Who was Galileo?
• Italian astronomer, mathematician, physicist,
philosopher and professor
• made pioneering observations of nature with long-lasting
implications for the study of physics
• father of observational astronomy, father of modern
physics, father of the scientific method, father of modern
science
Galileo’s Education
• Galileo told his father that he wanted to be a monk.
• This was not exactly what his father had in mind, so Galileo withdrew
from the monastery.
• In 1581, at the age of 17, he gave into his father’s wishes entered the
University of Pisa to study medicine, as his father wished.
• By 1585, he gave up his courses in medicine and left without
completing a degree to become a mathematics teacher.
Galileo’s Observations
• Galileo is one among the first scientists who questioned
the ancient ideas and disproved them.
• The discovery of isochronism.
• Two objects with different weights fall down at the same
speed.

Books
• Galileo published a number of books throughout his
career.
• The Operations of the Geometrical and Military
Compass (1604), which revealed Galileo’s skills
with experiments and practical technological
applications.
• The Starry Messenger (1610), a small booklet
revealing Galileo’s discoveries that the moon was
not flat and smooth but a sphere with mountains and
craters.
