work ethic

I am sure that you have ofthe heard the words "work ethic" being bandied around. it has become one of the many
phrases that is often included in many want ads and job descriptions, as a trait that you must prossess before you can

be considered for an open position
(1)________ Is it a personal trait that must be possessed by individuals Or is it a standard of behaviiour that everyone

should follow so they can actually be of use to the organisation?
Let's start off with defining work ethic. (2)________ If we are going to use a simple definition for work ethic, we could go
with the one that describes it as a set of moral principles that an employee uses in the performance of his work and its

inherent ability to strengthen character."
Basically, work ethic refers to how you feel about your job or career. (3)________ It also pertains to how you do your job,
or the responsibilities that are attached with it. The level of respect you show your co-workers and people you come

into contact with at work, and how you communicate and interact with them, also defines your work ethic.
From this definition, we can also surmise that work ethic is also used to refer to key characteristics that one should
possess. The key characteristics include honesty, integrity, humility and accountability, among others. These traits or

characteristics will dictate how you will react or do in a certain situation, or when you are faced with a particular
circumstance. (4)_________ Obviously, work ethic is important in defining your identity. A huge part of how people will

form an opinion and know you will come from what they perceive to be your work ethic.

Why is it important to have a good and strong work ethic? Ultimately, it iwill show the strenght of your character and
present you as in a positive or negatiive light (5)_______ If you are looked at favourably by your co-workers and
superiors, then you willl have better chances at advancing your career.

From the organisation's point of view, it will be to it's benefit to have employees with solid work ethic. This is because
such traits and personalities will contribute to the attainment of the vision and goals of the organisation. (6)________ If
you want to become effective as a contributing member of the organisation, then you should have a good and strong

work ethic.

A In the workplace, this will be to your advantage.
B How you respond will reveal the kind of work ethic that you have
C work ethic, on its own, is n't going to be of any use to any organisational set up , though.
D No one actually knows what is meant by work ethic.
E Hence, it covers your attitude and behaviour.
F There are so many definitions attached to the phrase.
G It is difficult to please our employers all the time.
H but what is work ethic, really?

YONDER SEE THE MORNING

A.E. Housman

Yonder see the morning blink:
The sun is up, and up must I,

To wash and dress and eat and drink
And look at things and talk and think

And work, and God knows why.

Oh often have I washed and dressed
And what's to show for all my pain?
Let me lie abed and rest:

Ten thousand times I've done my best
And all's to do again.

Grammar in action

zero conditional We can make a zero conditional sentence with two
First conditional present simple verbs (one in the 'if clause' and one in
the 'main clause'):.

If + present simple, .... present simple.
This conditional is used when the result will always
happen.
Here are some example

If you touch a fire, you get burned.
People die if they don't eat.

The first conditional has the present simple after 'if',
then the future simple in the other clause:

if + present simple, ... will + infinitive
It's used to talk about things which might happen in
the future. Of course, we can't know what will happen
in the future, but this describes possible things, which
could easily come true.

Second conditional The second conditional uses the past simple after if,
Third conditional then 'would' and the infinitive:Communication was more
complex and tedious.

if + past simple, ...would + infinitive
.It has two uses.
First, we can use it to talk about things in the future
that are probably not going to be true.
Second, we can use it to talk about something in the
present which is impossible, because it's not true.

We make the third conditional by using the past
perfect after 'if' and then 'would have' and the past
participle in the second part of the sentence:

if + past perfect, ...would + have + past participle
It talks about the past. It's used to describe a
situation that didn't happen, and to imagine the result
of this situation.

She wouldn't have been tired if she had gone to
bed earlier
She would have become a teacher if she had gone
to university
