Objectives of “THE SCIENTISTS”
1. To prevent the spread of COVID-19 pandemic at Kolej
Matrikulasi Negeri Sembilan (KMNS).
2. To save cost of buying hand sanitiser by preparing DIY hand
sanitiser to be used within KMNS.
3. To begin crowd-funding for the continuous preparation of hand
sanitiser.
4. To maintain a self-sustaining hand sanitiser project.
5. To contribute towards the wellbeing of KMNS students.
Composition of Hand Sanitiser by KMNS
Ethanol (CH CH OH)
2
3
is effective in killing microorganisms like bacteria,
fungi and viruses; a common ingredient in many
hand sanitisers.
Hydrogen peroxide (H O )
2
2
is a mild antiseptic used on the skin to prevent
infection of minor cuts, scrapes and burns.
Glycerin@ Glycerol (HOCH CH (OH)CH OH)
2
2
2
is a colourless and odourless liquid that comes from
plant sources; provides protection against skin
irritants and as moisturiser.
Essential oil (EO)
Provides fragrance.

Production Cost of Hand Sanitiser by KMNS
To make 1.0 L hand sanitiser (20 × 50 mL bottle);
Material Cost
Ethanol 95% RM 20.80
Glycerine RM 0.35
H O 30% RM 0.10

Spray bottle (50 mL × 20 pcs) RM 12.00
Label sticker (20 pcs) RM 11.00
TOTAL COST RM 44.25
Cost to make 1 × 50 mL bottle = RM 44.25 / 20 bottle
= RM 2.20
Proposed selling price of 1 bottle is RM 5.00,
therefore each bottle gets revenue of RM 2.80!

DISCUSSION • The white spots on nutrient agar are bacterial colonies.
• Bacteria thrive in petri dish A and B compared to petri dish C, D and E on the first day.
• Rapid bacterial growth occurs on petri dish A on day 2 and 3.
• Bacterial growth was disrupted and slowed on petri dish B after being exposed to HS KMNS on the
second day.
• Bacterial growth persists on petri dishes C, D and E but at a very slow rate.
• The slowest bacterial growth is on petri dish E followed by petri dish C and D.
CONCLUSION The production of KMNS hand sanitiser has been proven through viral and bacterial testing.
Based on the alcohol test, the percentage of alcohol content in KMNS hand sanitiser exceeds 75%.
This is in line with the WHO-recommended formulation.
In conclusion, the use of KMNS hand sanitiser is safe and effective.
