is also home to a restaurant with panoramic views.

City of Freeport

The Brazos River has played a significant part of the
history of Freeport. In the 1800s steamships and
other boats carrying passengers and goods for trade
traveled the river extensively. The banks were lined by
plantations and used for transportation and business.
The rising and falling waters of the river caused
continuous flooding of the towns of Freeport and
Valasco. Eventually, dams and a lock changed the river.
Finally, it was rerouted and diverted to the west leaving
the Old Brazos River as what appears today as a salt
water lake. Shrimp boats and commercial boat traffic to
Brazosport use it extensively.

Dockage: Just west of Mile 392 WHL, Oyster Creek
leads north 2.5 miles to Kirby Marina. Depths of 6 feet
are charted both in Oyster Creek and dockside in the
marina; however shoaling is possible in the channel.
Kirby has gas and diesel fuel, along with transient slips
and repairs. This marina is located in a rural part of
Freeport, which means you will likely hear cattle rather
than traffic. Provisioning requires a car.

At Surfside Beach, the Bridge Harbor Yacht Club offers
a pleasant break and a convenient place to refuel for the
long run to Matagorda Bay and beyond. The entrance to
this well-protected marina is at Mile 393.5 WHL, just
prior to rounding the bend to the Surfside Beach (SR
232) Bridge (73-foot fixed vertical clearance). A three-
story condominium building marks the south side of the
entrance channel, with the fuel docks just beyond. When
entering the basin from the GIWW, the fuel dock is
across the first side-channel, which branches off to port.
Transient slips line the west side of this side-channel.

port leads to the Lydia Ann Channel.

The Lydia Ann Channel (to port) is used for boats
going to Port Aransas and for sailboats with mast heights
greater than 48 feet. This channel is covered in more
detail in the next section. The two routes rejoin at Mile
539.5 WHL before the GIWW enters Corpus Christi
Bay through a narrow cut aptly named the “Eye of the
Needle.” Because the two routes differ so obviously,
reasons for choosing one over the other will vary.

The Rockport Cut (to starboard), takes the more direct
route to Corpus Christi Bay. The entrance from Aransas
Bay into the GIWW channel (Rockport Cut) is marked
by green “7” with numerous daybeacons and floating
marks beyond that point. Stay mid-channel, as shallow

Dockage: On the chart, the Port Isabel Small Boat
Basin looks like a pair of hands with fingers spread apart.
Between the fingers are canals leading to a variety of
residential dwellings from trailers to fancy stucco multi-
story homes. The Port Isabel City Dock at the end of
Pompano Avenue has sturdy bulkheads and slips large
enough for the typical cruising vessel. Electricity and
restrooms are provided.

A walk down the main street (Highway 100) from the
Small Boat Basin will take you past a liquor store, a minor
emergency clinic, several restaurants, convenience stores,
banks and the post office. West from the Small Boat Basin
is a Walmart and an HEB grocery store. Some marine
