As I look to our role of stewarding the region’s rich cultural resources and
sharing with ever expanding audiences, I am honored to be joining you in
initiating this exciting new chapter in the Museum’s 30 year history. Our
innovative approach to scholarship, education, exhibits and programming
in many ways reflects the power of philanthropy, volunteerism, and
commitment to a shared vision.
As one example, drawing from our strength conducting original field work,
exploration, and research, the Museum is proud to host the month-long
Archaeology Field School where we provide valuable field and skills training
for the next generation of nautical archaeologists in partnership with Texas
A&M University and Institute of Nautical Archaeology.
Few museums can offer a fleet of iconic replica vessels, research vessels, J Michael Smiles, Executive Director
support boats, wooden rowing gigs, canoes and kayaks that support
programs for broad and diverse audiences. Combined with hands-on education, scholarship, and exhibits we shape our
understanding of Lake Champlain’s past, present, and future. I am amazed by the ripple effect of our oars in the water, working
as a team.
Our Museum this year offers you an array of new programs, interpretive exhibits, and hands-on activities - opportunities to enjoy
learning as much about one’s self and one’s own skills as about our rich submerged cultural heritage, ecology, and history of Lake
Champlain. This year we proudly announce programs that enable visitors and participants to “go deeper” in their experiences

Burlington! In a festive setting at Perkins Pier on the Burlington waterfront,
the exhibit will serve as a porthole to history for visitors and area residents,

Burlington waterfront and the cargoes that shipped in and out of the
Champlain Valley will also include stories of former slaves for whom the
historic waterway served as a corridor to freedom. Donations accepted.

Where is Schooner Lois McClure?
Anyone out there own a wooden boat? If you do, you know from experience that wooden
boats are a lot of work. Schooner Lois McClure turns 11 this year, and it's time for some
repairs before she can be recertified for public boarding. So this fall she goes to dry dock
in Waterford, NY, thanks to support from our amazing friends at NYS Canal Corporation.
Until then, she will reside at the Burlington waterfront as a backdrop to our Lake Adventure
Camps, closed to the public until 2016.
Why Can’t I Step On Board?
Wooden vessels are sturdy, but they require constant maintenance. Every year, LCMM staff
and volunteers scrape and paint the hull and deck, caulk the seams, and do the annual chores
that keep the schooner “ship shape.” Lois McClure has worked hard, through all kinds of
weather, sharing waterways with massive and powerful vessels unknown to the original canal
schooners. The Ten Year Haul-Out is an important event for this working vessel. Professional
shipwrights have inspected her inside and out, noting any areas that need special attention
or restoration before she goes back into operation.
During the Canal Era (1820-1940), dozens of boat yards, like Ryan's Boatyard in Whitehall, NY (above)
built and repaired the thousands of canal boats that traveled along the region's waterways. Most of
these enterprises disappeared long ago. Lois McClure will travel for her 2015 restoration to New York
State Canal Corporation’s Drydock at Waterford, NY.

and the Vermont Abenaki Artists Association (VAAA). “Abenaki warriors
fought at Fort Necessity during the French and Indian War, so this is
an important way to connect our past and present,” explains exhibit
curator Vera Longtoe Sheehan, Director of the VAAA. Parley and
Protocol was inspired by the etiquette and procedures involved in treaty
making. “Those diplomatic procedures are still in use today,” explains
Elnu Sôgemô (Chief) Roger Longtoe Sheehan. “Upon gaining state
recognition, our chiefs presented the State of Vermont with a wampum
belt and wampum strands representing each tribe, together with pipes
and traditional ceremonial tobacco.” The exhibit presents pieces by
living Abenaki artists inspired by historic research and connections
to their ancestors. “These objects are replicas of ceremonial items,”
Sôgemô Longtoe adds, “They have never been brought to life and used
in ceremony.” “This exhibit is also important because it shows that
we know our history, we follow our customs, and we are still here.
Our Abenaki exhibit team created, selected, and are interpreting the
objects,” Vera Longtoe Sheehan concludes. The exhibit travels to Ft.

Underwater Archaeology Field School: Shelburne Shipyard Steamboat Project
This June, graduate and undergraduate students from Texas A&M
University are joining LCMM archaeologists and dive leaders for a month-
long underwater survey of three nineteenth-century steamboats in
Shelburne Bay, Shelburne, Vermont. Last year the project focused on
four abandoned hulls: A. Williams, Winooski, Burlington and Whitehall.
This year students return to study the latter three steamers, all from the
1830s with a special focus on the earliest of the three, Winooski, built
in 1832. We will be using photogrammetry to study and document the
wreck with a team led by graduate student Kotaro Yamafune.

nauticalarch.org/blogs/shelburne-steamboat produces 3D models from photographs. A series
of control markers are placed on the shipwreck
and the site is systematically photographed. These
images are entered into a computer program which
calculates the position and orientation of each
photo.
Once the photographs are aligned, it is possible to
generate a dense point cloud and mesh model of the
shipwreck. With these georeferenced 3D models,
archaeologists can also produce photographic
plans of sites, take accurate measurements directly
from the 3D model, and import photogrammetric
data into other computerized technologies for
mapping and visualizing archaeological features.
We can't wait to see the results, Kotaro and team!
