Peaking Under the Covers: Truven Health Helps Two 360
Care Insights Customers Discover they are not so Different After All
By Tina LeFebvre and Jill Pritts
The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals (NNUH) NHS Foundation Trust in the UK has a mission to
provide “the best possible acute hospital care for a tertiary catchment area of up to 822,500 people”. They
have a staff of more than 6,000 physicians and employees who treat over 700,000 people from local areas
per year. As part of their mission to achieve this goal, over the past three years, they have sent a leadership
team abroad for five study tours to study and learn from high quality institutions in the United States. As a
360 Care Insights customer, August Calhoun, SVP and GM Provider Solutions had an opportunity to meet
with NNUH. In his discussions with them, it came up they were looking for a United States hospital to visit
and asked August if he could help.
Roper St. Francis, a 150 year old private non-profit hospital in
Charleston, was an obvious choice. Also a 360 Care Insight
customer, Roper St. Francis has been both a 100 Top and Top 15
health system for several years. Tina LeFebvre, the Truven Senior
Client Services Manager for both accounts jumped in to facilitate
the visit, arranging several days of leadership meetings and 1:1
rounding with clinicians and leaders for knowledge sharing around
how Roper successfully operates its hospital system.
She explains, “Roper St. Francis really delivered on the ask and
pulled back the covers to anything and everything that NNUH
requested to see.”
Roper pulled out all the stops for the visit including a full day of
meetings with the C-suite and two days of meetings with rounding and clinician activities. Tina reports that
the meetings were very successful, ““I’ve never seen such collaboration with what Roper was willing to share…
they shared their corporate score card, their culture and their C-suite team. It was impressive to see these
great minds coming together to say ‘this is what we are experiencing
and the problems we are looking at from the perspective of health care
overall’ “. During the discussions, both sides were surprised to find that
they shared similar problems despite what initially seemed like two
very different health care cultures since the NNUH is part of socialized
medicine.
Both Roper Saint Francis and Norfolk and Norwich came away with
many different ideas to implement within their systems and as an
added bonus, Roper St. Francis already has an open invitation to travel
to the UK to continue the exchange of ideas and information.

Consumer-Directed Health Plans
A recent Truven Health Analytics study found that Consumer-Directed
Health Plans (CDHPs) save money and the cost reductions stem primarily
from lower utilization of healthcare services. However, members with
chronic conditions such as asthma, congestive heart failure, depression,
etc, were less likely to receive any medical care for these conditions.

Truven Life Program Update –
Survey Results Are In!
By Heather Love, Wellness Coordinator
A thank you to those of you who took our 2014 Truven Life Wellness Satisfaction survey earlier this spring.
We had a great response rate, with over 22% of employees across the globe providing their feedback,
suggestions and ideas for improving our wellness activities and initiatives.
Outlined below are our 10 biggest findings:
1) A vast majority of you (77%) plan to participate in wellness initiatives in 2015 (up from 64% who
participated in 2014).
2) You liked the variety of offerings but would like to see more in the smaller offices as well as options for
various fitness levels.
3) You feel supported by your managers to participate in initiatives but would like to see them participate and
be more of an advocate.
4) You feel our programs have helped you to be more physically active, but feel less strongly about our
programs helping you in the areas of nutrition and stress management.
5) You feel the company cares about your health. And you also feel our programs have created greater
connectivity and boosted morale.
6) Most of you agreed that you have healthy food options available at work, but would like to see even more.
7) Your most common suggestions for improvement were: more accessible challenges, less emphasis on
competition, optional individual participation, and more prizes/incentives.
8) Your most common requests for activities were: programs on stress, nutrition, work/life balance, sleep;
onsite fitness classes; organized groups; educational sessions on stress, mindfulness, nutrition, etc.; onsite
gym and/or membership subsidies; standing/walking desks; greater integration of technology (apps,
websites, etc.).
9) Your biggest barriers to participating in initiatives were: preference to manage health on own, lack of time,
work from home challenges, traveling too frequently, and you dislike competition.
10) Those of you who do not plan to participate in future initiatives mostly cited that “I manage my health on
my own”.
Your responses and feedback are very valuable to us as we continue designing, planning, and implementing
initiatives to promote your wellbeing and reduce health risks. The Truven Life team is taking into consideration
all you have suggested and encourage you to continue to share your feedback and ideas to help to make
these programs more meaningful to you.
In the coming weeks you can look forward to a new (and improved) round of Move for Life, new tobacco
cessation programs, and locally-led activities and events.

Congratulations to Business Intelligence Systems May Employee
of the Month – Dave Barclay
Dave Barclay is the Sr. Development Manager for the Consumer
Advantage Custom/Treatment Cost Calculator Team in Denver. Dave is
given this recognition for going above and beyond while covering for his
director (Sue Payne) during an absence. Dave picked up several critical
in-flight projects and made sure that they did not skip a beat through
an essential phase of funding investment requests for the Consumer
product line.
Working with a team of vice presidents from Product Management
and Engineering, he pushed through the financial estimates, staffing
plans and capital funding requests for the new investments. Dave
accomplished all of this while still meeting the requirements of his day
job as a Senior Development Manager.
Impressively, Dave succeeded on all fronts. He was pivotal in engaging the contract engineers and
having everything set for the new staff for a June 1 start. Additional funding for the consumer product
line was successfully obtained and the newly funded Consumer project is staffed and off to the races.
Great job, Dave!
Dave started at Truven Health in August 2012 as a Senior Development Manager responsible for
custom development on Treatment Cost Calculator. He is a Certified Scrum Master. Today, Dave splits
his time between managing Treatment Cost Calculator investment projects; custom projects and fixed
bid outsourced projects.
Dave had previously also worked at Global Crossings (Level 3), Covansys (CSC), Thomson Healthcare
and DaVita.
Dave received his BSBA in Information Systems and Finance from University of Colorado, Boulder. Dave
is an avid tennis player and enjoys spending time with his family and their French Bulldog Chunkers.

All in the Truven Health Family:
Josh Armstrong, Olympic Hopeful
By Mary Ann Smith
Jon Armstrong joined Simpler as a sensei in 2004. The
proud Scotsman has received numerous promotions
leading to his current position – Executive Vice President,
responsible for our global business development efforts in
the commercial sector. This impressive career, however, is
being rivaled by his son’s accomplishments.
Josh, 17, has found his passion in Olympic rowing. He
sculls which means he uses two oars and typically races
over 2000m. Josh had been racing karts in the British National Championship until age 14, but he grew so
tall (reference his parents for genetic explanation) that this option became limited. He quit karts and chose
rowing because his height would be an advantage (currently 6’8”, 200 lbs.).
In his first full year of competition Josh was undefeated, winning all national titles and his first cap for GB
rowing (the high-performance arm of British Rowing). Along the way, he won his match against France’s top
single. This year he made it to the semi-final of the Henley Royal Regatta along with friends from school in a
quad competition. Along the way they knocked out the Australian National Champions. A nice consolation
was they now hold the record for the fastest ever time down the 2100m course. According to Jon, ‘losing the
semi-final by under a second was character building’.
Incredibly, on August 8th, all of this hard work has paid off in a World Championship for Josh and his team!
Rowing in the World Junior Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the Great Britain Rowing Team junior
men’s quadruple scull produced a storming finish to win a historic gold medal. Gavin Horsburgh, Joshua
Armstrong, Sam Meijer and Chris Lawrie were fifth at the halfway point but surged past the other teams to
take a first-ever men’s quad title for Great Britain. Many athletes who achieve this level go on to represent
Great Britain at future Olympics! We are all rooting for you, Josh.
