We understand that there are many alternatives for your children in December, but there really is
only one option if you want your child to have the opportunity to live a two minutes’ walk from
the beach, to experience independence while still being safe, to meet other young Jews from all
over the country, to engage with their Jewish identity, to learn about Israel, South Africa and the
world, to make life-long friendships and to really experience a magical holiday. Habonim
Machaneh offers something different. It is a place to be free, to fall in love, and to be unburdened
by the outside world whilst simultaneously working towards improving it.
As Rosh Machaneh, I want to assure you that my team and I will continue working to ensure that
Habonim Machaneh has been, for the past 11 years, my oasis. It’s been the place where I’ve been
able to experience life in a care-free way. Habonim has given me the confidence, the leadership
skills and the friendships to last a life-time. To explain what I’ve seen Habonim do for its
thousands of chaverim who have stepped foot onto the Onrus campsite over the last few decades
is almost impossible; however, there is a reason why everyone who has had the experience calls it
“home”. Although we only spend 3 weeks of each year on the campsite, it’s the place where we
feel most comfortable, happy, and safe being who we want to be. No other holiday can guarantee
you 3 weeks of fun in the safest possible environment.
I invite you to encourage your children to come experience the magic with us.
If you would ever like to get hold of me to discuss any issues or questions relating to Machaneh,
please email me on [email protected] or call me at our offices on 011 7867046.
It is an honour and a privilege to be leading this year’s Machaneh.

Habonim Dror is a worldwide
Jewish Zionist youth movement.
It exists to empower Jewish youth
to take responsibility for the
Jewish people, the State of Israel,
their home communities and the
world at large.
THE BUILDERS
Habonim (‘The Builders’) was founded in 1929 in Great Britain and by 1930, Norman Lourie
brought Habonim to South Africa, with the first camp taking place at Parys in 1931. The
movement began as a scouting organisation for Jewish youth and it later evolved into a Zionist
movement with a strong political platform. Dror (‘Freedom’) was founded in Poland in 1915.
Members of Dror participated in the Warsaw Ghetto uprising and organised underground
resistance factions in the ghetto. As both movements focused their energies on establishing
Jewish communities in the State of Israel, they merged in the 1980’s. The joint movement was
responsible for founding and developing a number of kibbutzim and advancing the rights of
Jewish youth in Israel.
Today, Habonim Dror operates in South Africa, as well as in many diaspora countries. We have
educated over 70 000 Jewish youth on Judaism, Zionism, Equality & Service to Humanity for 88
years and today remain the largest Jewish youth movement in the Southern Hemisphere,
owning the largest tented campsite in Southern Hemisphere as well.
Throughout the year, Habonim Bogrim (graduates) meet weekly to engage in relevant current
events. Habonim channichim meet monthly for fun activities with their madrichim. This
strengthens the bond amongst the shichavot and maintains Habonim as a crucial influence on
its members lives through-out the year. We run two Mini Machanot (weekend seminars) during
the year in both Johannesburg and Cape Town and we host Winter Day Camps for the July
holidays. This year, Habonim sent over 120 chaverim to Israel on several different programs and
we can’t wait to do it again next year!
On machaneh we aim to educate our channichim about our core beliefs and values.
Should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in contact with us.

FAQs
Does my child have to attend camp for the full three weeks?
Machaneh is a planned three-week experience. Over the course of the three weeks, channichim
engage in an educational process that will lead them through a curriculum that they build on
from one year to the next. Only over the full period can channichim truly engage in the unique
experience that is Habonim Machaneh. Arriving late or leaving early severely impacts on a
child’s ability to get the most benefit out of the camp experience. Special transport to/from the
Cape Town International Airport or to/from the Habonim campsite will be at a cost of R300 per
trip. Lifts to and from Cape Town will ONLY take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in the
morning.
Who will be protecting my child?
Madrichim will be the primary care-givers for your children. These young adults have
undergone extensive training in order to equip them with the skills necessary to care for your
children. When it comes to security matters, Habonim is proud to have the CSO protecting us
at Machaneh. We have had a long working relationship with CSO and look forward to another
safe and secure Machaneh.
Are cellphones allowed at Machaneh?
Yes, we do allow cell phones at machaneh, however, this is
discouraged for younger shichavot as it tends to inhibit proper
communication between channichim and their madrichim, as well
as their peers. Habonim is an environment separate from chaos so
cellphones, if brought, will only be permitted during free time and
strictly prohibited during peulot and meals.

SHABBAT &
TESTIMONIALS
We, at Habonim, believe in our channichim’s freedom to find an expression of Judaism
which is meaningful to them. We aim to promote an environment in which every channich
feels comfortable and proud on Shabbat.
At Machaneh, Friday afternoons are dedicated to Shabbat preparation, this includes
beautifying the Cheder Ochel for the Shabbat meal, dressing up and sending letters to
members of your Shichvah. Before sunset, everybody on camp comes together on Kikar
Rabin for a unified ceremony, reflecting on the past week. After that, anybody who wishes
is invited to take part in candle lighting before proceeding to services.
We host a range of Shabbat services, catering to all of our different channichim, including
a traditional Orthodox service, a Cultural-Humanitarian service, an Egalitarian traditional
service and Meditation on the beach. These services are followed by a special 3 course
Shabbat meal.
This year, Habonim is introducing our Machaneh-wide Kiddush Brocha. This means that on
Saturday mornings, we will be hosting the entire campsite on Kikar Rabin for an array of
delicious Shabbat treats! This is a beautiful opportunity to differentiate Shabbat from any
other day on Machaneh and to encourage channichim to bond with friends and family from
other shichavot, This is followed by optional services.
Our educational sessions on Saturday are all Shabbat friendly and aim to engage with
various topics in Judaism. It is commonplace that we invite special guests, Rabbonim and
politicians alike, to speak to our channichim on Shabbat.
When the day comes to an end, we all meet once again on Kikar Rabin to conclude Shabbat
with our famous Habo Havdallah. By candlelight, we sing out the Shabbat with blessings,
and afterwards, we sing and dance together under the stars.
