4CYBERSECURITY FOR MANUFACTURING SECTORIn just 3 months of 2025 there were 657 known ransomware attacks on manufacturing businesses worldwide, and according to the Dragos Industrial Ransomware Analysis (https://www.dragos.com/blog/dragos-industrialransomware-analysis-q2-2025). At a recent roundtable organized by EY in Penang, it was explained that this situation is becoming more prevalent and all companies are at-risk with one-infive organisations reporting a cybersecurity incident with 40% of those causing operational disruption.IT specialists see a rise in hacker campaigns specifically targeting industrial systems, exploiting phishing/social-engineering approaches, legacy flaws in the (often older) software systems used in manufacturing and attacking our vendors & contractors to gain access to our systems. In a manufacturing environment, one of the increasing risks we have is the expanding ‘Attack Surface' – meaning the number of internetexposed/cloud systems and the number of user accounts with permissions for sensitive company softwares (execution systems, financial systems, HR systems etc). The recent Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) attack is instructive: the cyberattack shut down car production for 5 weeks and took more than 6 months to fully recover with total costs in the $billions. As a result, shareholders and board members of all companies are taking more interest in business preparedness to resist such attacks – the cost of securing your operations is far less than recovery after a successful attack. As senior managers of FREPENCA companies we should be ensuring:• The company maintains a full list of installed software & cloud assets, including those connected through suppliers & customers.• A risk assessment conforming to IEC62443 (Securing Industrial Automation and Control Systems) is periodically conducted.• Network Architectures, Segmentation & Firewalls are configured to address the risks.• Rigorous implementation of vendor approved software patches & updates for all assets.• User Accounts and Permissions are regularly reviewed/revoked and old softwares retired to mimimise the 'Attack Surface'.

5POWERING PROGRESS: A DEEP DIVE INTO PENANG'S ENERGY INFRASTRUCTUREAs our initiatives and efforts become more & more towards sustainability, we have kicked off a new Convenor group for Infrastructure & Sustainability. The aim is to share common practices among the industry and have a big voice towards the energy providers. We are all in one boat to make the planet as nice as we have it for our next generations! The FREPENCA Sub-committee Lead for Infrastructure is pleased to share the highlights of their recent technical site visit. The team had the unique opportunity to go behind the scenes at the TNB PMU The Light, followed by an insightful boat tour to get a close-up view of the majestic transmission towers that bridge our energy needs.A Note of GratitudeThis visit would not have been possible without the incredible hospitality and expertise of TNB Penang. We would like to extend a special thank you to the TNB Penang General Manager En Wan, Account Manager Cik Maithily and the team for their comprehensive briefing and for facilitating such a high-access tour.We also want to thank the 15 FREPENCA member from various companies who joined us. Your active engagement and technical inquiries made this session a valuable knowledge-sharing platform for everyone involved.Technical Highlights: Strengthening the Island's GridThe visit provided a fascinating look into the operation of the Main Inlet Substation (PMU) The Light, which serves as a critical node in our regional power distribution. The centerpiece of the tour was the discussion surrounding the new 275kV overhead transmission line. This engineering marvel connects the Perai Power Station PMU directly to The Light PMU on the island. Key takeaways from our technical briefing include:• Massive Capacity: The new line boasts a transmission capacity of 2,000 megawatts (MW), significantly bolstering the energy ceiling for the state.• Enhanced Reliability: Functioning as a vital additional supply route to Penang Island, this infrastructure ensures greater grid stability and supports the growing industrial and residential demand.• Strategic Connectivity: By linking the mainland's Perai Power Station to the island's heart, the project secures Penang's energy future for years to come.Understanding these infrastructure milestones is essential as we plan for the continued growth of our member companies and the region. We look forward to more \"boots-on-the-ground\" sessions as we explore the backbone of our local economy.
