WHIST DRIVE The Cricket section of the above club wound up their season with a Whist Drive and Dance, which was held at the Public Hall on Thursday, September 18, when a most enjoyable time was spent. Thirty-six tables were occupied during the Whist, over which Mr H H West, the club chairman, officiated. The start was later than the advertised time owing to many late arrivals, mostly gentlemen. The prizes, all of which were given by club members, were won by the following: Ladies, 1st, Mrs R E Ray; 2nd, Mrs Addington; 3rd, Miss Rice. Mystery number, Mrs J Rumney. Gentlemen: 1st., Mr P Needle; and, Mr E M Smith, 3rd, Mr W J Holland, senr. Mystery number Mr.F W Sandford. A special prize for club members only who qualified by reason of having played in six matches during the season, consisting of a sweater in club colours, was won by Mr W J Holland, junr. Mrs B J Blackett kindly presented the prizes to the winners, after which Mr H West, in a short address, thanked the donors of the prizes, and all who had helped to make the evening a successful one. Messrs Nash’s Orchestra provided the music for the dancing which followed, and was carried on with much zest until the early hours of the morning. Mr W Groom ably acted as M.C. during the dancing. Refreshments provided during the evening were supplied by the committee. Welwyn Garden City News - 26 September 1924

CRICKET DINNER The Annual Dinner of the Cricket section of the Hatfield Athletic Club was held at the “One Bell” Hotel on Thursday, 12th Nov, when Mr A Whitby presided. Mr W R Watson occupied the Vice-Chair. The host, Mr W Clarke, provided an excellent repast, and the programme of toasts, songs, recitations, etc., was entered upon. Mr H West proposed the toast of “The President,” The Marquis of Salisbury, and this was received with musical honours. Mr B. H. Oliver proposed the toast of The Club," and after congratulating the Secretary, Mr. R. Ray, on the excellent list of fixtures he had arranged, spoke in cheerful strain of the young playing members now coming along. Mr A O Fuller, the Captain of the First Eleven, whose name was coupled with the toast, suitably replied. The Chairman then read the list of results, etc, and presented the prizes, given by the club and private members, to the winners. During the year the club had played 59 matches, as follows:– First Eleven: Played 25; won 10, lost 10, drew. 4, abandoned 1. Second Eleven: Played 21; won 8, lost 11, drew 2. Thursday Eleven: Played 13; won 7, lost 4, drew 2. Mr E J Hickson, with a batting average of 18.56 won Mr. Eastgate’s prize (a bat); while Mr Leslie Ward carried off the bat presented by Mr. Fuller for the best bowling average, viz., 13 wickets for 6.61 runs each. Mr A J Rumney was top of the batting averages in the Thursday team with 11.44 runs for 10 innings, and won the bat presented by Mr R Holland; and Mr Fuller was top of the bowling for the same team, his 42 wickets being obtained at an average of 5.88. Caps were also presented to Messrs Dudley Richardson and F Weedon for performance of the “hat trick,” and Mr Jeffrey Hilsden, carried off Mr Sunderland’s prize for “catches” during the season. Mr E J Hickson, on behalf of the other prize winners and himself, thanked the donors of the prizes, and later on in the evening, paid a tribute of appreciation to their “old war-horse,” Mr E Elliott, who had bowled so consistently in their matches, and who always took wickets when they were most wanted. Mr. Elliott suitably replied. The other toasts were “The Chairman,” proposed by Mr Watson; “The Artistes,” proposed by Mr C Sunderland; and “The Host,” proposed by Mr A Whitby. The following contributed to the musical programme: Messrs R Bowes, who also accompanied the songs, E Elliott, D Richardson, W R Watson, A Eastgate, F Weedon, R E Whitby, F Elliott and E V Dean. 134 The 1926 yearbook of the Hatfield United Athletic Club provides additional information about the 1925 season. Walter Holland finished just behind Leslie Ward in the bowling averages, taking 49 wickets for 332 runs, with an average of 6.77. Fred Weedon took a hat-trick against Hatfield Estate, and Dudley Richardson took one against Bethnal Green Tradesmen while also taking 6 wickets for 31 runs. It was the club's custom before World War Two to present white caps to players who took hat-tricks. Furthermore, it was noted that Ernest Elliott had the best performance with bat and ball across the two seasons of 1924/5. He scored 639 runs with an average of 15.21 and took 139 wickets for 1,116 runs with an average of 8.03 per wicket.

135 1926 This summer marked a significant development in the Hatfield Cricket history as the Saturday and Thursday XIs welcomed a Sunday XI. However, it would take a few years before the new team got a dedicated captain. Notably, this was the last full cricket season at the Show Field. More details about this will follow later. SATURDAY, 15 MAY The first mention of Hatfield Cricket this year was published in the Herts Advertiser. The report covered the visit of St Albans II to the Show Field, stating that the visitors "could do little against the bowling of E Hickson and A O Fuller backed up by good fielding." St Albans II managed to score only 59 runs, which Hatfield passed, making 62, with William Smith contributing 16. HATFIELD ESTATE V. HATFIELD 3RD XI At Hatfield Park, May 22nd. Hilsden and E Elliott came together then and put the matter beyond doubt, Hilsden scoring 23 and Elliott hitting out with the greatest freedom at everything that came along, carried his bat for 63, the whole innings realising 143. Hatfield batted first and lost six wickets for 16 runs, and later nine wickets for 27. M J Walby and J Rumney then made a last wicket stand and the side was not dismissed till 95 was on the board. Their opponents went in and after a deal of excitement were all out for 96, thus winning a good game by the narrow margin of one run. Welwyn Garden City News - 02 July 1926
