2 NEW INDUSTRIAL MASTERPLAN 2030 MITI organised an information day on 6th of July at the MITI tower in Kuala Lumpur to inform the Industry about the 2030 NIMP (New Industry MasterPlan until 2030) . YB Senator Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul addressed the following main messages in his speech to the audience: 25% of Malaysia’s (MY) GDP is contributed from the industry. Production Industry employs today around 15% of MY's population but MY is behind in terms of labor productivity compared to other Asian countries. FDI & DDI have slightly declined -> that’s why a NIMP (New Industrial MasterPlan) needs to happen. It’s a new mission based approach (vs. previously an sector based approach) and also a whole nation approach. From 1988-1996 Malaysia's GDP has doubled, at the moment MY's GDP grow is slow, 6% YoY is something what needs to be achieved again to double the GDP in the next 10-12 Years. ASEAN integration is key - from Silo thinking to collaboration. The NIMP contains 4 Missions, 20 Strategies and 56 action plans as well as multiple enablers and is yet to be signed off by the cabinet. IEEE INSPIRATION NIGHT Frepenca was invited to the IEEE annual dinner / inspiration night. Frepenca had discussions with Bernard Lim (Vice Chair of the Malaysian committee) as well as with Lance Chung (Regio 10 APAC director) about a deeper connection from IEEE with the industry. The issue they see is that the students during their time at the university have an IEEE membership (since it is a reasonable membership fee for students), but once released into the industry most of them do not convert their student license into a more expensive "normal" membership. We see at Frepenca that some electrical engineers even never connected with IEEE and some of them do not even know the institution. We agreed that a more intense connection to the industry would benefit both sides, I also committed that Frepenca is open to help, but we did not discuss any specific actions to strengthen the connections yet. 3 GREEN ENERGY UPDATE FREPENCA attended a meeting with the Energy Commission to highlight our mid-term concerns on a roadmap towards ‘Net Zero’. We explained that many customers are now expecting manufacturers to show a path to NetZero, which may take until 2050 or beyond. As you may know, Malaysia has signed-up to The Paris Agreement (https://unfccc.int/process-and-meetings/theparis-agreement) committing a 45% reduction in “carbon Intensity” by 2030 compared to 2005 levels, however its not clear what detailed steps will be undertaken to achieve this. The Energy Commission informed us that the government is expected to make major announcements of green energy generation and storage in late July. WATER SUPPLY SECURITY Water Supply Security We are still waiting for an update from NCER/NCIA on plans to improve contingency arrangements and expansion of supply, especially for members based in the Batu Kawan area given its continued rapid expansion of demand.
